Mark 7:6-9 and Mark 12:29-31

March 1, 2008

He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. And in vain they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ (Mark 7:6-7)
      Have mercy on us Jesus, for the Episcopal Church is sunk in hypocrisy — it teaches the politically correct doctrines of the moment as commandments from you.

For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men–the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.” (Mark 7:8)
      Father, we are really good at polishing the outside of the cup so that it appears bright and shiny, but the inside of the cup is filled with corruption and sin. Please bring the Episcopal Church to its knees in repentance.

He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. (Mark 7:9)
      Holy Spirit, the Episcopal Church has made the Second Commandment way more important than the First Commandment. Help us receive Jesus summary of the law and the prophets: “Jesus answered him, ‘The first of all the commandments is: “Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater than these.’” (Mark 12:29-31)

“Do you love Me?” (John 21:17).
      Lord, that is the piercing question for the Episcopal Church.

Praying the Nicene Creed daily: and of all things visible and invisible;
      Father, we know that we are surrounded by your angelic hosts and that whole company of heaven, that cloud of witnesses that has gone before us. Help us to be steady in you till we reach that place of rest. Thank you.
