The peace of Jerusalem

March 8, 2008

Increased bombing in and around Gaza.

Psalm 122:6-9 New Living Translation
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
May all who love this city prosper.
O Jerusalem, may there be peace within your walls
and prosperity in your palaces.
For the sake of my family and friends, I will say,
“Peace be with you.”
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
I will seek what is best for you, O Jerusalem.

God Most High,
Your servant Abraham followed Your call and left his homeland. He built altars to You and called upon Your name in Shechem, Bethel, and Hebron. He gave a tenth of everything to Melchizedek, the King of Salem and priest of God Most High. Abraham believed Your promises and You counted it to him as righteousness. He commanded his children and his household to keep Your ways by doing righteousness and justice.
When informed of the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham interceded. He who counted himself but dust and ashes pled for the salvation of the righteous.
When Abraham died, Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah.
As Jews, Muslims, and Christians, we count Abraham as father of our faith. May we all build altars and call upon the name of God Most High. May we all please You with our sacrifices and keep Your ways by doing righteousnesss and justice. Counting ourselves as but dust and ashes, may we all plead for the salvation of the righteous. Together, standing side by side, may we give honor to purity and humility of heart. Amen.

Mark 9:17-29

March 8, 2008

Then one of the crowd answered and said, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who has a mute spirit. And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I spoke to your disciples, that they should cast it out, but they could not.” He answered him and said, “O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to me.” Then they brought him to him. And when he saw him, immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming at the mouth. (Mark 9:17-20)
Jesus, the Episcopal Church is being convulsed right now. We have been a faithless generation and are unable to set things to right in our own power. Please help us in the Episcopal Church and deliver us from bondage.

A word received: Pray that my people will be delivered out of bondage.

So he asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. (Mark 9:21)
Father, the roots of our present distress go back several generations: we have been (and still are) unwilling to acknowledge the sin among us for what it is and bring discipline to the life of the church.

And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” (Mark 9:22)
Holy Spirit, often the evil one has tried to throw us into the fires of hell or drown us in worldly sin; come with your power into our common life.

May the Name of Jesus, the Son of God, who is mightier than all the hosts of Satan, and more glorious than all the angels of heaven, abide with us in our going out and our coming in; by day and by night; at morning and at evening; at all times and in all places.
May the Name of Jesus, the Son of God, protect and deliver us from the wrath of evil persons; from the assaults of evil spirits; from foes invisible; from the snares of the Evil One; and from all low passions that beguile the soul and body.
May the Name of Jesus protect and deliver us.
And the blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit be with us this day and always. Amen. (adapted blessing from the Anglican Christian community in Ceylon, Pakistan, and India:)

Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:23-24)
Lord Jesus, we believe in you; help our unbelief.

When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!” (Mark 9:25)
Jesus, please command the deaf and dumb spirit that infests the Episcopal Church to leave so that once more we may hear you clearly and clearly proclaim the gospel.

Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, “He is dead.” (Mark 9:26)
LORD, many looking on at the convulsion the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church of Canada are going through have pronounced us dead.

But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. (Mark 9:27)
Jesus, please take us by the hand and help us up.

And when he had come into the house, his disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” (Mark 9:28)
Jesus, please show us why we are do powerless.

So he said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.” (Mark 9:29)
Father, please bring us by your Holy Spirit to a life of prayer and fasting.

      Notes from the Front Line

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I arrived at Camp Allen, Texas, yesterday afternoon, in preparation for the Spring House of Bishops Meeting which begins today. I would ask you to please keep me and all the members of the House of Bishops in your prayers this coming week. In my prayers this morning, the Lord brought the following passage from 1 Peter 5 to mind:
”God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith.”
May the Holy Spirit manifest Himself in a mighty way during this gathering, touching and transforming the hearts, minds and souls of every bishop here, guiding and leading us in all that is said and done, that it will be in accordance with His will, and to His honor and glory and the benefit of His Church and people. Come Holy Spirit! Come now and come with power to cleanse and redeem your Church. We need you Lord Jesus. Amen.
       Faithfully Yours in Christ, +Bill
