Psalm 140

March 13, 2008

Deliver me, O LORD, from evil men; preserve me from violent men, (Psalm 140:1)
Deliver us, O LORD, from those who are doing violence to the truth of the gospel.

Who plan evil things in their hearts; they continually gather together for war. (Psalm 140:2)
Jesus, please defeat the plots of those who reject the gospel in the Episcopal Church.

They sharpen their tongues like a serpent; the poison of asps is under their lips. (Psalm 140:3)
Father, we hear words of reconciliation from the leaders and teachers of the Episcopal Church, but their deeds toward your faithful people are venomous.

Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from violent men, who have purposed to make my steps stumble. (Psalm 140:4)
Holy Spirit, please guide my steps so that I do not stumble.

The proud have hidden a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set traps for me. (Psalm 140:5)
Jesus, there seems to be no limit to the pride of those who set traps for your little ones, but with your help we can escape from their net.

I said to the LORD: “You are my God; hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD. (Psalm 140:6)
Father, help us pray as Jesus prayed: “Father, your will be done.”

O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle. (Psalm 140:7)
Holy Spirit, help us daily put on the helmet of salvation; for the battle rages all around us.

Do not grant, O LORD, the desires of the wicked; do not further his wicked scheme, lest they be exalted. (Psalm 140:8)
LORD, those who speak of “reconciliation” and “diversity” wage war on your faithful people; do not grant their evil desires.

“As for the head of those who surround me, let the evil of their lips cover them; (Psalm 140:9)
Jesus, this diocese is surrounded by dioceses that have gone astray; protect and deliver us from their evil desires.

Let burning coals fall upon them; let them be cast into the fire, into deep pits, that they rise not up again. (Psalm 140:10)
Holy Spirit, please help us return love for hatred so that the fires of the wicked will be quenched.

Let not a slanderer be established in the earth; let evil hunt the violent man to overthrow him.” (Psalm 140:11)
LORD, hunt out all the lies in the Episcopal Church and cleanse it with the fire of your Holy Spirit.

I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and justice for the poor. (Psalm 140:12)
Jesus, you are our rock, our shield, our great high tower, and we run to you for safety.

Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your name; the upright shall dwell in Your presence. (Psalm 140:13)
Father, help us find our rest in your arms of love.

A word received: Hear, my people; hear me when I speak to you. Pray that my people will listen when I speak.
