Spiritual blindness

March 15, 2008

There are many causes of visual defects:

Glaucoma is the result of too much pressure inside the eyeball.

Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?  Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell. (Ps 43:2b-3)

Son of David, deliver Your church from Satan’s oppression and bless her with an understanding of Your truth.

The lens covering the pupil can become opacified, producing a cataract.

Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. (Mk 10:50)
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (Heb 12:1)

Son of David, bless Your church with a spirit of repentance.

When the retina detaches from the back of the eyeball, darkness ensues.

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness will spread over Egypt—darkness that can be felt.” So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days. (Ex 10:21-22)
They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie. (2 Ths 2:10b-11)

Son of David, bless Your church with a love of Your truth.

Double vision results when the extra-ocular muscles do not work together as one (cross-eyed).

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Cor 4:18)
Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” (Mk 10:48)

Son of David, fix the eyes of Your church on You alone.

The blood vessels supplying nutrients to the eyes can become occluded by scarring, as in diabetic retinopathy.

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.  These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng. Why are you downcast, O my soul?  Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him. (Ps 42:1, 4, 5a)

Son of David, bless Your church with a spirit of worship, joy, thanksgiving, and praise.

Mark 10:46-52

March 15, 2008

Now they came to Jericho. As he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging. (Mark 10:46)
Lord Jesus, we pray for all those who sit by the wayside begging because of their blindness: open the eyes of the physically blind, and open the hearts of and minds of the spiritually blind.

And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” (Mark 10:47)
Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on those who cannot see you and know you.

Then many warned him to be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” (Mark 10:48)
Holy Spirit, help your people ignore all those whose only desire is to be undisturbed; help your little ones by the wayside cry out to Jesus all the more.

So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. Then they called the blind man, saying to him, “Be of good cheer. Rise, he is calling you.” (Mark 10:49)
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace, who brings glad tidings of good things, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!” (Isaiah 52:7) Holy Spirit, help us to be bearers of the good news that Jesus is calling people to himself.

And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus. (Mark 10:50)
Father, please help us throw aside anything that hinders our coming to Jesus.

So Jesus answered and said to him, “What do you want Me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “Rabboni, that I may receive my sight.” (Mark 10:51)
Holy Spirit, plant such a request in the hearts and minds of the leaders and teachers of the Episcopal Church. Grant that they will receive their sight. Help me where I am walking in darkness to receive my sight.

Then Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road. (Mark 10:52)
Jesus, help us make the choice of Bartimaeus: to follow you wherever you go.

Lord, this is a time of great blindness in your church and there are many in your church of whom you spoke about through your prophet Isaiah: “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” (Isaiah 5:20) Have mercy on your people, Jesus, and let the blind see!

A word received: Come to me, my people, come to me. Ask for my blessing.

Saturday: 42, 43: Exodus 10:21-11:8; 2 Corinthians 4:13-18; Mark 10:46-52
Palm Sunday: 103: Zechariah 9:9-12; 1 Timothy 6:12-16; Zechariah 12:9-11, 13:1,7-9; Luke 19:41-48

Bishop Search Prayer

March 15, 2008

This is from the diocese of Southern Virginia:

Bishop Search Prayer
O God, in your wisdom and mercy you have entrusted us to Jesus, your Word made flesh:  Grant us his clear vision, kind heart, and self-giving love, as together we seek a Bishop for this diocese. Through his Spirit may our wills be so gathered into your will that your reign of justice and love come on earth as in heaven. In our blindness enlighten us, from our stubbornness free us, in the breaking of the bread renew us, that in all things and in every creature we may love you and serve you now and to the ages of ages.

Other dioceses in a search process are Rio Grande, Idaho, Texas, Northwest Texas, Northern Michigan, Georgia, Dallas, and South Dakota.

Dallas

March 15, 2008

Nominees for the Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of Dallas are Rev. Ally Perry, Rev. Canon Dr. Neal Michell, Rev. Canon Paul Lambert, Rev. Raymond Jennison, Jr., Rev. Canon David Holland, and Rev. Leander Harding, Ph. D.  The election is March 29.

Dear Heavenly Father,

We pray for the election of a godly priest in the diocese of Dallas who will be one with the apostles, guard the Church’s faith, unity, and discipline, hand on the faith received to those who will carry it on to others, be a faithful pastor to the whole body of Christ, be a wholesome example, share in the leadership of the Church throughout the world, and be a servant of the Church throughout the world.

Stand beside each of these candidates and comfort them.  Prepare a heavenly banquet for each of them.  Anoint them with Your Holy Spirit.  May goodness and mercy follow them all the days of their lives, and may they dwell in the House of the Lord forever.  Amen.

A previous prayer.
