PRAYER TABLE REPORT

January 10, 2009

(Sat., January 10, 2009, 9:30-10:45 a.m., in front of Christ Church, Schenectady; Torre Bissell, David Carlson and Deacon Alan Hart.)

Note: Every single Prayer Table is an amazing experience. Today we had a lot of people coming for prayer and reassurance and hope … and they stayed to talk with us at length in many cases. Bear in mind that this was one of the coldest days in the Table’s history — 10 degrees at the start. The weather was not a deterrent, as you will see.

Another note: Before the Table began, Torre mentioned he had been studying Psalm 138 today. He kept repeating what he had read and felt inside (“…I will bow down toward your holy temple and praise your Name.”) We believe that the praise we felt just extended to the Prayer Table today.

a–indicated anointed with Holy Oil.
c–indicates received one of our yellow Christ Church cards.
t–indicates received one of the wooden crosses Torre gets from Dennis Adams of North Carolina.

t–ANDRE — Repeat visitor who has come a few times off and on but not lately. He asked for prayer for success in finding a job. His girlfriend is pregnant (they already have a 3-year-old together) and he needs work. Besides his own troubles, he said his sister ” … is locked up right now because she was found in the wrong place at the wrong time.” He said he and his girlfriend plan to be married by a Justice of the Peace on Valentine’s Day.

LINDA — This likeable lady comes to the Table every week on her way to get the bus. We prayed for general provision and protection and that she will received signs today that God is working in her life.

c,t — DAVID — Deacon Alan and David prayed for this young man (and Linda, too) while Torre was still praying for Andre. David wanted prayer ” … to be freed; for deliverance.” The Lord knows the details, but that was all David would divulge. We prayed for his freedom for whatever he needs to be released from.

(A man in a Mooradian’s furniture truck waved at us enthusiastically ad he drove by. That always gives us a big lift!)

PAT (Frank Upshur’s daughter) — Pat, another regular, asked for continued prayers for her nephews NICK (kidney illness) and KEITH (needs job), and also for grand-daughter KIESHA (has thyroid disease; getting tests this week and is “kind of scared.”

a,t,c — CHARLIE — Sat and talked with us for quite awhile. He said he just started a new job and wants prayer that the job will last and he will succeed with it. He also asked for God’s help in trying to stop smoking and is proud that he has not had a smoke since the New Year began and wants it to continue. He is a member of another church in our neighborhood but said he may come by Sunday to visit our church as well.

a,t,c — ROBIN — Middle-aged woman who asked for prayer for protection from cancer because she said “… there is a lot of it in our family right now.” We prayed for her protection from cancer and all diseases of body, mind and spirit.

VIVIAN — A young girl, perhaops 13 or 14. She asked for prayers ” … just for everything, I guess.”

c,t — MATTHEW — This man, perhaps in his late 20s, was not dressed very warmly — just a couple of heavy sweaters but no coat or gloves or hat. Matthew said he is living at the motel down the street for now but wants to get back home to Ithaca where he has a house. Right now he cannot go there because there is “a technicality.” He recently was incarcerated and just got out. We prayed for him to be safe, provided for, and to be able to go home soon.

MARLENE — The enthusiastic young lady who stopped the last two weeks (and gave us hugs!) was in a big hurry today and just waved and blew kisses at us as she walked by. “I can’t stop today, but …God bless you!” she said.

DONNA JEAN — David called out to this woman walking in the street rather than the sidewalk (which was very icy), and she came over to the edge of the sidewalk and we carefully prayed for her overall provision, protection and safety right there.

a,t,t — EZEKIEL and his young son, ANDREW — They were walking by after ALMOST stopping earlier from the other direction. Ezekiel has an infection in his left ear, so we anointed him and prayed for healing. Andrew received prayer to grow up to become “…the man God intends him to be.”

t–CECIL — This well-dressed, well-spoken man was on his way to a service at another area church and freely accepted our offer for prayer. He said, “Hey, … you can never get enough prayer.”

t,c — LAURA — Perhaps the most unusual visitor we have ever had at the Table. She was the passenger in a van which pulled up in front of the church and stopped near the bus stop. She got out, set up a tripod and put a camera on it, pointed it at us and said, “Do you fellows mind if I take your picture praying for someone?” She came over and spoke to us afterward. It turns out Laura and her husband, JIM, have begun a project what they hope will be a book of photos and anecdotes and that it will be called “America Still Prays!” She intends to travel to all 50 states and take photos of people in all kinds of praying situations. She has already taken pictures of people praying in diners, in front of buildings, etc. We told her some of the stories of people who have stopped in the past year.

t–MARCUS — This teen-aged boy stopped for prayer for everything in general. We prayed God will guide him today and all days.

One final note: After the Table, Deacon Alan visited BERNICE, his 91-year-old family friend who is facing her final days/hours at Ellis Hospital’s Long-Term Care unit. She is still coherent, not receiving water and quite sedated. She still recognizes familiar faces. We prayed together for her at her bedside. She still clings to the Vatican cross Torre gave Alan to give to her.

St. Asaph’s

January 10, 2009

The Revd Canon Gregory Cameron, 49, who is Deputy Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, was chosen by members of the Electoral College of the Church in Wales to succeed Bishop John Davies as Bishop of St Asaph. The town of St. Asaph developed around a 6th century Celtic monastery founded by St. Kentigern in exile. His 965 disciples, of whom Asaph was one, included three choirs. “As soon as one choir had terminated its service in church, immediately another entering commenced it: and that again being concluded another entered to celebrate.” St. Kentigern used frequently to pray standing in the icy cold river, and once, having suffered very severely under this hardship, he sent the boy, Asaph, who was then attending him, to bring wood to burn and warm him. Asaph brought him live coals in his apron, and the miracle revealed to Kentigern the sanctity of his disciple. So when the old man was recalled to Scotland, Asaph was consecrated bishop to succeed him, and became the first Welsh bishop of the see.

Dear Heavenly Father,
We lift up Gregory and pray that You release Your Holy Spirit upon him. May he bring the fire of the Holy Spirit to this city of music. May there be voices in this diocese continually praising You, joining with the choirs of angels and archangels in givng glory to Your name. Amen.

Moderator of Pakistan

January 10, 2009

UPDATE: Rev. Canon Kenneth Kearon, Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, has announced that Bp. Azariah will not be in attendance in Alexandria due to a scheduling conflict.

Rt. Rev. Samuel Azariah, Bishop of Raiwind, has been elected Moderator of the Church of Pakistan. Bishop Azariah lives in a nation where Islam is wedded to the state, and Christians undergo persecution. This has shaped his advocacy for religious tolerance and non-violence.
His Lambeth reflection was about relationship:

It is only in sustained relationship with Jesus Christ, that our life bears meaning, producing the fruit of Love, Truth and Unity within the mission and service of the Church, the sole purpose being to give Glory to the Controller, Creator and Sustainer of all life.

There is a history of infighting amongst the Pakistani bishops.

The Bible contains the story of another Azariah living in an alien culture; he is better known as Abednego. The Apocrypha contains “The Prayer of Azariah and the Song of the Three Jews,” additions to Daniel that record the prayers and hymns of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the furnace. It is an incredible prayer of confession, humility, and praise.

Dear Heavenly Father,
We lift up to You Bishop Samuel Azariah and the Anglican province of Pakistan. Sustain them in Jesus Christ that they may produce love, truth, and unity to give glory to You. In all their difficulties, may they praise and glorify and bless You with one voice:

Blessed art thou, O Lord God of our fathers: and to be praised and exalted above all for ever.
And blessed is thy glorious and holy name: and to be praised and exalted above all for ever. . . .
O ye priests of the Lord, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.
O ye servants of the Lord, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.
O ye spirits and souls of the righteous, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.
O ye holy and humble men of heart, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever. . . .
O give thanks unto the Lord, because he is gracious: for his mercy endureth for ever.
O all ye that worship the Lord, bless the God of gods, praise him, and give him thanks: for his mercy endureth for ever.

Amen.

Primates

January 10, 2009

O God,
We confess and praise You with all our heart; before the “gods” will we sing praises to You. We praise Your name for Your unfailing love and faithfulness; for Your promises are backed by all the honor of Your name.
We lift up to You the primates of the Anglican Communion–William, Phillip, Paul, Mauricio, Bernard, Frederick, Martin, Dirokpa, Rowan, Paul, Ian, Alan, Nathaniel, Mouneer, Benjamin, Francis, Ellison, Carlos, Stephen, Peter, Joel, Samuel, James, Ignacio, Emmanuel, Idris, John, John, Thabo, Gregory, Daniel, Valentino, Henry, Katharine, Barry, Justice, and Drexel. May they hear Your words and thank You. May they sing of Your ways for Your glory is great.
In their troubles, may their hearts be humble. Guard the primates from pride. Protect them from the anger of the ungodly. Reach out Your hand, save the Anglican Communion, and fulfill Your purposes. Your love, O LORD, endures forever—do not abandon the works of Your hands.

Operation Lightning Thunder

January 10, 2009

The Lord’s Resistance Army is scattered and weakened under a joint military operation of Uganda, Southern Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo named Operation Lightning Thunder. This is a critical juncture. Can the LRA be brought to dissolution or will the scattering simply establish them over a broader geographic region?

O Lord God of Israel,
When Pharoah enslaved the children of Israel, You sent thunder and hail upon the land, and the fire ran along the ground. Joseph Kony, Okot Odhiambo, Dominic Ongwen, and the other leaders of the LRA have enslaved the children of Uganda, Sudan, and the Congo.
Show Yourself strong in the defense of these children! Take pity, and set the children of Africa free from the bondage of the LRA. Rain Your thunder, hail, and lightning upon the LRA leaders and upon their stores of weapons and ammunition. Bring about their defeat, we pray. Amen.

      Notes from the Front Line

Ellis Hospital Report, (Ellis Center; B-5, B-6 long-term care floors, Deacon Alan Hart)
This is an update from Wednesday on the two ladies there who were very ill:

BERNICE — I am very sad to say Bernice, who was a childhood friend of my Dad and his brothers and sister in Carman during the 1930s, is apparently near the end. She was taken off water this morning and was given Last Rites of the Roman Catholic faith. I visited with her with chaplain Father John Varno after today’s Catholic service; he anointed her and we prayed the Our Father at her bedside with many of her family members. I read the 121st Psalm to her. She was coherent and even tried to sing for us, but she cannot speak. (She suffered a stroke over last weekend which has paralyzed her whole right side. She is 91. Her daughter today told me Bernice has 22 great-grandchildren, so she has been blessed. She is still wearing the Spanish cross which I gave her two weeks ago. Torre Bissell gave me four of them to pass out to special residents I see. Bernice’s daughter says she holds it constantly.)

RITA — The news on Rita is much more cheerful. She was sitting up in a chair and she could see me today. She said she still “hurts” and she is still getting oxygen. Two days ago she could not see anything. Rita is 95 and just a joy to be around. I prayed with her and anointed her today for continued healing.
