South Carolina

September 19, 2009

A court ruling in South Carolina has turned the Dennis Canon on its head in that state. This impacts Anglicans from the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church in North America. I find it ironic that the ruling came down on Rosh Hashanah.
Today is the feast day for Theodore of Taursus, Archbishop of Canterbury in the 7th century. When he arrived from Rome, the English Church was decimated by plague and torn with strife over rival Celtic and Roman customs. Through his leadership, unity was achieved. May he join us in praying for our brothers and sisters in South Carolina.

Dear Father,
We trust in You. We hope in You. We know you hear the prayers of Your children in South Carolina. We know You will be their light. We wait for You. Accomplish through Your children in South Carolina the establishment of Your kingdom in that state. May they lead people to obedience to You by what they say and do–by the power of signs and miracles, through the power of the Spirit. Amen.

Update on Sudan

September 19, 2009

Reuters article on the Wernoyl attack, where 38 people were killed, including Archdeacon Joseph Mabior Garang while saying Morning Prayer at the altar.
Global Zenit News account of prayer pilgrimage crying out for deliverance from the Lord’s Resistance Army. The LRA has continued apace with their grisly deeds:

A week after that attack, six people were ambushed in a forest and nailed to pieces of wood fastened to the ground. Those who discovered the bodies several days later likened it to a grotesque crucifixion scene.

O Lord, so much innocent blood is being shed! The words of our prayers are inadequate, but hearken to our brothers’ blood crying out to You from the ground, like a voice calling for revenge. Surely the prayers of their blood reach the throne room of heaven.
We join our voices, Lord. We join our voices to the prayers of the saints around the globe. We join our voices to the blood of the martyrs crying out from the soil of Sudan. We join our voices to the heart of Jesus, sitting at Your right hand in glory. We join our voices. Amen.

Genesis 4:10

Matthew 5:17-20

September 19, 2009

“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.” (Matthew 5:17)
Jesus, please restore to your church the desire to find your fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets.

“For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” (Matthew 5:18 )
Holy Spirit, help the leaders and teachers and people of the Episcopal Church hear Jesus’ words.

“Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:19)
Holy Father, please bring to repentance all those who claim our modern understanding and knowledge have done away with the need to obey the Law and the Prophets.

“For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:20)
Jesus, restore to the Episcopal Church true righteousness that leads to obedience of you and your word. Thank you.

A word received: Hear me, my people.
I AM speaking; who is listening?
Hear my word to you; write it on your heart.
Dig into my word; let it speak to your heart.
Don’t stand afar off; dig into my word.
