I don’t have time email all the details. Something beyond awesome has happened this past week and it’s all flowed out of Nigel’s sickness. There’s a powerful river of healing flowing from Nigel, even though he is seriously ill.

Subject: A prayer for Nigel Mumford as he passes through the waters
Torre,
Attached [see below] is a prayer for Nigel as he passes through the waters of fluid in his lungs. May our gracious God carry him safely through the deep waters to dry ground. As Nigel rests safe and secure in the strong arms of the Lord Jesus, may he be blessed with the joy of deep, intimate fellowship with his Savior.
In the fearless peace of the Lord, Elizabeth Allen

Save Nigel Mumford, O God,
for the waters have come up to his neck.
He has come into the deep waters;
the floods engulf him.
He and his family are worn out calling for help;
his throat is parched.

Rescue Nigel from the mire.
Do not let him sink.
Deliver Nigel from those who hate him,
from the deep waters.
He is in pain and distress.
May Your salvation, O God, protect Nigel
and all those who love him and are praying for him.

But now, this is what the Lord says –
He who created him.
“Fear not, for I have redeemed Nigel.
I have called him by name;
he is Mine.

When Nigel passes through the waters,
I will be with him;
And when he passes through the rivers,
they will not sweep over him.
When he walks through the fire,
he will not be burned.
For I am the Lord, his God,
The Holy One of Israel, his Savior.”

Adapted from Psalm 69 and Isaiah 43: 1-3

To Nigel and Lynn,
With ongoing prayer for Nigel’s full and rapid recovery,

Dearest Lord, Your dear son Nigel continues to struggle in his fight for life and breath while your people fight in prayer to win against the enemy. Lord, the thread that runs through the posted scriptures and prayers seem to indicate that this is not the time for our brother to come home to You, but rather to regain his ministry. Lord, we ask you for an indication that You have turned the tide. Specifically, we pray that the pathogens that have caused this pneumonia will be utterly destroyed and leave his body. While Brother Nigel rests, speak to his spirit. Tell him what You want his future to be.
Lord, today as I read Daniel 9, I saw that Daniel (vs. 20) was speaking and praying and confessing his own sin and the sin of his people Israel and presenting his supplication before the Lord. Then, Daniel received his vision. But Daniel’s instructions did not come until after confession of sin — not only his own, but those of his people. Perhaps this would be a good time for us as the people of God to confess our sins and truly humble ourselves before You, oh, Father. We rest in your grace and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Hear our prayer, O, Lord. In the name of our wonderful Savior and Lord Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

I’m ready and willing to pray for Nigel from 6:30 to 7:00 in the evening. Would that be OK? If it would be better, I’ll take from around 10 in the morning or at noon. Whatever you say is best. Let me know. I’ve been praying “whenever” – a lot – lately.

South Carolina

October 23, 2009

Today’s lectionary reading includes Psalm 31, which makes for an apt prayer for the diocese of South Carolina, if you adapt it from the first person to the third person. In the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, concerns over the recent actions taken in July at the General Convention, and over matters of Scripture, polity and authority, have prompted diocese officials to call for a special convention tomorrow.

Ezra 3:10-13

October 23, 2009

When the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, the priests stood in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the Lord, according to the ordinance of David king of Israel. (Ezra 3:10)
Jesus, we pray that the foundation of your church today will be built on no other foundation than the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. (From Jude 3)

And they sang responsively, praising and giving thanks to the Lord: “For he is good, for his mercy endures forever toward Israel.” Then all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. (Ezra 3:11)
But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. (Jude 20-21)

But many of the priests and Levites and heads of the fathers’ houses, old men who had seen the first temple, wept with a loud voice when the foundation of this temple was laid before their eyes. Yet many shouted aloud for joy, so that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people, for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the sound was heard afar off. (Ezra 3:12-13)
Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling,
      And to present you faultless
Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,
      To God our Savior,
      Who alone is wise,
      Be glory and majesty,
      Dominion and power,
      Both now and forever.
      Amen.
(Jude 24-25)

Hi Torre,
I agree that we would do well to continue 24×7 prayer support in an intentional and organized manner. I’d be happy to sign up for 1/2 hour to 1 hour per day. What do you think?
Blessings, -Scott

[I fully agree and ask all of you to continue praying for 1/2 hour to 1 hour per day while Nigel is critically ill. God is doing a major work here. I know of one person in our diocese who received a major spiritual healing while she was praying for Nigel. Torre]

Torre,
I am no where near as eloquent as many people’s prayers that you have shared with us but as I pray and it has been much more often than the “assigned times” I had chosen.
I have had dreams and day-time images that represented a ferocious, deadly serious battle for Nigel’s life, his soul, his very being. I get repeated senses of contrasts — dark and light, good and evil, etc. I also continue to get a sense of don’t stop, pray even harder and more deeply — the evil one is lurking, waiting for us to get tired or distracted.
God Bless, Flo

Torre -
Elizabeth Allen’s message mentions an attached picture of Nigel. None was attached to your message. Sally and I think it’s a nice idea and would helpful to those who may not know Nigel personally. Can you send out the one Elizabeth says is attached? If you don’t have it, can you come up with a picture of Nigel to send out to your list?
Thanks, Forest

A prayer for Nigel

October 23, 2009

2 Corinthians 3:17
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

Holy Spirit,
Breathe into Nigel’s nostrils the breath of life. Whisper Your love into the bronchial airways and alveoli of his lungs, and free him from the bondage of this illness. Amen.

Good morning, Torre….blessings to you and to Jean.

A prophetic friend of mine, a pastor from MA, who has met with Nigel and has joined in this prayer effort had the following for me.
It supports your sense to press on with the prayer schedule. I pass this on to you, especially if you have been having a sense about continuing the 24/7 support.

I should mention that when he first began praying for Nigel urgently, he saw the death angel. He did not see that Tuesday night. This morning:
‘Happy to hear the positive progress being made. However it is not a time to let up- I think I see the enemy pulling back only to regroup, to lull the prayer teams into a victory mindset but thus must remain vigilant. ‘

I pass this on to you only because I sense I should.
God bless you greatly, and keep you both close, close, close to Him,
love Susan and Ralph

Subject: Prayers for Nigel that you might want to post
Torre,
I have been so thankful for your blog posting updates on Nigel’s condition. Attached and below please find three prayers that I have written or adapted for Nigel. I just sent one to your blog, but it is more beautiful in its original form, below. The text below is an e-mail that I sent out to all of the members of our OSL chapter in Winston-Salem, NC.
I’m just telling you this so that you can tell your friends in New York that the people of North Carolina love Nigel. We have sent him a very special symbol of our love in this small Bible. I believe that the Lord is going to work powerfully through the prayers of His people to bless Nigel and many others in years to come.
Thanks again for your very helpful blog!
With hope and expectancy for what the Lord is going to do, Elizabeth Allen
P.S. Below is the text of the e-mail that I sent to our OSL members on 10/20/09. Feel free to post any of my prayers for Nigel.

Dear friends,
Rev. Nigel Mumford is fighting for his life. Nigel is the former Royal Naval commando and drill instructor who has devoted his life to healing prayer. He is one of the leaders in Christian healing ministry in the US today. Several of us heard him (and experienced healing) in Greenville a few weeks ago. He was to speak at Healing Winds this past weekend, but developed a very serious pneumonia. He is in the ICU, on ventilator requiring 90% oxygen (improved from 100% earlier today). His oxygen saturation has stabilized in the 90′s. He is on antibiotics, though his pneumonia may be viral.
Spiritually, it seems to be a pitched battle. I am writing these words to give voice to the prayers that so many people are lifting up for Nigel. Let us pray, and keep praying, all through the night and day. Let us ask our friends to pray and ask their friends to pray, so that there is a circle of prayer surrounding Nigel that extends all over the world. For an update and to join the 24-hour prayer vigil for him, go to http://anglicanprayer.wordpress.com/. You might also like to read more about Nigel and print out one of the pictures in the attached file, so that you can look at his picture as you pray for him.

May the Spirit of the Living God
breathe life into Nigel’s lungs.
May He encourage Nigel in every fiber of his being
to keep fighting the good fight.
May the Lord Jesus gently pick Nigel up,
hold him close, and carry him through.
For He who is in Nigel
is greater than he who is in the world.
May the healing love that Nigel has given to so many people
return to him in good measure, pressed down and running over.
May we all, along with Nigel,
know the fearless peace of the Lord.
And may we rejoice with him in years to come,
celebrating the awesome way
that the Lord answered the prayers of His people
with His great compassion and unfailing love.

When I was thinking about how to pray for him tonight, I kept thinking of Nigel enthusiastically shouting, “God is BRILLIANT!” I looked up “brilliant” in the concordance and found it in the passage from 1 Timothy 6 that is attached and below.
I’ve also attached a brief passage from Acts, calling us to great boldness and asking God to stretch out His hand with healing power. Feel free to forward whatever you would like.
With the FEARLESS PEACE that Nigel talks about, Elizabeth Allen

THANK YOU, FATHER, FOR YOUR BELOVED SON NIGEL,
a man of God whom we love very much.
His life is a godly life, filled with
faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.
Help him to
KEEP FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT
for the true faith.

We earnestly pray, Father, that You will help Nigel to
HOLD TIGHTLY TO THE ETERNAL LIFE
to which You have called him,
which he has confessed so well
before so many witnesses.

LORD GOD, YOU GIVE LIFE TO ALL.
Nigel has obeyed Your command without wavering.
You are the blessed and only almighty God,
The KING of all kings
and LORD of all lords.
You alone can never die.
All honor and power are Yours forever.

SHINE YOUR BRILLIANT LIGHT
into Nigel’s lungs, body, mind, and spirit,
for You are light
and in You is no darkness at all.

Guard Nigel, just as he has guarded
all that You have entrusted to him.
RICHLY GIVE HIM EVERYTHING THAT HE NEEDS
for his trust is in You, Lord Jesus.

Adapted from 1 Timothy 6: 11-20 and 1 John 1: 5 (NLT)

O Lord, give us, your servants,
GREAT BOLDNESS
as we pray for Your beloved son Nigel Mumford.

Stretch out Your hand to him with HEALING POWER;

May MIRACULOUS SIGNS AND WONDERS
be done in Nigel’s life, restoring him to vibrant health
through the name of
YOUR HOLY SERVANT JESUS.

Adapted from Acts 4: 29-31
