Psalm 91:9-16

October 18, 2009

Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place, (Psalm 91:9)
LORD, you are from everlasting to everlasting and you are my refuge, and underneath I am held up by your everlasting arms. (From Deuteronomy 33:27a)

No evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; (Psalm 91:10)
Jesus, please let our home be a haven of peace and healing for all who come here.

For he shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. (Psalm 91:11)
Father, please command your angels to watch over and guard me and my family.

In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. (Psalm 91:12)
Holy Spirit, you helped Jesus recognize Satan’s use of this verse as a false choice to tempt him; please help us recognize all the false choices that come our way for what they are.

You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot. (Psalm 91:13)
Father, help us tread down all that is evil among us.

“Because he has set his love upon me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known my name.” (Psalm 91:14)
LORD, please help us know and abide in the power of your name.

“He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.” (Psalm 91:15)
Jesus, we call upon you to lead and guide this diocese in this time of trouble in your church. Deliver us and bring us to the honor only you can give.

“With long life I will satisfy him, and show him my salvation.” (Psalm 91:16)
Holy Spirit, please help us to be vigorous, sturdy and fruitful in old age. As our days are, so let our strength be. (From Deuteronomy 33:25)

A word received: I AM. Look to me for guidance. I will show you the way.

The bride of Christ

October 18, 2009

We have some of the coolest readers. One of them, Georgia, posted this prayer as a comment.

There is a river,
the streams whereof
shall make glad the city of God,
the holy place of the tabernacles
of the most High.
God is in the midst of her;
she shall not be moved:
God shall help her
and that right early.

Be still and know that I AM GOD.
I will be exalted among the heathen,
I will be exalted in the earth.
The LORD of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our refuge.
Selah. (Psalm 46: 4-5, 10-12)

Dear Holy Father,
Let Thy Peace and All Blessings
descend upon Your Church, the Holy City,
Your Bride, The Holy Jerusalem
Wash and restore her to Yourself
Help her to remove the debris
of false gods, false worship,
false words, false teachings,
false fire, false prophecies,
false devotion to You,
false love for each other.
To clothe herself with the garments
of salvation, praise and compassion.
Help her – rebuild her walls,
Restore her to Your design and decree,
A city compact and ordered by You,
flowing with the Water of Life,
Lit by Your Holy Presence
Secure and free in Your Truth,
Joyful in Your Love and Grace.
A place of overflowing Peace and All blessings,
That flow from You in true worship
in the reverent fear of The LORD.
In the Name above all names,
Jesus Christ, Amen

Prayer Table Report

October 18, 2009

Christ Church Schenectady Prayer Table Report October 17, 9:15-10:30 AM Torre Bissell and Don Foust
+–indicates received wooden cross made by Dennis Adams of North Carolina.

It felt like November today; the weather was cold, overcast, and breezy. While the season has definitely changed, there is no change in the needs of the people along State Street. They are hurting and searching for answers.

The Prayer Table has become a regular stop for a number of folks in the Neighborhood, and we have added their names to the bottom of the Prayer Table Report.

Man riding by on a bicycle– Made the sign of the cross. “God bless you. God bless everybody.”

+Youseff and his dog– “Just trying to keep the faith”. Took crosses for his wife +Erica and son +Youseff, Jr.

+Calvin– He and his wife +Gloria are both looking for employment. We prayed for provision.

Lawrence–walking by–did not stop. Prayed for blessings in his life.

+John–recently lost his mother (Betsy Mae). Prayed for peace in his life and the soul of his departed mother.

+Christina– young woman on her way to the bus. Waited for John to finish at the Prayer Table, then came forward without prompting. Prayed for a good day. Took crosses for her two children++.

Kayla–(regular)–Two things were different about Kayla today: she was wearing a bright red jacket (normally she dresses in grays and blacks) and she was singing aloud as she was listening to her music through her headphones. We prayed for healing of past memories and for her family.

+Tommie–52 year old man–self-described Irish Catholic. Due to the economic down-turn, he and his wife Cathleen are searching for a place to live. Tommie said he was “different–he and his wife have been married 35 years”. Tommie was already wearing a cross. He took the wooden cross we gave him and put it next to a Bible he was carrying in his backpack. We thank God for Tommie and Cathleen’s faithfulness and pray that they will find a place to live.

+Lisa–was searching for her daughter who lived on Clarendon Street in Schenectady. We prayed for protection and that she would find her daughter. Lisa had 5 children+++++ with her. We prayed with the children that they would come to know the Lord.

+Don–When asked he wanted prayer he said, “Why not”. We prayed for Don’s health and the health of the Neighborhood.

Jim (regular)–Jim’s new habit when he stops at the Prayer Table is to thank God. In the midst of all of the homelessness in the community, today he thanked God for his home. We prayed for continued healing of Jim’s memories.

Tony (stopped last week at the Prayer Table)–Prayed for another good week.

One of the “girls” who work on State Street– When asked if she wanted prayer, she said, “Not today”. She then proceeded to a near-by phone booth and called someone. A car pulled up next to her and she got in. Please pray that she be saved from “a life of death”.

+TJ–young man. At the urging of his girl friend, he came to the Prayer Table. We prayed for provision.

Man on a bicycle towing a cart of bottles–We said, “God bless you” to him. He replied, “God blesses me every day”.

+Will–At the Prayer Table, people have asked for prayers for health, protection, their family, peace, even their cat. This young man asked for a stronger relationship with the God. He also asked that his fiancée (Michelle) would come to know Jesus. We prayed for strength and that Will would be a witness to Michelle. We also thanked God for Will’s faithfulness. Will also asked about services at Christ Church, and we gave him a card indicating the times for services. Please pray that Will and Michelle will grow closer to each other and closer to the Lord.

Prayer Table Regulars

Kayla– Pray for healing in her life after being raped. Pray for her mother Laura, her son Nassir, her brother Josh, and Josh’s son Deanthony.

Jim–Pray for healing in his life from abusive parents and for his personal peace after the death of his 31 year old son Robert.

Bill–Pray for his health and no more epileptic seizures.

Hagar’s flask

October 17, 2009

Genesis 21
And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow shot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept. . . . And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.

Lord, we are in a dry land. Open our eyes that we may see the hidden wells You have provided for us. May we be like Hagar’s flask and carry living water to Your childrren. Amen.

Psalm 20:1-3

October 17, 2009

May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble; may the name of the God of Jacob defend you; (Psalm 20:1)
Lord Jesus, your church is deeply troubled, be with us and defend us; help us abide in the power of your name.

May he send you help from the sanctuary, and strengthen you out of Zion; (Psalm 20:2)
Holy Spirit, please strengthen us and strengthen Bishop Bill.

May he remember all your offerings, and accept your burnt sacrifice. (Psalm 20:3)
Father, receive our offerings; help us daily offer ourselves and all that we possess to you. Thank you for receiving us.

A word received: Yield this day to me.

A word received: Look to me; keep your eyes on me.

The river is that people who believe on Jesus

October 16, 2009

John 7:38
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

Revelation 22:1
Then the angel showed me a river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.

Ezekiel 47
In my vision, the man brought me back to the entrance of the Temple. There I saw a stream flowing east from beneath the door of the Temple and passing to the right of the altar on its south side. The man brought me outside the wall through the north gateway and led me around to the eastern entrance. There I could see the water flowing out through the south side of the east gateway. . . .
He asked me, “Have you been watching, son of man?” Then he led me back along the riverbank. When I returned, I was surprised by the sight of many trees growing on both sides of the river. Then he said to me, “This river flows east through the desert into the valley of the Dead Sea. The waters of this stream will make the salty waters of the Dead Sea fresh and pure. There will be swarms of living things wherever the water of this river flows. Fish will abound in the Dead Sea, for its waters will become fresh. Life will flourish wherever this water flows. . . . Fruit trees of all kinds will grow along both sides of the river. The leaves of these trees will never turn brown and fall, and there will always be fruit on their branches. There will be a new crop every month, for they are watered by the river flowing from the Temple. The fruit will be for food and the leaves for healing.”

Dear Heavenly Father,
We claim Your Holy Scripture. Your people bring life to this world. Your people stand against Satan and death. The words of their tongues will turn bitter water into sweet. New life–biological & spiritual–will abound.
Your people bring food to this world. They provide physical food through through Your Spirit by the prayers of their mouths, the labors of their hands, and their study of Your creation. Their lives carry love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance.
Your people rebuke sickness. Their presence can heal. Their prayers open gateways of Your mercy. Their touch brings new life.
Lord, we cry out for rivers of living water to flow out from Jerusalem and to our nation. We cry out for rivers of living water to flow through the church in the United States. We cry out for rivers of living water to flow to Mississippi, to Yazoo, and its church.
Flow, rivers, flow. Flow with power. Flow today. Amen.

The idea for the combination of these three scriptures came from Francis Frangipane.

Matthew 11:1-6

October 16, 2009

Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding his twelve disciples, that he departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities. And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples and said to him, “Are you the Coming One, or do we look for another?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them.” (Matthew 11:1-5)
Jesus, we long to see the signs of your ministry among us:
            the blind (both physically and spiritually blind) seeing;
            the lame walking and leaping for joy;
            the lepers being cleansed;
            the deaf hearing;
the dead being raised up and brought to new life; and
the poor having the gospel preached to them.

“And blessed is he who is not offended because of me.” (Matthew 11:6)
Holy Spirit, turn the hearts and lives around of all those who are offended because of Jesus and his faithful witnesses in this diocese. Thank you.

Psalm 119:25-32 The Message
I’m feeling terrible—I couldn’t feel worse!
Get me on my feet again. You promised, remember?
When I told my story, you responded;
train me well in your deep wisdom.
Help me understand these things inside and out
so I can ponder your miracle-wonders.
My sad life’s dilapidated, a falling-down barn;
build me up again by your Word.
Barricade the road that goes Nowhere;
grace me with your clear revelation.
I choose the true road to Somewhere,
I post your road signs at every curve and corner.
I grasp and cling to whatever you tell me;
God, don’t let me down!
I’ll run the course you lay out for me
if you’ll just show me how.

Dear Jesus,
God’s Holy Word witnesses to You, the Word. You are the door, the gate to understanding, the entrance to God’s abiding place. Stir in the clergy of the diocese of Mississippi a hunger for Your Word. As they meditate on Holy Scripture, grant them an unfolding revelation of Your truth. Help them to recognize lies and turn away from them. Expand their understanding and build up this diocese. May they cling to You. Amen.

From Psalms 5, 18, and 119

October 15, 2009

A word received: You are in my care.

Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my meditation. (Psalm 5:1)
Father, hear our cry to you for your church and your people.

Give heed to the voice of my cry, my King and my God, for to you I will pray. (Psalm 5:2)
Jesus, hear the cry of our hearts.

My voice you shall hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning I will direct it to you, and I will look up. (Psalm 5:3)
Lord Jesus, I look up to you and cry out to you.

But let all those rejoice who put their trust in you; let them ever shout for joy, because you defend them; let those also who love your name be joyful in you. (Psalm 5:11)
Holy Spirit, help us give voice to our joy in Jesus.

For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor you will surround him as with a shield. (Psalm 5:12)
Father, clothe us in the righteousness of Jesus and protect us from all assaults of the evil one. Thank you for hearing me as I pray.

A word received: I AM speaking; keep listening.

How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to your word. (Psalm 119:9)
Father, we pray for the young men and women of this diocese: that they will take heed of your word and that you will cleanse their way.

With my whole heart I have sought you; oh, let me not wander from your commandments! (Psalm 119:10)
Jesus, I am still double-minded about obeying your commandments; I say one thing and do another. Please set my feet on your straight and narrow path and keep me there.

Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against you. (Psalm 119:11)
Holy Spirit, let your word be lodged in my heart.

Blessed are you, O Lord! Teach me your statutes. (Psalm 119:12)
Holy Spirit, please write your statutes on my heart.

A word received: Come to me, return to me. Pray for my people — they are lost and wandering.

I will love you, O Lord, my strength. (Psalm 18:1)
Jesus, you are my strength — the strength of my heart, my soul, my mind, my body.

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. (Psalm 18:2)
Jesus, you are all this to me, and even more: you are the one who daily visits me with your presence.

I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies. (Psalm 18:3)
Jesus, you will save me fro all my enemies including the last enemy — death. Thank you.

Mississippi clergy conference

October 14, 2009

Dear Father,
Your Son Jesus is the Messiah, who will reign on David’s throne forever.
He entered Jersalem on a colt. May the clergy and laity of Mississippi be willing to carry Jesus into their communities.
The people shouted, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!” May we be bold in proclaiming Your kingdom in Mississippi.
Jesus called His house a house of prayer for all nations. Father, You have given the nations to Jesus for His inheritance. May the Episcopal diocese of Mississippi be part of the inheritance of Jesus and may it become a house of prayer for all nations.
Father, we put our trust in Jesus. If there are spiritual chains that have kept the Epsicopal diocese of Mississippi from running to You, break those chains with His iron scepter. Loose Your sons and daughters. Free them to live in the Spirit and walk in the Spirit.
Bring to our minds those persons for whom we harbor unforgiveness that we may forgive them and that You also may forgive us. Help us to be teachable and serve Your Son. In His hands is all authority in heaven and on earth. Amen.
Psalm 2, Mark 11

Mississippi clergy conference

October 13, 2009

Commences today.

For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground . . . . Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:2-5

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Revelation 22:1-2

Jesus, You are the tree of life, Your Spirit bearing fruit, Your torn flesh for the healing of the nations. We plead Your healing over the Mississippi clergy conference and Your life over the entire diocese. Amen.

Praise and mystery

Revelation 5:5-6
And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

O Seven-fold Lion and Lamb, worthy are You. Amen.

2 Corinthians 4:18
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Proverbs 18:21a
Death and life are in the power of the tongue.

Dear Heavenly Father,
May all those attending the Mississippi clergy conference look upon one another and fix their eyes on the unseen, the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
May they speak whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, may they speak on these things. Amen.

Praise

October 11, 2009

Psalm 104:1-3 Amp
BLESS (AFFECTIONATELY, gratefully praise) the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, You are very great! You are clothed with honor and majesty–[You are the One] Who covers Yourself with light as with a garment, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain or a tent, Who lays the beams of the upper room of His abode in the waters [above the firmament], Who makes the clouds His chariot, Who walks on the wings of the wind,

Psalm 65:11-13 Amp
You crown the year with Your bounty and goodness, and the tracks of Your [chariot wheels] drip with fatness. The [luxuriant] pastures in the uncultivated country drip [with moisture], and the hills gird themselves with joy. The meadows are clothed with flocks, the valleys also are covered with grain; they shout for joy and sing together.

O Lord Jesus,
You walk through the firmament of heaven, sowing stars and galaxies, and over the earth, scattering life in Your wake. Before Your resurrection You walked on water, and after You walked through walls.
Yet in all of Your grandeur, You chose to walk on the dusty roads of Palestine, in the busy marketplaces, and into the homes of fishermen and tax collectors.
We are not worthy, Lord, but we thank You. We join our voices with the hills and valleys, the meadows and the firmament of heaven, and sing praise to Your name. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord. Amen.

Mississippi clergy conference

October 11, 2009

To commence on Tuesday.

O God,
Praise waits for You in Gray Center. To You shall the vow of obedience be complete. To You who hears prayer shall all flesh come. Blessed are those whom You choose, who approach You, for they shall dwell in Your courts. They shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your abiding place.
Let all those that put their trust in You rejoice. Let them ever shout for joy because You defend them. Let them that love Your name be joyful in You. For You, Lord, bless the righteous. With favor and good will You surround those who are in right standing with You. Amen.
Psalm 65:1-4, 5:11-12
