Father Nigel Mumford

December 16, 2009

I’ve shared this story before. Years ago, I was on a village ramble in Oxfordshire. We came upon a weeping willow on the bank of a stream. Part of the root system was submerged in the stream, and part encased in soil. Tears were dripping from each leaf.

Dear Heavenly Father,
There is a stream, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. We beseech You to send a stream of that living water into the spirits of Nigel and Lynn. May they be so hungry for Your living water that the very blood vessels of their bodies will carry it. May living water flow through their spirits and to every cell in their bodies. May they rest in You and be healed. Amen.

Psalm 49:5-9

December 16, 2009

Why should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity at my heels surrounds me? (Psalm 49:5)
Jesus, you have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7)

Those who trust in their wealth and boast in the multitude of their riches, (Psalm 49:6)
Father, my boast is of your son Jesus and his cross and resurrection.

None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him– (Psalm 49:7)
Holy Spirit, thank you for the many things that I am unable to do in my own strength, but that I can do with your power.

For the redemption of their souls is costly, and it shall cease forever– (Psalm 49:8 )
Jesus, thank you for paying the cost of my redemption.

That he should continue to live eternally, and not see the Pit. (Psalm 49:9)
For I know that my redeemer lives, and he shall stand at last on the earth; and after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not as a stranger. How my heart yearns within me! (Job 19:25-27)

Psalm 123

December 16, 2009

1 I lift up my eyes to you,
to you whose throne is in heaven.
We praise You, Lord.
2 As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a maid look to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the LORD our God,
till he shows us his mercy.
We thank You for the treasures You have entrusted to us.
3 Have mercy on us, O LORD, have mercy on us,
for we have endured much contempt.
We relinquish our enemies to You.
4 We have endured much ridicule from the proud,
much contempt from the arrogant.
Bless our enemies, Lord, known and unknown.

Dear Heavenly Father,
We take up the sword of the Spirit and cut a trapdoor into the floor of heaven over Nigel’s room at the rehab center. May the angels ascend and descend. We cry out for an invasion of Your glory. Amen.

Trust and Hope

December 15, 2009

“Hope is the ability to hear the music of God’s future. Faith (trust) is the courage to dance to it today.” Bishop William Frey

2 Samuel 6:13-15 (King James Version)
And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings. And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.

Dear Heavenly Father,
King David was wearing a garment of righteousness and engaging in extravagant sacrifice when He brought the ark of the covenant, the seat of mercy, into Jerusalem. When Jesus, Who was in the form of God and took upon Himself the likeness of man, was born in Bethlehem, the angel choirs sang.
You are drawn to sacrifice.
Oh, to hear the music of angel choirs, to dance with all our might in Your presence! Help us to die to self and put on the vestments of righteousness–the love, the humility, and the obedience of Christ Jesus. We put our trust in You.
We proclaim the birth of Your Son with shouts and trumpet sound. Jesus was born in Bethlehem. He died and arose in Jerusalem. He ascended into heaven and is seated at Your right hand. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. Halleluia! Halleluia! Halleluia!

Revelation 3:14-22

December 15, 2009

“And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God:’” (Revelation 3:14)
Jesus, you are the faithful and true witness of your father’s love and will; please help us daily receive your witness into our hearts and minds.

“‘”I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of my mouth.”‘” (Revelation 3:15-16)
Jesus, let the fire of your Holy Spirit run through this diocese. Set on fire all those who have settled into a “comfortable Christianity” which does not challenge them to holiness and obedience to you.

“Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’–and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked–I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.’” (Revelation 3:17-18 )
Father, give us eyes to see our true condition.

“‘”As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.”‘” (Revelation 3:19)
Holy Spirit, help us joyfully embrace Jesus’ discipline.

“‘”Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with me.”‘” (Revelation 3:20)
Holy Spirit, please help us open the door of our hearts to Jesus.

“‘”To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with me on my throne, as I also overcame and sat down with my father on his throne.”‘” (Revelation 3:21)
Jesus, please help us overcome everything that hinders us in running the race.

“‘”He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”‘” (Revelation 3:22)
Father, please give us ears to hear what your Holy Spirit is saying to the churches. Thank you.

Awake! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Arise! Do not cast us off forever. (Psalm 44:23)
Lord Jesus, come and help the afflicted and those who suffer for your name’s sake.

Subject: Update on Fr. Nigel
Monday 12/14/09

Fr. Nigel continues to mend. He is walking, with the help of a walker, the length of the hall outside of his room, which is about 80 feet. He is doing about 3 hours of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy per day, which is exhausting him. He has sustained work-outs for his arms and legs. His mind wants to do more than his body is able to do at this point. When he walked down the hall Saturday, the nausea and the dizziness had subsided somewhat, so keep those prayers coming because that issue is showing signs of healing. Fortunately he has Sundays to recover and rest.
His bed sore continues to be a source of pain and discomfort, but the new bed is a help.
Fr. Nigel said that he has had some “remarkable prayer time”. He has also been able to pray with some of the nurses that are attending to him. They have come up to him and said that they are Christians, and then they have prayed together.
Fr. Nigel has asked for prayer for his concern over a couple of procedures which may take place this week — removal of a port and a procedure on the bed sore.
Please pray for:

*      Healing of his lungs so that he can be weaned from the oxygen

*      Building up strength in his arms and legs so that he can increase his walking

*      Patience and endurance for his PT and OT and for the long road to recovery ahead

*      Elimination of the dizziness and nausea

*      God’s Peace for his mind and spirit as he faces some challenges this week both physically and emotionally

*      Strength, endurance and peace for Lynn as she faces the marathon ahead

Please give Thanks and Praise to our God who is so awesome. He listens to your prayers and is answering them. Fr. Nigel is getting a little better every day. God’s will be done! Thank you Lord Jesus!

A Prayer for Fr. Nigel’s Bedsore

December 13, 2009

Continue to lift up prayer for Father Nigel’s bedsore.

Bedsores form when pressure prevents oxygen from reaching an area of soft tissue — causing cells to die, sometimes at a deep level erupting outward to the skin. During critical care in ICU the choice to preserve life often affects ordinary nursing practice of moving the body frequently, and bedsores can be a result of this choice for Life. A three-month prognosis for the healing of this wound indicates a serious bedsore. The intense pain Fr. Nigel feels (often a 9 or a 10 pain level) indicates that nerves were not damaged.

The best cure comes from the body’s own regenerative power aided by careful nursing practice which promotes unimpeded blood and oxygen flow to the wound by keeping new pressure off the wound through frequent re-positioning of the body. The new bed will help tremendously.

Father Nigel always counsels praying as specifically into a physical healing as possible – targeting, even pinpointing, prayer. Many of you have battled this kind of infirmity and have an intuitive sense of the need. Nevertheless, let all of us concentrate our prayer on asking the Lord to heal this wound.

A Prayer for Healing of the Bedsore

Heavenly Father, we thank You for saving our friend’s life, and we ask now that you send your Holy Spirit’s power to renew and enliven all cells – skin and deep tissue alike – which have been traumatized by pressure during Fr. Nigel’s long stasis in coma. We pray that the healing power of Your Son Jesus may touch and rebuke this small but potent stronghold of pain and infirmity. Protect the wound from any invasion of infection. Repair capillaries which have been damaged and draw fresh blood to the healing wound. We pray for a visible reduction in the size of this bedsore, asking boldly for an astonishing shrinking of the circumference of the wound, of its depth, of any deep tissue involvement and of its pain.

We thank you for the hands which chose life at every juncture of Fr. Nigel’s care in ICU — hands which gave substance to our prayer that You might spare his life. We pray now for the hands which choose healing for broken and traumatized flesh: for the hands that position our friend in bed while he builds up muscular strength in his lower body, that monitor for infection and check progress in healing, and that apply creams and medicine to the wound. May those medicines be salves of salvation in Jesus’ name.

We praise You now, Father, for work begun and for the healing You are working even now in our friend. We lift all our petitions and offer thanks and praise in the name of God — Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, (2 Thessalonians 2:13)
Father, thank you for choosing us for salvation and holiness.

Jesus, thank you for loving us.

Holy Spirit, continue to bring us to sanctification and the love of Jesus.

Lord Jesus Christ, please help us daily answer the call of the gospel so that we may enter into your glory.

Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle. (2 Thessalonians 2:15)

Prayer Table Reports from Schenectady and Lake Luzerne

December 13, 2009

Christ Church Schenectady Prayer Table Report December 12, 9:15-10:15 AM Torre Bissell and Don Foust

+–indicates received wooden cross made by Dennis Adams of North Carolina.

Torre had received the Word, “Pray that people would not make ‘false choices’ “. Near the end of the Prayer Table session, the Word Received came to life when Robert stopped.

Although it was a sunny day, people did not stay long at the Prayer Table today since the temperature was below freezing.

The Prayer Table has become a regular stop for a number of folks in the Neighborhood, and we have added their names to the bottom of the Prayer Table Report.

+Robert– “I’ve got a good body and a good mind; I just need to put them to use.” We prayed for good choices in Robert’s life.

+Travis– We prayed for blessings in his life.

+Dennis–We prayed for protection and provision for Dennis and his family.

+Champaign–This young woman was waiting for the bus to take her to her job at Sears. We prayed for today’s blessings.

+Danny– We prayed for protection from false choices.

Jack– This older gentleman had stopped at the Prayer Table last week. He has difficulty in walking because of his diabetes. Because of the snow on the sidewalks, he was in the street using a walker to travel up State Street. We prayed for healing of his legs.

Jim –regular– “If there is a God, why are there so many homeless people. Why are we sending 30,000 more boys to Afghanistan?” We talked about free will and prayed for our leaders to make good choices.

+D’Andrea– “Pray for my girlfriend Sarah. She is going into the military.” We prayed for safety for Sarah and that relationship would grow during their separation.

+Robert– Robert was walking in the street with his headphones on. When we asked if he wanted prayer, he responded, “What the hell. OK.” When asked what was on his heart, Robert began to cry and said, “Where do I begin?” Robert said he had recently stopped taking drugs because of “bad dreams caused by demons”. He also stopped taking drugs because he was adversely affecting the children around him. Robert recently lost his job and is fearful that he will lose his home. He has served time in prison and is on parole. As we began to pray, tears gushed down Robert’s face as if a faucet had been turned on. We prayed for freedom from fear. Torre wrote down a verse from 2 Timothy 1:7 for Robert to remember: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Robert told us that we will be attending Schenectady County Community College next term to study Hotel and Restaurant Management. We also thanked God for the wise choices Robert has begun make in his life (ending his drug use and his continuing education) and encouraged Robert to attend Church services. Robert said he was raised Catholic. I was quite obvious that Robert was the living example of someone who had made “false choices”. Please pray for Robert. He has the desire to change his life, but he is full of fear.

+Omar and his young son +Ocyrus– We prayed for protection and blessings in their lives.

Prayer Table Regulars

Kayla– Pray for healing in her life after being raped. Pray for her mother Laura, her son Nassir, her brother Josh, and Josh’s son Deanthony.

Jim–Pray for healing in his life from abusive parents and for his personal peace after the death of his 31 year old son Robert.

Bill–Pray for his health and no more epileptic seizures. This middle-aged man has lived alone; please pray for companionship.

Lucinada and Eddiberto–Pray for protection for their family

Paulette and her children Monique and Taishawn–Pray for provision for this family

Clarence–Pray for direction as he seeks to change his life.

Linda–Pray for her family in Guyana

PRAYER TABLE REPORT St. Mary’s of Lake Luzerne
(Sat., Dec. 12, 2009; 11:30 a.m.to 12:30 p.m.; inside the Parish Hall before and during the start of our weekly Community Luncheon; Deacon Alan Hart presiding at His table.)

Note: This was the first time we manned His table indoors; we usually hold it outdoors whatever the weather conditions in front of the Hall entrance. But today I moved indoors not because of the weather but because our rector, Rev. Bruce Mason, is worried that it might be a safety concern because with the snow collecting we only have a small area for cars to pass and it might endanger people stopping for prayer. This is a very legitimate and wise concern. The difference? Fewer people seemed to stop, but … the ones who came REALLY wanted prayer.)

a–Indicated anointed with Holy Oil.
t–indicates received handmade cross made by Dennis Adams of North Carolina.

a,t — PAT (a woman) — She asked for prayer for good health and happiness. She said she is in generally good health but has “a few things wrong.” She did not go into detail and I did not push. She is a Methodist but has not been able to attend her services lately because she works on Sunday. She was very grateful for prayer.

a– JOE — This kind, middle-aged man is a repeat visitor to the Table. He wishes to be reunited with his son, who is 20 years old. He has only seen him twice in the boy’s whole life. Joe also has a bad knee and he winced in pain when he sat down at a chair for prayer. I offered to pray for his knee too, but Joe said “No … just pray for my desire to be reunited with my son. That’s what I REALLY want.”

a– PEGGY — This woman, a member of our church, has problems with her lungs and asked for healing. She has attended Healing Services at our church and she swears that since she started getting healing prayer for her lungs, the illness had been “under control” and not getting worse. We prayed for continued and complete healing.

Balm and Gilead

December 12, 2009

My favorite online Bible is www.biblegateway.com. This morning, I was using the keyword search for ‘balm’ and ‘Gilead,’ thinking I might get inspired for a bedsore prayer for Nigel. In addition to the expected Jeremiah passages, another one showed up:

Jeremiah 8:22
Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people?

Genesis 37:25
As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.

Jeremiah mourns for God’s unrepentant children in Judah in one verse. Joseph’s brothers sell him into slavery in another verse. Fascinating juxtaposition.
God used the act of perfidy of Joseph’s brothers to ultimately be their salvation. Had it not been for the chain of events triggered in Joseph’s life, they would have starved to death.
God sent Jesus to be Judah’s Savior. Joseph’s Egyptian name was Zaphenath-paneah, Savior of the age (Genesis 41:45). Even the camels, spices, and myrrh of the Ishmaelite traders are reminiscent of the Magi. Both salvation stories have inauspicious beginnings. Joseph’s brothers pulled him out of a cistern to be sold, and Jesus was born in a stable.
Do we not have an awesome God?

Dear Heavenly Father,
Dare we despise the day of small beginnings? We thank You for inauspicious beginnings. We thank You that there is no tragedy You cannot redeem. We are grateful that Your thoughts are not our thoughts and Your ways are not our ways. We look to you in glad expectation. We look to You in joy.
We know that You have saved and that You will continue to save. We claim the salvation, the healing, and the love of Your Son Jesus. May He so completely fill our hearts that His light will blaze forth in our lives.
Your eyes run to and fro across the earth looking for those whose hearts are passionate for You. May our hearts be so filled with Jesus that they appear like the lights on a Christmas tree. We want to please You, Lord, to bring You delight!
Don’t pass us by, Lord. Show Yourself strong on our behalf (and on Nigel’s behalf). Take our small beginnings and bless them. Amen.
2 Chronicles 16:9a, Isaiah 55:8, Zechariah 4:10

Revelation 3:1-6

December 12, 2009

“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, ‘These things says he who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.”‘” (Revelation 3:1)
Holy Spirit, restore us to new life in Jesus.

“‘”Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God.”‘” (Revelation 3:2)
Jesus, move our hearts to do the works you have called us to do; bring us to maturity and perfection before you.

“‘”Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.”‘” (Revelation 3:3)
Father, please help us hold fast to the truth of the gospel and turn to you.

“‘”You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white, for they are worthy.”‘” (Revelation 3:4)
Jesus, thank you for those models you have placed among us; help us emulate them and walk in your ways.

“‘”He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before my father and before his angels.”‘” (Revelation 3:5)
Holy Spirit, please help us daily overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil.

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” (Revelation 3:6)
Father, please restore spiritual sight and hearing to the people of this diocese. Thank you.

Update on Fr. Nigel, December 11, 9:41 AM

December 11, 2009

Update on Fr. Nigel,9:41 AM
Friday 12/11/09

Fr. Nigel is improving each day. Wednesday he walked down the hall 35 feet – he was euphoric. Thursday he walked down the hall 80 Feet !! Praise God who listens to our prayers and answers them. After he told me about his walk, he said “Live Man Walking” (a play of words on the title of the movie “Dead Man Walking”) and then he laughed. He is continuing to experience the nausea and dizziness when he stands up, but he is determined to get past it.

His bed sore causes him constant pain and discomfort, but he has a new bed that is made specifically to provide relief for people with bedsores. Thank you Lord for the person who invented this bed.

Fr. Nigel said that he had 3 visions while he was in a coma. He is praying about them and is analyzing them through the Bible and will relate them to all of you in the future.

Please pray for Fr. Nigel for complete healing of his lungs so that he can breathe without needing the extra oxygen; continued strengthening of his muscles; complete healing of his bedsore; healing of whatever is causing his dizziness and nausea.

Please pray for Lynn that she may continue to be strengthened through your prayers.

Praise God for the healing that has taken place in Fr. Nigel, both physically and spiritually. Thank you Lord for listening to your children’s prayers. Thank you all for your constant and steadfast prayers.

Father Nigel Mumford

December 11, 2009

Zechariah 10:12
“I will strengthen them in the LORD and in his name they will walk,” declares the LORD.

Dear Heavenly Father,
We thank You for saving Nigel’s life, for redeeming his soul, and for restoring his health. You are a gracious and mighty God. We give thanks for the Holy Spirit rising up in Nigel’s spirit so that his spirit man walks in Your name. Strengthen him and continue to restore him so that his body will walk in Your holy name.
Holy is Your name, O Lord, and holy is the name of Your Son Jesus! You have exalted Him to the highest place and given him the name that is above every name. At the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. At the name of Jesus, Nigel’s nausea and dizziness should bow! In the name of Jesus, Nigel’s healing will be complete.
Jesus delivers! Jesus heals! Jesus saves!
Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! In the name of Jesus, Nigel will walk. Amen.
