+ Tyheme — young man in his late teens or early 20’s – asked prayer for a “prosperous life” – we prayed both for financial prosperity and spiritual prosperity — that his soul would prosper

+ Lowell — man got off the bus and walked over to the table; Lowell is a believer who has come for prayer and has helped intercede for others before at the prayer table; he has been in Connecticut and just recently returned to Schenectady; we prayed for him and his family; he stayed at the table for the remainder of the hour and helped pray for folks who stopped; he plans to join us for the 9am breakfast Sunday morning and the special Sunday School teaching series on the Holy Spirit

+ Larry — older man, said he would like prayer for his family but he needed to get back to work – we prayed for him and his family, for good health and God’s provision

John 16:33 and 1 Peter 4:7-11

April 17, 2010

“These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
Jesus, please overcome what is worldly in me. Win the victory in me and bring me to good cheer.

But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. (1 Peter 4:7)
Holy Spirit, come and move in my heart as I pray.

And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 4:8 )
Thank you, Lord, that your love and your blood have covered my sins.

Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. (1 Peter 4:9)
Holy Trinity, one God, you have brought us into your fellowship with one another. Father, Son and Holy Spirit, as you have done that for us, help us do that for others. Thank you.

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. (1 Peter 4:10)
Father, please help us daily give and receive ministry to and from others in the body of your son Jesus.

If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. (1 Peter 4:11a)
Holy Spirit, help me speak at your bidding.

If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, (1 Peter 4:11b)
Father, please help me daily use the gifts and talents you have given me for the building up of your kingdom.

to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. (1 Peter 4:11c)
Jesus, please help us daily bring you glory. Have your way with us so that your dominion will be evident in our lives. Thank you.

A word received: Wait on me. Turn your attention to me. Keep me in focus. Don’t be dismayed or distracted by the folly of the world and flesh.

We praise God that Mother Miriam was transferred out of the Cardiac-Pulmonary Surgery Unit to a regular room this afternoon. Her spirits are great and her body is showing signs of solid post-surgical healing. We are all grateful for the prayers of so many caring friends.
Arrangements have been made for the sacraments to be administered during the couple of days remaining to her hospital stay, and we ask her friends, clergy and lay alike, to NOT VISIT her in the hospital. Mother Miriam hopes to master the remaining rehabilitation milestones needed as quickly as possible, to recover as needed for a week or so at the convent, and then be available for visiting.
Pray with us for continued protection for her time in the more public wing of the hospital and for a speedy return to the convent.

John 16:12-15 and Psalm 40:1-2

April 16, 2010

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.” (John 16:12)
Jesus, thank you for your kindness to us: you give us only what we can handle each day. Please give us ears to hear what you are saying and hearts to respond to your words. Thank you.

“However, when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak; and he will tell you things to come.” (John 16:13)
Holy Spirit, please lead us into the truth of the gospel each day. Come upon us today and revive us — fill us anew and guide us. Thank you for what you will be doing in the revival service at St. Michael’s Colonie this evening.

“He will glorify me, for he will take of what is mine and declare it to you.” (John 16:14)
Father, please help us hearken to the words that your Holy Spirit is speaking — help us receive them into our hearts and minds. Thank you.

“All things that the Father has are mine. Therefore I said that he will take of mine and declare it to you.” (John 16:15)
Holy Trinity, one God, please help us enter your life of love and sharing with one another. Thank you

I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined to me, and heard my cry. (Psalm 40:1)
Lord, hear our cry to you for the move of your Spirit among us; give us patient endurance to wait for that move of your Spirit and not cease crying out to you.

He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. (Psalm 40:2)
Holy Spirit, pull us out of the miry clay of discouragement and being content with things as they are in the church — set our feet on Jesus our Rock and help us proclaim his saving work to all the nations.

Update on Sudan

April 15, 2010

To date, I’ve found no reports of violence associated with Sudan’s election. However, the government had restricted the media well before the election. This article discusses the sorry outcome of the process, which strikes me as a charade.
I suppose we have posted more prayers for Sudan than for any nation, except possibly our own. The Holy Spirit has so moved my heart. There is a verse in Revelation:

. . . the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

I’ve wondered if God doesn’t “store” some prayers, to be poured out together at an appointed time. Maybe there is such a bowl for Sudan. All we can do is trust in God, for He is our strength. — JW

Exodus 15:27-16:4 and Psalm 18:28-29

April 15, 2010

Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees; and they encamped there by the water. (Exodus 15:27)
LORD, bring us to a place of Elim springs where the weary may find rest and refreshment. Please let the Diocese of Albany and the Diocese of Down and Dromore be such places for those who are weary. Thank you for the ministries that take place at the Spiritual Life Center and throughout our two dioceses. Bless the meeting for revival that will take place this Friday at St. Michael’s Colonie. Let the river of your Spirit flow there.

They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the Wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt. (Exodus 16:1)
LORD, so many of your people are in the wilderness of sin: direct their footsteps out of the “miry clay” and bring them to the freedom of your Holy Spirit.

And the whole congregation of the people of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, (Exodus 16:2)
Holy Spirit, please help us repent of grumbling against the clergy you have placed over us to guide us on our journey out of Egypt and the land of bondage.

and said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.” (Exodus 16:3)
Father, please help us repent of wanting to satisfy the desires of the flesh by returning to the bondage of sin.

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law or not. (Exodus 16:4)
Jesus, you have given us bread from heaven — your own body and blood — please help us daily walk in your ways. Thank you.

For you will light my lamp; the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. (Psalm 18:28 )
LORD God, help us walk by the light of your word.

For by you I can run against a troop, by my God I can leap over a wall. (Psalm 18:29)
Holy Spirit, please give us strength to run the race that is set before us and help us leap over the walls that divide us from one another. Thank you.

Thursday: 18:21-50; Exodus 16:10-22; 1 Peter 2:11-25; John 15:12-27
Friday: 134, 135; Exodus 16:23-36; 1 Peter 3:13-4:6; John 16:1-15

Subject: Update on Mother Miriam
Alleluias are on our lips this evening. Mother Miriam is up and walking the corridors of the Cardio-Pulmonary Surgical Unit. Her recovery has been slow due to her body’s complicated response to the support technology and medications. She is beginning to come back, though, and was able to whisper this afternoon, “My heart no longer hurts.” Thanks be to God!
Continue to pray for pain control and for healing of the areas affected by the movement of the scope during surgery. Pray also for stabilization of her vascular system and a weaning from blood pressure medications. Most of her negative symptoms are ancillary to the post-surgical pain, so focus on release from this pain.
God bless you all for your faithfulness in prayer!

      St. Patrick’s Breastplate
1. I bind unto myself today
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same
The Three in One and One in Three.
2. I bind this day to me forever
By power of faith, Christ’s incarnation;
His baptism in Jordan river,
His death on Cross for my salvation;
His bursting from the spicèd tomb,
His riding up the heavenly way,
His coming at the day of doom
I bind unto myself today.
3. I bind unto myself the power
Of the great love of cherubim;
The sweet ‘Well done’ in judgment hour,
The service of the seraphim,
Confessors’ faith, Apostles’ word,
The Patriarchs’ prayers, the prophets’ scrolls,
All good deeds done unto the Lord
And purity of virgin souls.
4. I bind unto myself today
The virtues of the star lit heaven,
The glorious sun’s life giving ray,
The whiteness of the moon at even,
The flashing of the lightning free,
The whirling wind’s tempestuous shocks,
The stable earth, the deep salt sea
Around the old eternal rocks.
5. I bind unto myself today
The power of God to hold and lead,
His eye to watch, His might to stay,
His ear to hearken to my need.
The wisdom of my God to teach,
His hand to guide, His shield to ward;
The word of God to give me speech,
His heavenly host to be my guard.
6. Against the demon snares of sin,
The vice that gives temptation force,
The natural lusts that war within,
The hostile men that mar my course;
Or few or many, far or nigh,
In every place and in all hours,
Against their fierce hostility
I bind to me these holy powers.
7. Against all Satan’s spells and wiles,
Against false words of heresy,
Against the knowledge that defiles,
Against the heart’s idolatry,
Against the wizard’s evil craft,
Against the death wound and the burning,
The choking wave, the poisoned shaft,
Protect me, Christ, till Thy returning.
8. Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.
9. I bind unto myself the Name,
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.
By Whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
Praise to the Lord of my salvation,
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

Fourth Global South to South Encounter

April 15, 2010

One of our readers, Sybil, posted this powerful prayer in a comment thread.

Holy Father,
Please prepare all who convene in Your Holy Name in Singapore. Please cut and expose all entanglements and influences of unscriptural agendas and make them completely pure instruments of Your will. In the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

John 15:1-11

April 14, 2010

“I am the true vine, and my father is the vinedresser.” (John 15:1)
Father, thank you for your care for us.

“Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away; and every branch that bears fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.” (John 15:2)
“      Father, help us by your Holy Spirit to let go of all the unfruitful parts of our lives. Help us daily submit to your pruning so that we may bear more fruit for you.

“You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.” (John 15:3)
Holy Spirit, thank you for the cleansing fire of Jesus’ words that you cause to burn in our hearts.

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” (John 15:4)
Jesus, in your mercy please graft back into the vine those who have fallen away and have ceased to bear fruit for the kingdom. Call them back to you; help them heed your call.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)
Jesus, please help us remember that we are merely branches, that you are the vine. Help us daily abide in you so that we may bear fruit for you. Come, dwell in our hearts. Dwell in my heart, Lord Jesus.

“If anyone does not abide in me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.” (John 15:6)
Lord, we cry out to you for all those who have been seduced by the empty philosophies of the world: help them come back to you.

“If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” (John 15:7)
Holy Spirit, please help us so abide in Jesus that our desires and prayers line up with his. Let his word abide in us and guide us each day.

“By this my father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be my disciples.” (John 15:8 )
Father, help the fruit of our lives bring you glory.

“As the father loved me, I also have loved you; abide in my love.” (John 15:9)
Father, thank you for loving us, for loving me. Please help us abide in your love and rest in your arms throughout the day.

“If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my father’s commandments and abide in his love.” (John 15:10)
Holy Spirit, please help us keep Jesus’ commandments.

“These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.” (John 15:11)
Father, bring us to the fullness of Jesus’ joy.

A word received: Look to me: I AM your strength and your redeemer.

Congolese bishop assaulted

April 14, 2010

From ENS and ACNS
A group of unidentified gunmen forced their way into the home of Congolese Bishop Sylvestre Bali-Busane Bahati of the Diocese of Bukavu during the early hours of April 9, looting the property and leaving with money, clothes and electronic equipment. A Congolese priest said, “We also request our brothers and sisters who read this sad news to pray for Bishop Bahati’s family and the Diocese of Bukavu who are often victims of atrocities from the militias.”

Lord Jesus Christ,
Your blood was shed for the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. We cry out for healing to begin deep within the land. We cry out for Your blood to cover the blood of the millions killed in civil war. We cry out for Your kingdom to come and Your will to be done in Congo, particularly the diocese of Bukavu. May Your holy angels encamp around Bishop Bahati and his family to guard and protect them. Amen.

This great dragon—the ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world—was thrown down to the earth with all his angels.

1 John 5:19 (New Living Translation)
We know that we are children of God and that the world around us is under the control of the evil one.

Dear Heavenly Father,
Satan is attempting to subvert what You have created. Through our own sins and the sins of our ancestors, we have given him access to that portion of the body of Christ within the Anglican Communion.
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
We give thanks for Your servants attending the South to South Encounter.  They have been crucified with Christ.  They live by faith in the Son of God, who loved them and gave Himself for them.  Let nothing be done in this meeting through selfish ambition or conceit.  They are Christ’s and have crucified their passions and desires.  May they glory in nothing save the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.
May they seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness.  Release them from anything in the present order of  the Anglican Communion that is controlled by Satan.  Guard them from shrinking back from Your high call.  Help them to persevere in doing Your will and establishing Your kingdom within the Anglican Communion.   Amen.
