Prayers for travellers

May 21, 2010

From Catholic Online:

O Almighty and merciful God, who hast commissioned Thy angels to guide and protect us, command them to be our assiduous companions from our setting out until our return; to clothe us with their invisible protection; to keep from us all danger of collision, of fire, of explosion, of fall and bruises, and finally, having preserved us from all evil, and especially from sin, to guide us to our heavenly home. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

O God, Who did cause the children of Israel to traverse the Red Sea dryshod; Thou Who did point out by a star to the Magi the road that led them to Thee; grant us we beseech Thee, a prosperous journey and propitious weather; so that, under the guidance of Thy holy angels we may safely reach that journey’s end, and later the haven of eternal salvation.
Hear, O Lord, the prayers of Thy servants. Bless their journeyings. Thou Who art everywhere present, shower everywhere upon them the effects of Thy mercy; so that, insured by Thy protection against all dangers, they may return to offer Thee their thanksgiving. Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Matthew 9:9-13

May 21, 2010

As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And he said to him, “Follow me.” So he arose and followed him. (Matthew 9:9)
Jesus, thank you for making my life a daily adventure by following you. Thank you for asking me to follow you. Please give me steady footsteps as I do this.

Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. (Matthew 9:10)
Jesus, please let our home be a haven of peace and blessing for all who come here.

And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” (Matthew 9:11)
Father, please help us keep our home as a place of welcome to the lost and the least.

When Jesus heard that, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” (Matthew 9:12-13)
Holy Spirit, thank you for helping us answer Jesus’ call.

Thank you, Father, for giving me Jean as my wife to help me each day answer Jesus’ call. Thank you for the blessing of these 46 years!

Friday: 107:1-32; Jeremiah 31:27-34; Ephesians 5:1-20; Matthew 9:9-17

Our nation

May 20, 2010

Psalm 34:15
The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.

O Lord,
We thank You for the promises of Holy Scripture. Raise up intercessors throughout our nation. Protect President Obama from physical and spiritual harm. We pray for Your kingdom to come and Your will to be done in the United States as it is in heaven. Amen.

Matthew 9:1-8 and Exodus 17:8-13

May 20, 2010

So he got into a boat, crossed over, and came to his own city. (Matthew 9:1)
Jesus, please come to this city and make it your own.

Then behold, they brought to him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.” (Matthew 9:2)
Jesus, come and meet all those who are paralyzed in body or in spirit. Help them hear your words of mercy: “Your sins are forgiven you.”

And at once some of the scribes said within themselves, “This man blasphemes!” (Matthew 9:3)
Father, help all those who minister in the power of your Spirit so that they are not deterred by such criticism.

But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?” (Matthew 9:4)
Holy Spirit, search our hearts and help us repent of thinking evil of others. Help us truly leave judgment in Jesus’ hands.

“For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’”? (Matthew 9:5)
Father, give us faith to move mountains: mountains of sin and illness. Help us use the faith we have.

But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”–then he said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” (Matthew 9:6)
Jesus, please speak your word of forgiveness and healing throughout this diocese; speak your word to us today. Thank you.

And he arose and departed to his house. Now when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such power to men. (Matthew 9:7-8 )
Holy Spirit, please help us use the power you give us to build up the kingdom of God and the Body of Christ. Help us always point to Jesus and not to ourselves. Thank you.

Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.” So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. (Exodus 17:8-13)

A word received for clergy: I appointed Aaron and Hur. I called them. Look for those I have called to support you.

Genetic healing, part 5

May 19, 2010

Romans 7:23 (Amplified Bible)
But I discern in my bodily members [in the sensitive appetites and wills of the flesh] a different law (rule of action) at war against the law of my mind (my reason) and making me a prisoner to the law of sin that dwells in my bodily organs [in the sensitive appetites and wills of the flesh].

I’ve been wondering how the human genome in the Garden of Eden, before the fall, might have differed from today’s. Indeed, I’ve been wondering if Satan hasn’t exerted much of his influence through our DNA.
I’ve read that scientists have no explanation for or knowledge of the use of over 50 per cent of our DNA. This is a much higher percentage than most other organisms.
Of course, within the genetic information for which we do have knowledge, scientists have found many mutations and abnormal cross-linkages.
Jesus is our model of DNA perfection. He could see what His Father did and hear what His Father said. Is that what the unused DNA is for? I don’t know.

Dear Father,
We want to worship You with our whole being. We want every codon, every chemical cascade, every neural transmitter to reflect Your glory.
Bless the Lord, O my soul. Bless the Lord, genetic codons. Bless the Lord, chemical cascades. Bless the Lord, neural transmitters. Bless His holy name!

Beyond the edge of white:
Radiant rainbow, Holy Light,
Spectral wavelengths sparkling bright.
Synaptic-discharge-dazzle dance,
Strengthening sustentacular stance,
Creative catechol-romance.
Transforming fire: Yahweh.
Luminous imprint, soul-bound ray:
Freedom’s bounty to display.

Free us to worship You more fully, Lord. Amen.

Genetic healing: part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4.

Ephesians 4:1-6

May 19, 2010

I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, (Ephesians 4:1)
Lord Jesus, please help us answer your call; help us walk in a manner worthy of the children of God.

with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, (Ephesians 4:2)
Jesus, help us have the same mind that you had: you came in humility to serve and to save.

endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4:3)
Holy Spirit, please help us strive to do this at the Diocesan Convention and in all activities throughout the diocese.

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; (Ephesians 4:4)
Father, please help us be a people of hope who maintain the unity of the body of Jesus Christ you son.

one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. (Ephesians 4:5-6)
Father, please enter into all our lives by your Holy Spirit and help us proclaim the faith we have in Jesus. Thank you.

A word received: Pray for my little ones. I AM calling my people to pray for the lost and the least. The prayer table is a visible sign of my love for the lost and the least.

A word received: Yes, you are in my care. Keep looking to me to provide.

Jerusalem

May 18, 2010

Isaiah 62:1, 6, 7 (New International Version)
For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain quiet, till her righteousness shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch. I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest, and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth.

O Lord,
We pray for an open heaven over Jerusalem. May Your holy radiance bathe this land and Your revelation fill the hearts of Your people. Commission Your angels to ascend and descend, we pray. Amen.

Psalm 89:24-29

May 17, 2010

“But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him, and in my name his horn shall be exalted.” (Psalm 89:24)
Father, thank you for your faithfulness and mercy.

“Also I will set his hand over the sea, and his right hand over the rivers.” (Psalm 89:25)
Father, thank you for the authority and dominion you have given your son Jesus.

Jesus, have dominion over our hearts and minds.

“He shall cry to me, ‘You are my father, My God, and the rock of my salvation.’” (Psalm 89:26)
Holy Spirit, please help each of us make that same cry: “You are my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.”

“Also I will make him my firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.” (Psalm 89:27)
Jesus, come and be exalted in our hearts and minds.

“My mercy I will keep for him forever, and my covenant shall stand firm with him.” (Psalm 89:28 )
Father, form us as a covenant people.

“His seed also I will make to endure forever, and his throne as the days of heaven.” (Psalm 89:29)

The quickening Spirit

May 16, 2010

Romans 8:11 (21st Century King James Version)
But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Father, You are the source of our life. We thank You for Your quickening, healing, life-giving Spirit. Help us to grow more and more into the image of Your Son. How precious are Your promises! Amen.
Romans 8, 2 Peter 1:3-4

John 17:20-24

May 16, 2010

“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in me through their word;” (John 17:20)
Jesus, we join you in praying for all those who will believe in you because of our word.

“that they all may be one, as you, Father, are in me, and I in you; that they also may be one in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.” (John 17:21)
Holy Spirit, please help us find our unity in the unity that Jesus has with his father. Please let that unity sine forth at the Diocesan Convention.

“And the glory which you gave me I have given them, that they may be one just as we are one:” (John 17:22)
Holy Father, let the glory you gave Jesus shine forth in our lives, our parishes, and throughout this diocese. We pray that glory and that unity will draw many to belief in Jesus.

“I in them, and you in me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that you have sent me, and have loved them as you have loved me. Father, I desire that they also whom you gave me may be with me where I am, that they may behold my glory which you have given me; for you loved me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17:23-24)
Holy Trinity, one God, let your love for one another shine forth in our lives.

A word received: Hear me; listen to me. I AM calling, are you listening?

A word received: Call my people to me.
Call them to a renewed life of prayer.
Pray that they will be drawn to my Scriptures.
Pray for my new life to be shown forth in them.

Graduation invocation

May 15, 2010

Two years ago, my husband, Rev. George F. Woodliff III, delivered this invocation at our daughter’s high school graduation. I posted it on Lent & Beyond, and it has remained our single most frequently read prayer. On Googling “graduation invocation,” it is at the top of the list! Pray for those students you know who are graduating.
Those who wish to use this invocation as written have permission to do so.

Father, we invite and invoke Your divine presence at this graduation ceremony and to be with these graduates.
We ask that from this day forward You help them to remember Your Son Jesus and His words:
–As they walk out the door of _____ and through other doors in their lives, help them to remember that Jesus said, “I am the door.”
–As they seek enlightenment through greater knowledge, help them to remember that Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.”
–As they seek their path through life and are tempted by many distractions, help them to remember that Jesus said, “I am the way.”
–As they seek to understand the deeper and ultimate meaning of their lives, help them to remember that Jesus said, “I am the truth.”
–As they seek fulfillment and the pursuit of happiness, help them to remember that Jesus said, “I am the life–abundant and eternal life.”

Father, watch over them, protect them, provide for them, guard them, guide them, and give them Your grace to enable them to persevere to the end. In Jesus’s name. Amen.

Ephesians 2:17-22

May 15, 2010

And he came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. (Ephesians 2:17)
Jesus, thank you for coming to us with your message of peace. Please bring that message of peace to all in the Diocese of Albany and the Diocese of Down and Dromore.

For through him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. (Ephesians 2:18 )
Holy Spirit, move in our hearts, cleanse them, and bless our access to the Father through the intercession of Jesus.

Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, (Ephesians 2:19)
Father, please help us live into our citizenship in your kingdom and help us have compassion on all other members of your household. Thank you.

having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone, (Ephesians 2:20)
Jesus, please help us at the Diocesan Convention to renew our commitment to building up your church on the foundation of apostolic teaching and your word in the Scriptures with you as the chief cornerstone.

in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, (Ephesians 2:21)
Lord, please help all the members of your body in this diocese find their proper place in the temple. Help us grow into a holy temple in you.

in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. (Ephesians 2:22)
Father, we want to be your dwelling place; please build us up in your Holy Spirit. Thank you.
