Weakness

June 20, 2010

My husband, Rev. George Woodliff III, has undergone four of a scheduled twelve sessions of chemotherapy, and his weakness is profound. Lent & Beyond has also been praying for Rev. Nigel Mumford, leader of the healing prayer ministry in the diocese of Albany, who has weakness as a result of severe pneumonia last fall.–JW

Isaiah 61:1a,3 (Young’s Literal Translation)
The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah [is] on me . . . To appoint to mourners in Zion, To give to them beauty instead of ashes, The oil of joy instead of mourning, A covering of praise for a spirit of weakness, And He is calling to them, `Trees of righteousness, The planting of Jehovah — to be beautified.’

Lord Jehovah,
We ask You for garments of praise over George and Nigel. Surround them with the sounds of heaven. Commission Your holy angels to fill the atmosphere over each man with hundreds of songs, with the sounds of the harp, cymbals, tambourines, and bagpipes. Weave a tapestry of ancient chants and modern choruses, hymns of joy and peace.
Ring out, ‘Hosanna!’ Resound, ‘Glory to God!’ Bind this spirit of weakness with chains and fetters of iron. ‘Hallelujah to God in the highest! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!’
Jehovah Lord, anoint George and Nigel with Your strength, Your beauty, Your joy that they may be oaks of righteousness whose leaves do not wither, bearing spiritual fruit, and prospering Your kingdom on earth. Amen.
Psalm 1, 149

Prayer Table Report

June 19, 2010

Christ Church Schenectady Prayer Table Report, June 19, 2010, 9:20 -10:45 A.M. Torre Bissell & Randy Pike (from Chatam, NY). There was an unusual level of response to the prayer table this morning. As soon as we set up the table and chairs there were three people there for prayer. We didn’t even have a sign on the table. A few times we had more than one person at the table with Randy praying on one side and I on the other.

Psalm 136 (New International Version), selected verses:

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
2 Give thanks to the God of gods.
His love endures forever.
3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords:
His love endures forever.
4 to him who alone does great wonders,
His love endures forever.
5 who by his understanding made the heavens,
His love endures forever.
6 who spread out the earth upon the waters,
His love endures forever.
7 who made the great lights—
His love endures forever.
8 the sun to govern the day,
His love endures forever.
9 the moon and stars to govern the night;
His love endures forever.
16 to him who led his people through the desert,
His love endures forever.

O God of gods and Lord of lords,
Your mercy endures forever. What a gracious God You are.
Our sin has brought us into the wilderness. Go before us and shield us by day. May Your Spirit hover over us and enlighten our spirits by night.
Hallelujah to the King of kings!
You created space and energy and sound. Fill the air around us with the heavenly cadence of angel wings, the swish and swoosh of neverending praise.
Hallelujah to the King of kings!
You aligned the nebulae, stars, and planets in outer space. Christ is our Light. Bring our wayward spirits, souls, and bodies into Your perfect alignment that Christ may govern us and we may reflect His light.
Hallelujah to the King of kings! Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!

Numbers 13:31-14:25

June 19, 2010

But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.” (Numbers 13:31)
LORD, that is true: if we depend on our own strength we will not be able to do what you have asked of us. However, with your strength, your Holy Spirit, working in us we can do all things for you.

And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature.” (Numbers 13:32)
Bring to repentance, Jesus, all those who give a bad report of your kingdom because they cannot live it in their own strength.

“There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” (Numbers 13:33)
Father, there are giants that we will be asked to subdue, but with the guidance and power of your Holy Spirit we can be like David and defeat them.

So all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people wept that night. (Numbers 14:1)
LORD, your people have been led to believe a lie: that living in your kingdom and doing things your way is not possible. Help us each day find your grace and strength to follow you.

And all the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, “If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness!” (Numbers 14:2)
Jesus, so many of the leaders and teachers and people of the Episcopal Church have “gone back to Egypt” — they have embraced the ways of the world rather than your ways

“Why has the Lord brought us to this land to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should become victims? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?” (Numbers 14:3)
Holy Spirit, protect us from the lies of the world.

So they said to one another, “Let us select a leader and return to Egypt.” (Numbers 14:4)
Jesus, the Episcopal Church has selected leaders who are leading us back to Egypt — have mercy on us.

Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel. (Numbers 14:5)
Father, thank you for those faithful leaders who have never lost sight of your purposes.

But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes;and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: “The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, ‘a land which flows with milk and honey.’ Only do not rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them.” (Numbers 14:6-9)
Jesus, your kingdom is good and your Holy Spirit is able to fill us and renew us for the task ahead. Only don’t let us rebel against your purposes.

And all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Now the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of meeting before all the children of Israel. (Numbers 14:10)
Father, manifest your glory among us and call us back to you and your purposes.

Then the Lord said to Moses: “How long will these people reject Me? And how long will they not believe Me, with all the signs which I have performed among them?” (Numbers 14:11)
LORD, when you show us your ways, help us respond to you.

“I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.” And Moses said to the Lord: “Then the Egyptians will hear it, for by Your might You brought these people up from among them, and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, Lord, are among these people; that You, Lord, are seen face to face and Your cloud stands above them, and You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. Now if You kill these people as one man, then the nations which have heard of Your fame will speak, saying, ‘Because the Lord was not able to bring this people to the land which He swore to give them, therefore He killed them in the wilderness.’ And now, I pray, let the power of my Lord be great, just as You have spoken, saying, ‘The Lord is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.’ Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.” Then the Lord said: “I have pardoned, according to your word; but truly, as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord–” (Numbers 14:12-21)
Holy Spirit, raise up intercessors like Moses among us who will stand in the gap and plead for your people. Thank you.

“because all these men who have seen My glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have put Me to the test now these ten times, and have not heeded My voice, they certainly shall not see the land of which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who rejected Me see it. But My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it. Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valley; tomorrow turn and move out into the wilderness by the Way of the Red Sea.” (Numbers 14:22-25
LORD, help us see the cost of our rebellion against you.

A word received: Seek my face. Seek me out. Seek my faithful presence in your life.

Psalm 91:1-6

June 18, 2010

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. (Psalm 91:1)
Jesus, please help me dwell in those secret places where you commune with your father and the Holy Spirit. Help me “come apart” with you.

I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in him I will trust.” (Psalm 91:2)
Father, you are where I want to be: wrapped in your arms of love. I want to abide under the shadow of your wings.

Surely he shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. (Psalm 91:3)
Jesus, thank you for your ministry of deliverance and for setting me free. Please continue to protect me and my family from every snare of the evil one.

He shall cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you shall take refuge; his truth shall be your shield and buckler. (Psalm 91:4)
Holy Spirit, cover me and guide me into your refuge and shelter. Help me abide in the sheltering arms of Jesus. Thank you.

You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, (Psalm 91:5)
Father, you have not given me a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Thank you. (See 2 Timothy 1:7)

Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. (Psalm 91:6)
Jesus, please help us be vigorous, sturdy, and fruitful in old age.

Energy sources and use

June 17, 2010

Deuteronomy 29:29 (New International Version)
The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.

Dear Heavenly Father,
Your people perish for lack of knowledge. Yet, Your Son Jesus taught us that it is Your pleasure to give Your children good gifts–God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions.
Your children consume fuel throughout the economic sectors of the United States. Teach them how to conserve the good gifts You have granted them.
Some of Your children work as scientists. Look with favor upon them and reveal to them new ideas, concepts, and inventions. Through these revelations, release new sources of energy and new ways to enhance existing sources. Release new ways to be efficient in the use of energy. Bless those who fear You and keep Your commandments.
You are omniscient and omnipotent, extravagant in Your generosity. With You, all things are possible. We ask these things for the establishment of Your kingdom on earth and the glory of Your name. Amen.
Psalm 112:1-3, Proverbs 29:18, Luke 12:31-33

Matthew 18:10-14 and Psalm 81:13-14

June 17, 2010

“Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 18:10)
Have mercy on us, Jesus, when we are angry about children making noise in church; help us to be thankful they are there and help us bless their parents.

“For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.” (Matthew 18:11)
Jesus, help us cooperate with you in your work of salvation: help us bring the lost and the least to you.

“What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying?” (Matthew 18:12)
Holy Spirit, please give us shepherds’ hearts to go out after the lost and the least.

“And if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.” (Matthew 18:13)
Father, there are two lost sheep out there that I have in my heart — please bring them back with rejoicing.

“Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.” (Matthew 18:14)
Father, it is your will that they be saved — thank you. I know you are waiting for us to do our part in prayer and searching out the lost: help us by your Holy Spirit to do that good work with you.

“If my people would but listen to me, if Israel would follow my ways, how quickly would I subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes!” (Psalm 81:13-14)

A word received: I AM waiting.

***** ‘The Dock Walk’ at Titanic Tuesday 15 June 2010

Rev Chris Bennett blogs about, ‘The Dock Walk’, a fresh experiment in church at the Titanic Quarter.. http://www.thedockchurch.org/.
The Dock has been described as the church with no congregation, no building and no money. Nothing daunted, I’m going to suggest that we just go right ahead and do church anyway. And this is my idea:

Last Sunday we held the second Dock Prayer Walk in blazing sunshine in the midst of the Titanic Maritime Heritage Weekend. This meant that we got to pray (for a boat) on a boat, pray for vision in the midst of the Drawing Offices (where the vision for Titanic, Olympic and Britannic took shape)… using the surroundings and environment of the TQ to inspire and inform our prayers. I absolutely loved it – and big thanks to the faithful fellow prayer walkers.

So I got to thinking – if the experience of being out in the open air – walking, chatting, meeting great people, taking in the sights and sounds of the Titanic Quarter – can transform a prayer meeting – why not apply the same experience to a ‘church service’? In other words, would it be possible to incorporate worship, teaching, prayer, inspiration, silence, fellowship – all the things we look for in an hour on a Sunday – into a walk, from one cup of coffee to another, through the TQ? Obviously, some of those things are going to look very different on a walk than they do in a church building; for example, rather than singing hymns, my idea is to listen to some worship music while looking out to sea and reflecting on God’s majesty. For teaching, you won’t be subjected to a full sermon, but we will listen to some Bible passages and reflections – and then maybe chat about our reactions to them as we walk along.

And credit where it’s due: for the genesis of the idea, can I introduce you to Rick, Sally and Tammy; they are the fine team of people who make your panini at the Pump House Cafe. A few weeks ago, Sally introduced me to a friend as “Chris, the minister of the Walking Church”… I hadn’t ever used that phrase to describe myself and I’m really interested (and flattered!) that her observations of me wandering around, chatting to people and sharing lots of cups of coffee merited the title ‘Minister of the Walking Church’! And the more I reflected on the title and the idea behind it, I thought ‘Why not?’

I should emphasise that this is a complete experiment. I don’t know exactly what it will look like and I’m very happy to adapt and react week-by-week as we discover what works and what doesn’t. But I have to say that I’m really excited by the concept, I’m really looking forward to giving it a go, and I’m really grateful that I get the chance to try these mad ideas…

So that’s the idea (or the germ of it anyway) – and it is called…. THE DOCK WALK

The details are:
*      When: every Sunday in June at 3:33pm (easy to remember!)
*      Where: meet at The Streat in the Odyssey to start with coffee
*      Who: anyone and everyone who is willing to try something a bit experimental
*      Why: because God is worthy of worship – even when we don’t have an organ and choir. (or, indeed, pretty much anything).

Prayer Table Report

June 17, 2010

Christ Church Schenectady Prayer Table Report, June 12, 9:30 ¬ 10:30 am, Chuck and Theresa Rinaldo

It was raining as we set up the prayer table. We waited for someone to come along for prayer. Many people were walking from place to place in the rain. This is normal for them as most don’t have transportation. We agreed we needed to be there regardless of the weather and that the Lord would bring those who needed prayer. Many quickly passed by, but because of the rain didn’t stop.

+–indicates received wooden cross made by Dennis Adams of North Carolina

1. Man walking with a cane across the street, waved and said hello. We asked that God bless him and that he meet his needs, and to heal him however he needed to be healed.

2. +James asked for wisdom and guidance. Since his pastor died, he has been seeking a church but has felt unsatisfied. We invited him to CC. We prayed that the Spirit of the Lord would meet him at the front steps of wherever he chose to go.

3. Woman passed on her way to work and asked for a dry day.

4. +Tahim, a young man, asked for his friends to forgive and to change.

5. Just as we were breaking down the table, Bill, an older man who regularly stops for prayer asked us to pray for good health.

Hebrews 8:8b-12

June 16, 2010

“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah–” (Hebrews 8:8b)
Father, write your new covenant on our hearts; establish our daily lives as a covenant people.

“not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in my covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord.” (Hebrews 8:9)
Jesus, lead us by your hand.

“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” (Hebrews 8:10)
Holy Spirit, do this work in our minds and on our hearts — help us be your covenant people.

“None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them.” (Hebrews 8:11)
Father, we are not there yet: please give us teachable hearts and minds and lead us into your land of promise.

“For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” (Hebrews 8:12)
Come soon, Lord Jesus, and write these your laws on our hearts.

      A word received: Remember me.

A word received: Don’t be afraid; keep turning to me.

Executive Council

June 16, 2010

The Executive Council of the Episcopal Church commences a three day meeting today. The meeting will take place at the Maritime Institute in Linthicum Heights, just outside of Baltimore, Maryland. In the wake of recent disciplinary actions against TEC, it could be a pivotal meeting. The roster may be found here.

Dear Heavenly Father,
We lean on You and not on our own understanding. In You there is no darkness at all. We lift Katharine, Bonnie, Gregory, David, Timothy, Hisako, Sarah, Jon, Stephanie, Brian, Jane, Lee, Blanca, Scott, Floyd, Marth, Bruce, Anita, Wendell, Delbert, Joyce, Bettye Jo, Mark, Angela, Mark, Stephen, Gay, Bryan, Lelanda, Cristobal, Vycke, Francisco, Silvestre, Katie, Rosalie, James, Terry, Deborah, Winnie, Anne, Sandye, David, Sally, Kurt, Marion, Linda, and Dorothy into Your presence. Your will be done at this Executive Council meeting as it is being done in heaven. Into Your hands, O Lord, we commit the Episcopal Church. We thank You for Your healing light that is shining upon the church at this time. Amen.

Thanksgiving

June 15, 2010

Yesterday was an interesting day. I ran across the World Magazine article about the Congressional Prayer Caucus. In the article, Mississippi was the first state to form a legislative prayer caucus. In the Anglican blogosphere, I ran across unconfirmed reports that further discipline has been meted out to TEC for its actions.
I am a member of a loose knit organization that prays for the state of Mississippi. Some members pray in the galleys while the legislature is in session–no lobbying, just praying. Did the years of prayers of those Mississippi intercessors spiritually help set the stage for the unanimous formation of the legislative prayer caucus?
Lent & Beyond has fervently prayed for the Anglican Communion and the Episcopal Church and for our nation. I thank God for these developments. I thank God that He listens to our prayers. I thank God for the prayers He has answered, is answering, and will answer. I thank God for His tender mercies.–JW

Psalm 33:18-22 (New International Version)
But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you.

Numbers 11:16-18a and Ezekiel 34:17-24

June 15, 2010

So the Lord said to Moses: “Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; bring them to the tabernacle of meeting, that they may stand there with you.” (Numbers 11:16)
Holy Spirit, please help us recognize those who are already doing ministry and raise them up to leadership positions in the church.

“Then I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone.” (Numbers 11:17)
Jesus, please come down and talk with Bishop Bill. Take of your Holy Spirit and put Him in the hearts and minds of the clergy and lay leaders of this diocese, that they may truly bear the burden of leadership with Bishop Bill.

“Then you shall say to the people, ‘Consecrate yourselves…’” (Numbers 11:18a)
Father, please help us hear the call to consecrate ourselves to your service.

‘And as for you, O my flock, thus says the Lord GOD: “Behold, I shall judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and goats. Is it too little for you to have eaten up the good pasture, that you must tread down with your feet the residue of your pasture–and to have drunk of the clear waters, that you must foul the residue with your feet? And as for my flock, they eat what you have trampled with your feet, and they drink what you have fouled with your feet.” ‘Therefore thus says the Lord GOD to them: “Behold, I myself will judge between the fat and the lean sheep. Because you have pushed with side and shoulder, butted all the weak ones with your horns, and scattered them abroad, therefore I will save my flock, and they shall no longer be a prey; and I will judge between sheep and sheep. I will establish one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them–my servant David. He shall feed them and be their shepherd. And I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I, the Lord, have spoken. (Ezekiel 34:17-24)
Father, thank you for the faithful shepherds you have raised up in this diocese. Thank you that you have raised up your son Jesus to shepherd and guide us. We ask you to make him prince over us and all we do, and help us hear the word you are speaking to us. Feed us with your word.

A word received: I AM the living bread.
      I AM the living water.
Look to me and I will refresh you.

A word received 6/4/2009: Pray for this nation.
Pray for wise and godly men and women who will lead my people in my ways.
Pray for the courts, that they will do true justice.
Pray for the Congress and the legislatures, that they will have a spirit of wisdom and discernment.
Pray for the President and the Governors, that their hearts will be turned into my ways.

A word received 6/25/2009: Pray for the President.
Pray for my work in his heart and mind.
Pray for wise and godly counselors for him.
Pray for wisdom in the storm.
Pray that he will look to me rather than opinion polls.
Pray for my word to lodge in his heart.

Blessing from the Anglican Christian community in Ceylon, Pakistan, and India”
May the Name of Jesus, the Son of God, who is mightier than all the hosts of Satan, and more glorious than all the angels of heaven, abide with you in your going out and your coming in; by day and by night; at morning and at evening; at all times and in all places.
May the Name of Jesus, the Son of God, protect and deliver you from the wrath of evil persons; from the assaults of evil spirits; from foes invisible; from the snares of the Evil One; and from all low passions that beguile the soul and body.
May the Name of Jesus protect and deliver you.

***** Please pray for Carrol Gomez (wife of Archbishop Drexel Gomez). Mrs. Gomez had a stroke in 2006 and largely lost the use of her right hand. She said there was some improvement after prayer for healing Saturday evening at the Diocesan Convention.

Congressional Prayer Caucus

June 15, 2010

Article from World Magazine. The website of the Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation is here.

Lord, we thank You for Your protective hand that has shielded our nation. We thank You for the freedom of religion. Thank You for hearing the prayers of Your people on behalf of this nation, especially the Congressional Prayer Caucus.
We ask You to give the Caucus divine protection and supernatural wisdom. Guard them from temptations. Bless Rep. Randy Forbes and his effort to build a nationwide network of legislators to fight against attacks on religion in public life.
In You we trust, Lord. Amen.
