From the Preamble to the state constitution:
We, the People of the State of California, grateful to Almighty God for our freedom, in order to secure and perpetuate its blessings, do establish this Constitution.
In 1959 an attempt had been made to establish “In God we Trust” as the state motto; however, in 1963 Eureka (I have found it!) was chosen instead.
Almighty God,
We stand with the people of California and affirm that we are grateful to You for their freedom. We declare with them: In God we Trust! We proclaim these words over the state. May they ring out loud and clear. Amen.
