Having eyes, do you not see?

October 7, 2010

The inspiration for this prayer came from a book on the biblical foundation of discernment of spirits, The School of the Seers, by Jonathan Welton.

Luke 4:18 (New King James Version)
The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me . . .
To proclaim . . . recovery of sight to the blind,

Matthew 7:3 (New King James Version)
And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?

1 John 2:9 (New King James Version)
He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now.

Revelation 3:18 (New King James Version)
I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.

Ephesians 1:17-18 (New King James Version)
. . . that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

Hebrews 5:14 (New King James Version)
But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

2 Kings 6:17 (New King James Version)
And Elisha prayed, and said, “LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

OPEN THE EYES OF MY SPIRIT, LORD. REMOVE THE SPECKS AND PLANKS–THE HATRED, DOUBT, PRIDE, AND HYPOCRISY–THAT I MAY BE WISE, DISCERNING BOTH GOOD AND EVIL, AND KNOW THE HOPE OF YOUR CALLING AND THE RICHES OF YOUR GLORY. AMEN.

Transplant

October 7, 2010

My fellow intercessor Torre is the epitome of continuity. His prayers are based on the lectionary readings, and there is continuity one day to another.
On the other hand, I write in spurts. I frequently write several prayers in one sitting, then post them over several days on a time stamp. My prayer interests are varied, and though I like doing series on particular subjects, the series may be peppered with prayers on an unrelated subject. If the continuity of the prayers appears haphazard, well, that’s because it is. However, I do strive to make the individual prayers coherent.
I got sidetracked from my neurologic series by a local intercessory effort. Sorry.

The Apostle Paul said, in a discussion of life after death, said, “There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.” (1 Cor 15:44) I can’t find it, but there is some verse that says the natural realm reflects the heavenly realm. This led me to muse, If we do organ and tissue transplants in the natural, might this be a reflection of a heavenly reality?
I’ve added two names to our list of neurologic patients–Mark, who suffered brain injury in an accident, and Gaenor, who suffered injury from a brain tumor.

Jehovah-jireh,
You are the God of all provision, Creator of all that is in heaven and in earth. The atmosphere and the ocean are vast and cannot be measured. One tree produces many fruits; one fruit produces many seeds. You flung 40,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars across the sky. We extol Your holy name.
The intricacies of the human body inspire awe. Your infinity extends to the minute and to the vast.
When Jesus was sacrificed on the cross, You provided a resurrected Jesus to walk on this earth. He had a new earthly body.
Can you transplant tissues? Joseph, Sally, Chris, Lauren, Mark, and Gaenor have all suffered neurologic injury by a variety of mechanisms. If their mitochondria are dysfuntional, give them new mitochondria, Lord. If the lining of their GI tract is allowing the the leakage of morphines into their blood stream, give them a new GI lining. If their neurons have been damaged by toxins, heavy metals, metabolic errors, or trauma, transplant new ones.
By His blood, Jesus has paid the price for this transplant. He has unlocked the door to the heavenly organ bank.
He is praying for these loved ones. We join our prayers to His.
We see through a glass darkly, but You see clearly. Send Your Holy Spirit to infill them. Commission Your holy angels to come to their aid. For these loved ones, transplant new cells, a new tissue, or a new organ, and restore Your good and perfect creation. Amen.

Luke 7:36-50

October 7, 2010

Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, “This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.”
And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”
So he said, “Teacher, say it.”
”There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”
Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”
And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.” Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”
Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”
(Luke 7:36-50)
Holy Spirit, please help us throughout this diocese recognize how much we have been forgiven.

Jesus, help us come to your table with tears of thankfulness for what you have done for us.

Father, we owed you such an enormous debt because of our sins — thank you for sending Jesus to mark the bill, “Paid In Full!”

A word received: Come to me, I AM waiting. Come to me, let me bless you. Come to me, hope in me.

Hardened hearts

October 6, 2010

Joshua 5:1 (New International Version)
Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until we had crossed over, their hearts melted and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.

Oh, Lord, would that the hardened hearts of this nation would melt before You. We pray for the lost. Amen.

Luke 7:29-35

October 6, 2010

And when all the people heard him, even the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him. (Luke 7:29-30)
Father, please help us minister to those who are willing to respond to what you are doing. Keep us from being diverted by those who will never accept your will.

And the Lord said, “To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying: ‘We played the flute for you, And you did not dance; We mourned to you, And you did not weep.’ For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by all her children.” (Luke 7:31-35)
Jesus, so many expect you to dance to their tune — to approve of whatever they are doing. Help us join that throng that loves you and obeys you.

Holy Spirit, protect our hearts from all the deceptions and norms of our culture that prevent us from responding to what Jesus is doing and saying.

Holy Trinity, one God, have mercy on us and bless and guide us. Thank you.

A word received: Pray for my people. Keep on praying. Pray for hearts that are set on fire by my Holy Spirit.

Anointed to touch?

October 5, 2010

1 Chronicles 13:9-10 (New International Version)
When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. The LORD’s anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.

O Lord, guard Your clergy from touching churches anointed by the presence of the Holy Spirit for the purpose of harming them. Amen.

Luke 7:1-9

October 5, 2010

Now when he concluded all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear to him, was sick and ready to die. So when he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to him, pleading with him to come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they begged him earnestly, saying that the one for whom He should do this was deserving, “for he loves our nation, and has built us a synagogue.” (Luke 7:1-5)
Jesus, we have cried out to you on behalf of so many of our friends and family who need your healing touch, please come and visit and heal them.

Then Jesus went with them. And when he was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying to him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.” (Luke 7:6-7)
Lord, we are not worthy, but we ask you to have mercy on those we love who are sick.

“For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” (Luke 7:8 )
Father, we too are under authority: we can do nothing unless Jesus bids us do it. Help us stay in step with him.

When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed him, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” (Luke 7:9)
Jesus, you know the measure of our faith. We turn to you in our hour of need.

And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well who had been sick. (Luke 7:10)
Thank you, Jesus, for those you are healing right now.

Holy Spirit, help us minister healing at your bidding.

Eye salve

October 4, 2010

Revelation 3:18 (New International Version)
I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.

O Lord, guard Your intercessors from doubt and from pride! Help us keep our eyes on You. Looking into Your eyes is our eye salve. Amen.

Luke 6:45-49

October 4, 2010

“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45)
Holy Spirit, search our hearts and help us recognized what is really in them, both good and evil.

“But why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46)
Holy Spirit, move our hearts, minds, and wills to do what Jesus says for us to do.

“Whoever comes to me, and hears my sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.” (Luke 6:47-48 )
Jesus, please help us build only on you; you are the rock that does not move or shake.

“But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.” (Luke 6:49)
Father, the storm is coming and with it the ruin of much. Help us rescue as many as possible of those who heard and did not act on Jesus’ words.

Thanksgiving

October 3, 2010

Another one of the autism spectrum disorder patients we have prayed for reports an improvement in symptoms. To God be the glory.

Jesus,
The Roman soldier pierced Your side with a spear, and blood and water from Your body poured forth. We thank You that this river of living water, pouring forth in love, flows through time and across space, gaining depth the further it flows–waters without measure, waters to lift and carry, waters to cleanse and heal. We thank You for the living water flowing over Joseph, Chris, Lauren, and Sally–rising over their ankles, knees, and waist, waters to swim in.
How very near Your crucifixion has brought the kingdom of God. Thank You. Amen.
Ezekiel 47, John 19:34

2 Timothy 1:3-9

October 3, 2010

I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. (2 Timothy 1:3-5)
Thank you, Father, for those who went before us and imparted the gift of faith to us.

Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. (2 Timothy 1:6)
Holy Spirit, please help us use the gifts you have given us to build up the Body of Christ.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7)
Father, you have given us a Spirit of adoption by whom we can out, “Abba, Father”. Thank you! (See Romans 8:15)

Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, (2 Timothy 1:8-9)
Jesus, help us daily answer your call; help us do works of faith, keeping our eyes on you.

      Notes from the Front Line

STUDY GUIDE: SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 04 October 3, 2010
Lectionary C, Proper 22
Theme Verse: “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31
Readings: Luke 17:5-10; 2 Timothy 1:1-14; Habakkuk 1:1-13; 2:1-4; Psalm 37:1-18

Next Week: Luke 17:11-19; 2 Timothy 2:3-15; Ruth 1:8-19a; Psalm 113

      Gospel: Luke 17:5-10

A word received: Even little faith, if it is used, can accomplish great things.

verse 7:
A word received: I am asking you to go forward in faith, trusting that what I ask of you can be done if you look to me. Faith is often just living out faithfully (underling faith fully) the daily tasks I ask of you in the midst of your daily responsibilities.

A word received: Faith can never be based on what you do — only on what I have done.

      Epistle: 2 Timothy 1:1-14

A word received: Timothy was called by Paul and the Holy Spirit to live by faith and not by fear — to live out the gifts he had been given — to use them for the building up of my body. I have called you by my Spirit to minister my love in my name to those around you. Just as Timothy was exhorted to use the gifts he had received, I exhort you to do the same. Do not let fear rob you of your reward.

      Old Testament: Habakkuk 1:1-13; 2:1-4

A word received: Habakkuk is surrounded by iniquity and asks how he is to endure it. He is my prophet and yet he is weary of the evil around him. His response is to ask my interpretation of the times. Look to me as Habakkuk did and I will show what I am doing.

      Psalm: Psalm 37:1-18

A word received: “Do not fret because of evildoers,” keep your eyes on me. Do not let others rob you of joy.
verse 3      ”Trust in the Lord”
verse 4      ”Delight yourself in the Lord”
verse 5      ”Commit your way to the Lord”
verse 7      ”Rest in the Lord”
      verse 8      ”Cease from anger”
These are all choices you can make.

The prayers of Christ Jesus

October 2, 2010

Intercessors, if the Holy Spirit brings you prayers, please consider sharing them in the comments. God bless. JW

Father,
We come before You not trusting in our own righteousness. We have no righteousness of our own–only filthy rags. We come up under the authority of the covenant of the Blood of the Lamb and under the righteousness of Christ.
Christ died for us. Christ ever liveth to make intercession for us. We yoke ourselves to Christ Jesus, His righteousness and His prayers.
Holy Spirit, enter our spirits. Our prayers are ever-failing. We cry out for the never-failing intercessions of Christ. We join our prayers for the healing of neurologic disease to the prayers of Christ Jesus sitting at the right hand of the Father.
Holy Spirit, teach us to pray as Christ Jesus prays. Jesus is praying for His dear children. Let Him pray for them within us. We rest on Him. (Silence.) Amen.

Inspiration for this prayer came from John Hyde, missionary to India.
