Luke 14:12-24

November 8, 2010

Then he also said to him who invited him, “When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” (Luke 14:12-14)
Jesus, please give us a heart to reach out to the lost and the least, the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind. Give us a heart to reach out to those who can never help us. Give us your selfless, self-giving love. Thank you.

Now when one of those who sat at the table with Him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!” Then he said to him, “A certain man gave a great supper and invited many, and sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’ But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’ And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.’ Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind.’ And the servant said, ‘Master, it is done as you commanded, and still there is room.’ Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. For I say to you that none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.’” (Luke 14:15-24)
Holy Spirit, help us respond to Jesus’ invitation to come into his kingdom feast. Help us recognize and repent of those distractions of the world and the flesh and the devil that keep us holding back — help us recognize them for what they are and repent of them.

The Welcome Home Initiative:
Jesus, we pray for Nigel and the whole team that are ministering at the Welcome Home Initiative. Bless them, bless their families. Give Nigel stamina and wisdom. Help him to know when to speak and when to be silent. When it is time for him or the other team members to speak, give them your words — words that will go to the heart and mind and spirit. Jesus, renew in our days and for al these veterans and their families the wonders of your Pentecost. Thank you.

Father, we pray that every impediment to the healing you want for the veterans at the Welcome Home Initiative will be removed by your Holy Spirit and that each of them will experience the healing power of Jesus.

I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. (Ephesians 1:18-19a)
A word received: I want you to live in hope — not just hope in an idea, but hope in me. I AM and I AM able to transform every circumstance in your life. Look to me with hope and expectation.

2 Thessalonians 2:13-17

November 7, 2010

But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, (2 Thessalonians 2:13)
Father, thank you for choosing us.

Thank you for loving us, Jesus.

Holy Spirit, thank you for your cleansing fire and for planting belief in the truth in our hearts.

to which he called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Thessalonians 2:14)
Father, thank you for calling us. Please help us daily respond to your call and obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle. (2 Thessalonians 2:15)
Holy Spirit, please help us stand fast on the gospel; help us stand on Jesus — he is the rock which does not move or shake.

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work. (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17)

Jebusites

November 7, 2010

2 Samuel 5:6-7 (New Living Translation)
David then led his men to Jerusalem to fight against the Jebusites, the original inhabitants of the land who were living there. The Jebusites taunted David, saying, “You’ll never get in here! Even the blind and lame could keep you out!” For the Jebusites thought they were safe. But David captured the fortress of Zion, which is now called the City of David.

Israel’s leaders from Joshua to the judges had attempted to conquer the Jebusites but failed.   King David refused to be conditioned by the past.

Our Heavenly Father,

Your Holy Word teaches us the righteous will live by their faithfulness to God.  David believed Your personal promise to Abraham and to his seed: “Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies.”

We are Abraham’s spiritual descendants.  We believe that all things are possible to those who believe, and we are tired of these strongholds of neurologic disease.  If a Jebusite spirit, a spirit of mockery and of rejection and of hopelessness, is part of these strongholds, we bind these spirits and loose the spirits of affirmation, love, hope, strength, and family.

Father, we believe that Jesus is the Messiah and that we are Your sons and daughters by adoption.    Help us to take possession of the strongholds of neurologic disease and brain injury, especially for Joseph, Sally, Chris, Lauren, Gaenor, Mark, Samuel, Erin, Isabella, Christy, Nick, Alan, and David.

Jesus is the Lord of life.  Jesus is the Lord of neurons and neural connections.  Jesus!  Jesus!  Jesus!  Amen.

Genesis 22:17, Habakkuk 2:4, Mark 9:23, Matthew 16:19

Inspiration for this prayer came from a teaching by Francis Frangipane.

Ezra 9 and Sunday School Lesson

November 6, 2010

When these things were done, the leaders came to me, saying, “The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, with respect to the abominations of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. For they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, so that the holy seed is mixed with the peoples of those lands. Indeed, the hand of the leaders and rulers has been foremost in this trespass.” (Ezra 9:1-2)
Lord Jesus, we confess the guilt of the Episcopal Church: we have taken to ourselves all sorts of strange teachings and practices from the surrounding culture.

So when I heard this thing, I tore my garment and my robe, and plucked out some of the hair of my head and beard, and sat down astonished. (Ezra 9:3)
Holy Spirit, move us as you moved Ezra to prayer and intercession for your church and your people.

Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel assembled to me, because of the transgression of those who had been carried away captive, and I sat astonished until the evening sacrifice. (Ezra 9:4)
Father, we tremble before you because we have not been faithful to you.

At the evening sacrifice I arose from my fasting; and having torn my garment and my robe, I fell on my knees and spread out my hands to the Lord my God. And I said: “O my God, I am too ashamed and humiliated to lift up my face to You, my God; for our iniquities have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has grown up to the heavens. (Ezra 9:5-6)
Father, we are ashamed and humiliated by the transgressions of the Episcopal Church.

Since the days of our fathers to this day we have been very guilty, and for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests have been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to humiliation, as it is this day. (Ezra 9:7)
Jesus, you know all our trespasses: have mercy on us.

And now for a little while grace has been shown from the Lord our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a peg in His holy place, that our God may enlighten our eyes and give us a measure of revival in our bondage. (Ezra 9:8 )
Jesus, help us use this season of grace to return to you and your ways.

For we were slaves. Yet our God did not forsake us in our bondage; but He extended mercy to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to revive us, to repair the house of our God, to rebuild its ruins, and to give us a wall in Judah and Jerusalem. (Ezra 9:9)
Lord, you have shown us mercy when we deserved condemnation. Thank you.

And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken Your commandments, (Ezra 9:10)
Father, we don’t know what to do, but our eyes are upon you. (See 2 Chronicles 20:12)

which You commanded by Your servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land which you are entering to possess is an unclean land, with the uncleanness of the peoples of the lands, with their abominations which have filled it from one end to another with their impurity. (Ezra 9:11)
Father, please help us hearken to what your prophets have said to us in your word. Set us free of the abominations and false teachings of the surrounding culture.

Now therefore, do not give your daughters as wives for their sons, nor take their daughters to your sons; and never seek their peace or prosperity, that you may be strong and eat the good of the land, and leave it as an inheritance to your children forever.’ (Ezra 9:12)
Holy Spirit, guide our sons and daughters and our grandchildren and theirs into wise marriages with fellow believers in you.

And after all that has come upon us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt, since You our God have punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us such deliverance as this, should we again break Your commandments, and join in marriage with the people committing these abominations? Would You not be angry with us until You had consumed us, so that there would be no remnant or survivor? (Ezra 9:13-14)
Thank you for your mercy, Jesus.

O Lord God of Israel, You are righteous, for we are left as a remnant, as it is this day. Here we are before You, in our guilt, though no one can stand before You because of this!” (Ezra 9:15)
Jesus, we are called by your name; help us by your Holy Spirit to humble ourselves and pray and seek your face and turn from our wicked ways, so that you will hear from heaven and forgive our sins and heal our land and your church. Thank you. (See 2 Chronicles 7:14)

STUDY GUIDE: SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 09, November 7, 2010
Lectionary C, All Saints Day Propers
Theme Verse: “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31
Readings: Luke 6:20-36; Ephesians 1:11-23; Job 19:23-27; Psalm 149
Memory Verse: “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:31)
Next Week: Luke 21:5-19; 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13; Malachi 3:13-4:6; Psalm 98
      Gospel: Luke 6:20-36

Verses 20-26: A word received: I can bless you even when you are poor, or hungry, sorrowful, hated, excluded, reviled and cast out as evil. I can meet you in the midst of every grief with my blessing. I can do that because I know every grief. I AM a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. Those whose lives are given over to wealth and riches do not know my blessing because they think they have no need of my help. They are poor, blind, and deaf and do not know it. I can call them to repentance but they have to choose to recognize their need of my help.

Verses: 27-36: A word received: I want you to break out of your comfortable patterns of behavior. I want you to reach out to the unloved, to those in need, to those who grieve. Come to me; let me lead you by the hand. I will show you what to do.

      Epistle: Ephesians 1:11-23

A word received: Do not cease praying for the saints, that is for one another. Pray that they will receive the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Jesus [i.e., so that you may know him better]. Wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Jesus are desperately needed by my people today. Pray for one another — pray without ceasing.

      Old Testament: Job 19:23-27

A word received: Job, in the midst of his griefs (and they were many) and in the face of false accusations by his “comforters” knew the blessing of knowing me. He could say, “I know that my Redeemer lives.” I want you to know (underline know) that as well. I want it to be more than head knowledge — I want it to be heart knowledge, so that with Job you can stand against every accusation and grief with your knowledge of me.

      Psalm: Psalm 149

A word received: Come; join with all my holy ones down through the years: rejoice in me. Sing loud praises of me — don’t hold back. I want my people to rejoice in me.

Eutychus Raised From the Dead

November 6, 2010

Acts 20:7-12 (New International Version)
On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight. There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting. Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead. Paul went down, threw himself on the young man and put his arms around him. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “He’s alive!” Then he went upstairs again and broke bread and ate. After talking until daylight, he left. The people took the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.

This miracle takes place in Troas. In one of his letters, Paul says this:

2 Corinthians 2:12 (Young’s Literal Translation)
And having come to Troas for the good news of the Christ, and a door to me having been opened in the Lord,

Whether this ‘door’ is a metaphor for opportunities to witness or an open portal into heaven, or both, is up to debate. Regardless, the presence of God was potent.

Father God,
We praise Your name for the new life provided for Eutychus. You are a God of new beginnings. Open a door to Joseph, Sally, Chris, Lauren, Gaenor, Mark, Samuel, Erin, Isabella, Christy, Nick, Alan, and David in the Lord! Amen.

Washington

November 6, 2010

Two statutes of prominent figures placed in the Washington state capitol are Mother Joseph (intercessor) and Marcus Whitman (missionary). From the healing ministry of John G. Lake based in Spokane, WA (today the international base of the International Healing Rooms) to the birthing of the Charismatic Renewal through Dennis Bennet in Seattle, to the launching of Women’s Aglow, to the Sentinel Group and George Otis Jr. transformation videos, Washington has been marked by God to bring forth revival, and send forth missionaries to the ends of the earth.

O Lord, may it continue to be so. Amen.

Ezra 8:21-23, 31-32

November 5, 2010

Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river of Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from him the right way for us and our little ones and all our possessions. (Ezra 8:21)
Father, please help us humble ourselves before you with fasting and prayer.

For I was ashamed to request of the king an escort of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy on the road, because we had spoken to the king, saying, “The hand of our God is upon all those for good who seek him, but his power and his wrath are against all those who forsake him.” (Ezra 8:22)
Jesus, we ask for your protecting hand to be on this diocese and the Diocese of South Carolina and all your other faithful dioceses. Protect us as we go through this time of corruption in the Episcopal Church.

So we fasted and entreated our God for this, and he answered our prayer. (Ezra 8:23)
Holy Spirit, guide us as we fast and entreat Jesus’ protecting hand.

Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go to Jerusalem. And the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and from ambush along the road. (Ezra 8:31)
Jesus, please keep your hand upon us and guide us day by day.

So we came to Jerusalem, and stayed there three days. (Ezra 8:32)
Father, bring us at last to that heavenly Jerusalem where all your saints will be gathered together. Thank you.

Resurrection of Tabitha

November 5, 2010

Acts 9:36-41 (New International Version)
In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor. About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room. Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, “Please come at once!”
Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.
Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called for the believers, especially the widows, and presented her to them alive.

Lydda (meaning-travail)
Joppa (meaning-fairness; comeliness; beauty)
Tabitha (meaning-gazelle)

Lord Jesus,
You are the light of the world. Whoever follows You will have the light of life. Your Holy Spirit visited Tabitha when Peter prayed for her. It unraveled her infirmity and the shroud of death that encompassed her.
We pray, Lord, unravel the infirmities that bind the neural tissue of Joseph, Sally, Chris, Lauren, Gaenor, Mark, Samuel, Erin, Isabella, Christy, Nick, Alan, and David. Help them to shake off the darkness and leap into Your healing light. From travail to victory, Lord. From travail to victory. Amen.
John 8:12

Washington

November 5, 2010

Washington was the first state to vote to legalize abortion by the vote of people (Ref. 20, Nov. 3rd, 1970) before it ended up affecting the entire nation through Roe-v-Wade.

Our Father in heaven,
Would that the year 2010 be the end of a 40 yr cycle of death (1970-2010) in the state of Washington. Have mercy, Lord. Have mercy. Amen.

Luke 13:17-21

November 4, 2010

And when he said these things, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him. (Luke 13:17)
Jesus, please help us rejoice in all that you are doing and we ask you to deal with your adversaries inside and outside of the church.

Then he said, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and put in his garden; and it grew and became a large tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.” (Luke 13:18-19)
Holy Spirit, plant that kingdom seed in all our hearts; help us cultivate it; and let it grow and flourish so that others will find shelter and a place to come to in our faith.

And again he said, “To what shall I liken the kingdom of God? It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened.” (Luke 13:20-21)
Jesus, let the leaven of faith, hope, and charity work their way through our lives till all is leavened. Thank you.

From: Noel Dawes
Subject: Welcome Home Initiative, 9th Retreat, Nov 8-10, 2010: Please Pray!
Dear Welcome Home Initiative (WHI) Prayer Warriors,
I planned to get this email out at least a week ago but just simply didn’t. Please forgive me for not writing sooner!
I have attached the latest news concerning the WHI. Having had such a warmly received Retreat at the end of September, significantly due to your prayers, we are now back at the Spiritual Life Center again for the last Retreat of 2010. Although this is the 9th Retreat in the series, it is actually only the 8th one to be undertaken at the SLC as the May 2010 Retreat was called off at short notice as many of the combat Veterans coming to it canceled in the few days immediately before it started.
This Retreat is a full one, praise God! There are more OIF (Iraq) Veterans than ever, but none who have served in Afghanistan. We have 6 Chaplains coming including one all the way from Australia who is writing a study for his Army on how the US and Canadian armed forces look after and provide medical, psychological and spiritual healing for their Soldiers of all services who suffer from combat trauma. One of the several alumni coming is a 93 years old World War 2 (Pacific Theater) Veteran. We are at full stretch with our ‘team’ on this Retreat (we dislike separating ourselves into ‘team’ and ‘Veterans’ since we are all one and all participants as Jesus heals us by the power of the Holy Spirit). Bishop David Bena and his wife, Mary Ellen, are away in AK visiting family and we heard today that another valued and much healed Vet was taken to the hospital on Tuesday morning with what might be a bleeding ulcer somewhere in his digestive tract. Please pray fervently for Hal to be fully healed even though he will not be able to come to this Retreat.
I’ve attached a Word file with an update about the Retreat for your prayers. We have recently heard of several accounts of how some prayer warriors pass this update on to friends and also to others in their church and that many more have prayed as a result. Please help us maximize prayer in any way you can, as these great folk have shown vision, willingness and commitment to do.
Please also circulate the Closing Ceremony Invitation as widely as possible. Anyone can come to this, including YOU – if you are able to!
I anticipate the next update will be that of Day 1 which will be written and emailed overnight Monday night/Tuesday morning.
Thank you each for praying for this supremely important area of ministry – the healing of our Veterans who have combat trauma.
      With Jesus’ love and blessings,
Noel

The resurrection of Lazarus

November 4, 2010

John 11:41 New International Version
So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me.”

Dear Jesus,
We believe that the Father sent You to earth. We believe that You are the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. We believe that You are enthroned at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us. Please pray for a furious invasion of the Father’s love into Joseph, Sally, Chris, Lauren, Gaenor, Mark, Samuel, Erin, Isabella, Christy, Nick, Alan, and David. With God, nothing is impossible. Amen.

Psalm 119:73-80

November 3, 2010

Your hands have made me and fashioned me; give me understanding, that I may learn your commandments. (Psalm 119:73)
Holy Spirit, give us wisdom and understanding.

Those who fear you will be glad when they see me, because I have hoped in your word. (Psalm 119:74)
Jesus, you are my hope and my glory! Please give me your word daily.

I know, O Lord, that your judgments are right, and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me. (Psalm 119:75)
Father, thank you for all the hard times: accomplish your purposes with my life.

Let, I pray, your merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to your word to your servant. (Psalm 119:76)
Jesus, I have hoped in you your word; you are my strength.

Let your tender mercies come to me, that I may live; for your law is my delight. (Psalm 119:77)
Thank you for your tender mercies; help me delight in you and your ways.

Let the proud be ashamed, for they treated me wrongfully with falsehood; but I will meditate on your precepts. (Psalm 119:78 )
Holy Spirit, please bring all those who have gained by falsehood to repentance.

Let those who fear you turn to me, those who know your testimonies. (Psalm 119:79)
Father, grant that I may have a good testimony and that I may keep your testimonies in my heart.

Let my heart be blameless regarding your statutes, that I may not be ashamed. (Psalm 119:80)
Jesus, cleanse my heart with your word and your Holy Spirit. Thank you.

While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”
Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”

O Lord,
Teach us not to fear, to just believe, and to pray for Joseph, Sally, Chris, Lauren, Gaenor, Mark, Samuel, Erin, Isabella, Christy, Nick, Alan, and David. Amen.

Luke 13:6-9

He also spoke this parable: “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.” (Luke 13:6)
Father, we are your vineyard; please help us bear fruit in keeping with your call to us. Have mercy on us when we don’t bear the fruit you expect from us.

“Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?’” (Luke 13:7)
Jesus, you are the keeper of the vineyard; have mercy on us and help us bear fruit in keeping with your call to us.

“But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it.’” (Luke 13:8 )
Jesus, flood us with your Holy Spirit so that we bear fruit for the kingdom of God.

“‘And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down.’” (Luke 13:9)
Holy Spirit, help us recognize the nature of the Father’s patience and that if we do not bear fruit for him the he will move on. Help us repent and bear the fruit of truly turning to him. Thank you.
