SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 27, April 10, 2011

April 9, 2011

STUDY GUIDE: SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 27, April 10, 2011
Lectionary A, Fifth Sunday of Lent
Theme Verse: “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31
Readings: John 11; Romans 6:13-23; Ezekiel 37:1-14; Psalm 130
Memory Verse: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)
Next Week: Matthew (26:36-75) 27:1-54 (55_66); Philippians 2:5-11; Isaiah 45:21; Matthew 21:1-11
      Gospel: John 11

A word received: I want you to do the whole chapter. I want you to see Lazarus’ death and resurrection and mine in the context of sin and suffering. I AM the resurrection and the life — whoever believes in me will see life eternal. They tried to destroy Lazarus, they could not overcome my work. Look to me. I AM. I AM more powerful than sin and death. That is the victory this chapter proclaims.

A word received: Look at Martha’s faith and her affirmations. [This takes place in the context of a real challenge to her faith.]

[notes: Jesus wants to move Martha from general belief about himself to personal knowledge of who he is and what he can do.
*      Jesus wept even though he knew what he would do. He joins in our weeping.
*      (verse 40) Lois Gould is cancer-free after move than 25 years.
*      (verse 44) "take off grave clothes and let him go" -- symbolic of what Jesus wants to do in our lives.]

      Epistle: Romans 6:13-23

A word received: See this in the context of Ezekiel. I can make your dry bones come to life. I can bring you to new life just as I did Lazarus.

[Note: you have to look at the choice between sin and death, and life and what Jesus wants to do. He wants to bring us to new life.]

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11) A word received: I want you to see in the Corinthians passage that you (underline you) can have victory over sin.

      Old Testament: Ezekiel 37:1-14

(verse 6) A word received: When I bring you to new life, you will know that I AM LORD.

(verse 10) A word received: I AM raising up an army of my Spirit.

(verse 12) A word received: Behold, I will bring you up out of your graves, take you out of your grave clothes, and bring you into the land and life of my promise.

(verse 13) A word received: I want you to know that I AM LORD.

(verse 14) A word received: I will put my Spirit in you and you shall live.

      Psalm: Psalm 130

(verse 1) A word received: Cry out to me — I will hear you.

(verse 4) A word received: Accept my forgiveness — it leads to life.

(verse 5) A word received: Hope in me — I AM faithful.

(verse 7) A word received: I AM able to redeem you from all your sins.

Here is love

April 9, 2011

An old Welsh hymn

Here is love, vast as the ocean,
Lovingkindness as the flood,
When the Prince of Life, our Ransom,
Shed for us His precious blood.
Who His love will not remember?
Who can cease to sing His praise?
He can never be forgotten,
Throughout Heav’n’s eternal days.

On the mount of crucifixion,
Fountains opened deep and wide;
Through the floodgates of God’s mercy
Flowed a vast and gracious tide.
Grace and love, like mighty rivers,
Poured incessant from above,
And Heav’n’s peace and perfect justice
Kissed a guilty world in love.

Let me all Thy love accepting,
Love Thee, ever all my days;
Let me seek Thy kingdom only
And my life be to Thy praise;
Thou alone shalt be my glory,
Nothing in the world I see.
Thou hast cleansed and sanctified me,
Thou Thyself hast set me free.

In Thy truth Thou dost direct me
By Thy Spirit through Thy Word;
And Thy grace my need is meeting,
As I trust in Thee, my Lord.
Of Thy fullness Thou art pouring
Thy great love and power on me,
Without measure, full and boundless,
Drawing out my heart to Thee.

Romans 9:14-15 and 2 Chronicles 7:14

April 9, 2011

What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? Certainly not! (Romans 9:14)
Father, please help us put off the old man and put on the righteousness that comes from knowing your son and walking in his ways. Thank you for your righteousness.

For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion.” (Romans 9:15)
Jesus, have mercy on us, have compassion on us. Let your light shine forth in the present darkness in the church and in the nation.

“If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)
Holy Spirit, move us and the leaders of our church and government to humble ourselves and pray and seek your face. Holy Spirit, heal our land.

A word received 6/4/2009: Pray for this nation. Pray for wise and godly men and women who will lead my people in my ways. Pray for the courts, that they will do true justice. Pray for the Congress and the legislatures, that they will have a spirit of wisdom and discernment. Pray for the President and the Governors, that their hearts will be turned into my ways.

A word received 6/25/2009: Pray for the President.
Pray for my work in his heart and mind.
Pray for wise and godly counselors for him.
Pray for wisdom in the storm.
Pray that he will look to me rather than opinion polls.
Pray for my word to lodge in his heart.

Praying the Nicene Creed, a word received 12/29/07: Each day I want you to take a phrase from the Nicene Creed and pray that phrase. My people need to hear what is true and make it their own.
I believe in one God,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thank you for being one and thank you for your love for one another. Please help me, help your people live in the reality of your unity and love. Thank you.
the Father Almighty,
Father, thank you for being a father to me. Thank you that by your might you have made your son Jesus known to us so that we can become your children.
maker of heaven and earth,
Thank you, Father, for your creation. Please help us by your Holy Spirit to be better stewards of your creation.
and of all things visible and invisible;
Father, we know that we are surrounded by your angelic hosts and that whole company of heaven, that cloud of witnesses that has gone before us. Help us to be steady in you till we reach that place of rest. Thank you.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
Father, guide us by your Holy Spirit so that every other “lord” in our lives is brought under the sovereign rule of Jesus and he becomes our one Lord. Thank you.
the only begotten Son of God,
Father, thank you for sending your one and only son to us so that we might become your children.
begotten of his Father before all worlds,
Jesus, you have always been there; help us receive you into every part of our lives.
God of God, Light of Light,
Jesus, you are God and you are the light to take us through this time of darkness in the church and in the nation. You are the word of God and are a lamp to our feet.

***** For Prisoners.
O GOD, who spares when we deserve punishment, and in your wrath remembers mercy; we humbly beseech you, of your goodness, to comfort and succor all prisoners [especially those who are condemned to die]. Give them a right understanding of themselves, and of your promises; that, trusting wholly in your mercy, they may not place their confidence anywhere but in you. Relieve the distressed, protect the innocent, awaken the guilty; and forasmuch as you alone bring light out of darkness, and good out of evil, grant to these your servants, that by the power of your Holy Spirit they may be set free from the chains of sin and death, and may be brought to newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

“Remember the prisoners as if chained with them–those who are mistreated–since you yourselves are in the body also.” Hebrews 13:3
Remember those who are imprisoned in the Middle East because of their desire for democracy and dignity, e.g., in Syria, Bahrain, Egypt, and Libya.

April 9, 2011

Ezekiel 46:1-2a (New Living Translation)
“This is what the Sovereign Lord says: The east gateway of the inner courtyard will be closed during the six workdays each week, but it will be open on Sabbath days and the days of new moon celebrations. The prince will enter the entry room of the gateway from the outside. Then he will stand by the gatepost while the priest offers his burnt offering and peace offering.

Jesus, You are the Prince of Peace. Come by _______ Church and enter our worship this Sunday. Amen.

Joshua 5:13-15

April 8, 2011

And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a man stood opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand. and joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us or for our adversaries?” (Joshua 5:13)
Father, when we prepare to go into battle, prepare our hearts to recognize your servants.

So he said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to him, “What does my Lord say to his servant?” (Joshua 5:14)
Lord Jesus Christ, show us each day what you require of us. Help us to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly before you. (See Micah 6:8 ) Lord, we keep asking the wrong question: we ask, “Are you on our side?” The correct question is, “Are we on your side?”

Then the Commander of the LORD’S army said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so. (Joshua 5:15)
Holy Spirit, please help us recognize the times and places of holiness and in humility take off our shoes be fore you to honor you.

A word received: Keep waiting on me.

A Jesus prayer

April 7, 2011

From St. Augustine’s Prayer Book–

Heart of Jesus, think of me.
Eyes of Jesus, look on me.
Face of Jesus, comfort me.
Hands of Jesus, bless me.
Feet of Jesus, guide me.
Arms of Jesus, hold me.
Body of Jesus, feed me.
Blood of Jesus, wash me.
Jesus, make me thus thine own,
Here and in the world to come. Amen.

Joshua 3-4

April 7, 2011

Then Joshua rose early in the morning; and they set out from Acacia Grove and came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they crossed over. So it was, after three days, that the officers went through the camp; and they commanded the people, saying, “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests, the Levites, bearing it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it. (Joshua 3:1-3)
LORD, help us to move as you move — to be in step with you.

Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure. Do not come near it, that you may know the way by which you must go, for you have not passed this way before.” (Joshua 3:4)
Holy Father, help us know your holiness and stand in awe of you.

And Joshua said to the people, “Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.” (Joshua 3:5)
Holy Spirit, sanctify us and do your wonders among us. Renew in our day the wonders of your Pentecost.

Then Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, “Take up the ark of the covenant and cross over before the people.” So they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people. (Joshua 3:6)
Jesus, help us go forward as a covenant people.

And the Lord said to Joshua, “This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. You shall command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, saying, ‘When you have come to the edge of the water of the Jordan, you shall stand in the Jordan.’” (Joshua 3:7-8 )
Lord, help us come to the Jordan — to cross over into the land of your promise.

So Joshua said to the children of Israel, “Come here, and hear the words of the Lord your God.” And Joshua said, “By this you shall know that the living God is among you, and that He will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Hivites and the Perizzites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Jebusites: (Joshua 3:9-10)
Father, help us know you by your deeds.

Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is crossing over before you into the Jordan. Now therefore, take for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man from every tribe. (Joshua 3:11-12)
Holy Spirit, raise up men and women out of every congregation in this diocese who will answer your call.

And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, the waters that come down from upstream, and they shall stand as a heap.” (Joshua 3:13)
Father, thank you for making a way through the Jordan for us — thank you for sending your son Jesus.

So it was, when the people set out from their camp to cross over the Jordan, with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people, and as those who bore the ark came to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests who bore the ark dipped in the edge of the water (for the Jordan overflows all its banks during the whole time of harvest), that the waters which came down from upstream stood still, and rose in a heap very far away at Adam, the city that is beside Zaretan. So the waters that went down into the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, failed, and were cut off; and the people crossed over opposite Jericho. Then the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan; and all Israel crossed over on dry ground, until all the people had crossed completely over the Jordan. (Joshua 3:14-17)
Holy Spirit, help all the priests of this diocese to stand firm.

And it came to pass, when all the people had completely crossed over the Jordan, that the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying: “Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from every tribe, (Joshua 4:1-2)
Jesus, guide Bishop Bill and the leaders of this diocese as they call men and women into your service.

and command them, saying, ‘Take for yourselves twelve stones from here, out of the midst of the Jordan, from the place where the priests’ feet stood firm. You shall carry them over with you and leave them in the lodging place where you lodge tonight.’” (Joshua 4:3)
Father, help us come to those places where you have done your mighty deeds and pick up our memorial stones to remember your deeds.

Then Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the children of Israel, one man from every tribe; and Joshua said to them: “Cross over before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of the Jordan, and each one of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, (Joshua 4:4-5)
Jesus, help each man and woman that you call into your service to answer the call and carry their memorial stones.

that this may be a sign among you when your children ask in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ Then you shall answer them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever. ” (Joshua 4:6-7)
Father, please bless the ministry to the youths and children of this diocese so that when they ask what is the meaning of our memorials, that we can point them to you and what you have done for us through your son’s death and resurrection and by sending the Holy Spirit to us.

And the children of Israel did so, just as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones from the midst of the Jordan, as the Lord had spoken to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them to the place where they lodged, and laid them down there. Then Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant stood; and they are there to this day. (Joshua 4:8-9)
Jesus, help us build memorials to your deeds rather than our own. Help us to be living memorial stones to your great deeds. Thank you.

So the priests who bore the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan until everything was finished that the Lord had commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua; and the people hurried and crossed over. Then it came to pass, when all the people had completely crossed over, that the ark of the Lord and the priests crossed over in the presence of the people. And the men of Reuben, the men of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh crossed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses had spoken to them. About forty thousand prepared for war crossed over before the Lord for battle, to the plains of Jericho. On that day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they had feared Moses, all the days of his life. Then the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying, “Command the priests who bear the ark of the Testimony to come up from the Jordan.” Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, “Come up from the Jordan.” And it came to pass, when the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord had come from the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet touched the dry land, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and overflowed all its banks as before. Now the people came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they camped in Gilgal on the east border of Jericho. And those twelve stones which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal. Then he spoke to the children of Israel, saying: “When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What are these stones?’ then you shall let your children know, saying, ‘Israel crossed over this Jordan on dry land’; (Joshua 4:10-22)
Lord, when our children ask us questions of life, help us point to you and what you have done for us — how you have enabled us to cross our “Jordans” with dry feet.

for the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed over, that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever.” (Joshua 4:23-24)
Jesus, please help us proclaim your deeds to the whole world. Send us forth in your service — that others may know your mighty deeds and fear and love you. Thank you.

This prayer was written by Ethel Tulloch Banks, cofounder of The International Order of St. Luke the Physician with her husband, Rev. Dr. John Gaynor Banks. (Reference: Sharing magazine, March/April 2011)

O loving, healing, helping Father, we come to you through faith in the promises of your dear son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Show yourself to us more and more in your nearness, love, and power, that in that knowledge, we may find rest, peace, strength, and love. Help us to rise above the pain and weariness and anxiety and to behold your face, that truly seeing you as you are, our hearts may open in such loving trust that you may do for us all that you would do. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Saudi Arabia

April 6, 2011

Current state of affairs is quiet.

Triune God,
You are sovereign over all of creation, a great and mighty God. By this prayer, we bring the nation of Saudi Arabia into Your presence. We trust that no prayer to You is wasted, even though we do not know what will happen as a consequence of our prayers. May the creative power of the Father, the life-giving power of the Spirit, and the healing power of the Son meet this nation at its point of need. Amen.

Inspiration for this prayer came from a prayer written by Canon Roy Lawrence, an Anglican priest with a healing ministry. (Reference: Sharing magazine, March/April 2011)

“No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.” (Joshua 1:5)
Jesus, be with Bishop Bill as you were with Moses and Joshua. Write it on his heart that you will never leave him nor forsake him. Thank you.

“Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.” (Joshua 1:6)
Holy Spirit, please fill Bishop Bill, Bishop David, and Bishop Dan up with your courage so that they may rightly establish the parishes of this diocese.

“Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:7)
Father, show our bishops, priests, deacons, and lay leaders how to rightly apply your commandments and ordinances. Keep them on the straight and narrow path so that they turn neither to the right nor to the left. Thank you.

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” (Joshua 1:8 )
Holy Father, fill the heats and minds and mouths of the leaders and teachers of this diocese with your word and your Spirit. Let your word, your living word, be in their hearts and thoughts and mouths day and night.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)
Holy Spirit, thank you for helping us know the presence of Jesus in our lives. Give all of us courage to go forth in the power and truth of the gospel. Thank you.

Father, thank you for being a father to me. Thank you that by your might you have made your son Jesus known to us so that we can become your children.
maker of heaven and earth,
Thank you, Father, for your creation. Please help us by your Holy Spirit to be better stewards of your creation.
and of all things visible and invisible;
Thank you.

Japanese reactors

April 5, 2011

Tainted water

Our Father in heaven,
You are the Creator of heaven and earth and all that is therein. You are the Creator of the laws of thermodynamics, of light and energy. You are the Creator of subatomic particles and space. You are the Creator of the moon and tides and currents and winds. We humbly beseech You to be present to the Fukushima reactors. Jehovah Shammah! Like a balm spread over a wound, rest upon this place. Rest upon the laws of thermodynamics, upon the subatomic particles, upon the land, upon the water, and upon the atomosphere. Rest upon the hearts of all who work there.
Jehovah Shalom, bring peace! Amen.

Exodus 32:7-13

April 5, 2011

And the LORD said to Moses, “Go, get down! For your people whom you brought out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves. (Exodus 32:7)
Lord Jesus Christ, you brought us out of bondage to sin and death by your death and resurrection and by sending your Holy Spirit to us. We so quickly turn aside from your path. Restore us and renew us.

They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molded calf, and worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, ‘This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!’ ” (Exodus 32:8 )
Father, “all we like sheep have gone astray” (Isa 53:6). Draw us back to you. Guide the shepherds of your flock so that they lead us back into your ways.

And the LORD said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people! (Exodus 32:9)
Holy Spirit, soften our hearts and our necks so that we willingly accept the yoke of Christ.

Now therefore, let me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation.” (Exodus 32:10)
LORD, we are a sinful people, have mercy on us.

Then Moses pleaded with the LORD his God, and said: “LORD, why does your wrath burn hot against your people whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians speak, and say, ‘He brought them out to harm them, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce wrath, and relent from this harm to your people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of I give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’” (Exodus 32:11-13)
Holy Spirit, move in the hearts of your people — move them to stand in the gap and intercede for your church and your people. As you raised up Moses in his day, raise up intercessors in our day. Thank you.

So the LORD relented from the harm which he said he would do to his people. (Exodus 32:14)
Holy Trinity, one God, your mercies are new every morning — thank you.

Tomb of Malachi

April 5, 2011

Malachi is buried in the same catacomb as Haggai, on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.

Malachi 3:16-17 (Good News Translation)

Then the people who feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord listened and heard what they said. In his presence, there was written down in a book a record of those who feared the Lord and respected him.
They will be my people, says the Lord Almighty. On the day when I act, they will be my very own. I will be merciful to them as parents are merciful to the children who serve them.

Father,
We cry out for the fear of the Lord in Israel and throughout the Middle East and northern Africa. Pour out a spirit of humility, respect, and godliness on this land. Amen.

Piled high

April 5, 2011

Job 22:25-26 (Good News Translation)
Let Almighty God be your gold, and let him be silver, piled high for you. Then you will always trust in God and find that he is the source of your joy.

Almighty God,
You are our hearts’ desire. Pile Yourself high for us!
