Luke 10:25-37

May 26, 2011

And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” (Luke 10:25)
Jesus, teacher, thank you for your patience with us when we test you.

He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?” (Luke 10:26)
Holy Spirit, help all of us in this diocese dig into the Scriptures; help us hear you speaking to us through them.

So he answered and said, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’” (Luke 10:27)
Father, help us love you with all parts of our lives; and help us love and seek out our neighbors.

And he said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” (Luke 10:28 )
Holy Trinity, one God, help us in the doing of you’re your word. Help us love you in thought, in deed, and in the words we speak. Help us to love our neighbors with your eternal love.

But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10:29)
Jesus, this where we go off the rails so often: we seek to justify ourselves. It is only by your cross and blood that I am made clean and whole. It is by your death and resurrection that I am justified: help me to always remember this.

Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. (Luke 10:30-33)
Jesus, help us to have compassion on the wounded we meet — those wounded in mind, body or spirit.

So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ (Luke 10:34-35)
Help us, Holy Spirit, to give of ourselves to those who are in need.

So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” (Luke 10:36-37)
Jesus, help us “go and do likewise.” Thank you.

A word received: Keep looking to me; I AM the bread of life.
