Isaiah 43:1-8 and Sunday School Lesson

May 8, 2011

But now, thus says the LORD, who created you, O Jacob, and he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine. (Isaiah 43:1)
      Jesus, please help us set aside our fears and turn to you. Thank you for redeeming us by your cross and blood and resurrection.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you. (Isaiah 43:2)
      Lord, many in your church are passing through deep waters, and some have been swept away; have mercy on us and help us know you are with us.

For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I gave Egypt for your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in your place. (Isaiah 43:3)
      Father, you are our God and you have made us your children by sending your Holy Spirit into our hearts; and so we cry, “Abba, Father!”

Since you were precious in my sight, you have been honored, and I have loved you; therefore I will give men for you, and people for your life. (Isaiah 43:4)
      Holy Spirit, thank you for all those witnesses you have sent in the past to us. Please continue to remind us of all that Jesus has done for us.

Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your descendants from the east, and gather you from the west; (Isaiah 43:5)
      Lord, draw all our children and grandchildren to you.

I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ and to the south, ‘Do not keep them back!’ Bring my sons from afar, and my daughters from the ends of the earth–everyone who is called by my name, whom I have created for my glory; I have formed him, yes, I have made him.” (Isaiah 43:6-7)
      Jesus, set free all in our family who are in bondage: Lord, set the captives free!

Bring out the blind people who have eyes, and the deaf who have ears. (Isaiah 43:8 )
      Jesus, restore hearing and sight to your people and to the church. Move in the healing and preaching ministries in this diocese. Thank you!

Flood

May 8, 2011

The crest of the Mississippi River is coming to the Mississippi Delta. Many members of our parish are moving out of their homes, not because the levees have broken, but because the water will pour over the levees. Roads are being closed.
Because Yazoo is on the edge of the Delta, part of the city is on high ground. We don’t know how many homeless refugees will arrive.

Ecclesiastes 3:11,14 (New Living Translation)
God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end. . . . I know that whatever God does is final. Nothing can be added to it or taken from it. God’s purpose is that people should fear him.

Father,
I declare Your purpose for Yazoo City and the Mississippi Delta: May we fear You.
In keeping and throwing away, may we fear You. In tearing down and building up, may we fear You. In welcoming and bidding farewell, may we fear You. In quiet and speech, may we fear You.
Redeem the past. Redeem the present. Redeem the future.
Heal the land. Restore order to the waterways. Fill the atmosphere with the praise of Your holy Name.
Order our footsteps and our hearts. Commission Your holy angels to assist us in all that we do. Amen.

Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, (1 Peter 1:22-23)
      Lord Jesus Christ, bring us to new birth in you. Lord, once again I give you the whole territory of my life; fill me anew with your Holy Spirit. Thank you.

      Notes from the Front Line

***** Excerpt from Beyond Our Selves by Catherine Marshall, McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1961, pages 49-53, 56

      I wonder how many others there are who have thought of formal church membership as a substitute for that direct Father-child relationship that God really wants of us? No wonder much of our religious life today is plagued by vagueness. Let us not mistake it: Entering in does take childlikeness. The door through which we enter into Life is a low door. And sometimes it is the humble and the needy who can show the rest of us the way.
      So a group of ministers recently discovered. One of them, Bruce Larson of Faith at Work magazine, told me this story. They had gathered for a two-day retreat at a church in New Jersey to discuss mutual problems and to pray about them. As so often happens, the discussion part predominated. It was late afternoon of the final day when a startling event occurred.
      Suddenly the door of their meeting room opened and a stranger walked in. The minister of the host church know him, had seen him often around the neighborhood. Self-consciously the man seated himself at the fringe of the circle. Though there was no more than a momentary pause in the discussion, the experienced eyes of the other clergymen present took in the situation–the watery eyes, the sagging shoulders, the seedy clothing. Obviously the man was an alcoholic.
      The discussion continued while the stranger listened. “it seems to me,” a crisp voice said, “that all we have been talking about these two days can be summed up in our need for God’s power–the kind of power that changes lives, heals restores that–”
      He stopped, his attention arrested by the agitated movements o the stranger.
      ”That’s it! That’s what I need. I could use some of that.”
      There was sudden silence. While everyone watched, his bleary eyes filled a bit more and the quavering voice continued.
      ”My name is Ernie. I drink too much. People have tried to help me…doctors, hospitals, clinics, missions, and all that. But I…I can’t seem to stop. How do I get this power you’re talking about?”
      The question hung, quivering in the silence. Despite the fact that these men were experienced in dealing with people in need, the intrusion was embarrassing. There was a time schedule for the meeting, trains and planes to be caught, families to get back to, next Sunday’s sermons to think about. Closing time was at hand.
      Finally, a white-haired man spoke up, “Ernie, all of us have problems too. It’s problem-filled world…” The voice of the elderly minister was gentle, suave, as he sought to identify with the stranger. All of the men know that the pastor who was speaking had had professional training in counseling.
      ”As to how we can get God’s help. Well, that isn’t always too easy. It takes patience, time. There are many roads to God, many avenues by which–”
      ”Damn!” The interruption was explosive, passionate.
      ”Damn…Damn…Damn…Damn!”
      The quiet of the room was suddenly being blasted by Ted, a young minister and a former businessman, anger and impatience written clearly on his face. Again and again he beat his fist down on the seat of the empty chair beside him.
      ”This man doesn’t want to hear about our problems,” Ted said vehemently. “He’s asked us a question–how can he get God’s help to stop drinking? We haven’t answered him. If we don’t know the answer, then let’s adjourn this meeting, stop our endless talking, go home and tell our people that the church hasn’t any answer for today. In that case, we better stop being hypocrites and shut the church doors for good.”
      There was a shocked silence, but the impassion words had cleared the air. Almost simultaneously, five or six men–including the angry young preacher and the white-haired minister–rose and walked over to Ernie.
      Ted knelt in front of the alcoholic. “Ernie, do you believe that Jesus Christ can come into your life and change it?”
      The watery eyes looked down, childlike. “Yes…Yes, I do.”
      Then we’re going to pray right now, Ernie, that He will do this for you.”
      They young minister took both of Ernie’s hand in his. The white-haired preacher stood behind, placed both hands gently on top of the alcoholic’s head. The others stood around in a semicircle, each one with his hands of the stranger.
      Ted’s prayer was short, hard-hitting, impassioned. He asked for Christ’s healing power for Ernie, for the forgiveness of sins, for the beginning of a new life.
      ”Now, Ernie,” Ted said, “you pray too. Just thank God that He has heard you and healed you.”
      ”I hope so,” Ernie quavered.
      ”Not hope so. He has!
      ”I—–Well, I’d like to believe that.”
      The answer was gentle, but firm. “Ernie, thank Jesus that He was already come into your life.”
      The room became completely still. And then in wavery sentences Ernie’s voice reached up to God. “God, I’m a tired, weak old man. I don’t see what use I am to anyone. But I’d like to find the new life they talk about. Please help me.”
      It was real. It was vital. Every man in the room knew it, felt it. They had been talking about power. This was power.
      Forgotten were train schedules, plane reservations, other obligations. For the first time in two days, real contact had been made with God through one of the least like of persons. The air was charged with emotion. Out from the depths came some of the deep needs of the ministers themselves.
      A pastor form New England began it. At first his words seemed unrelated–”I was driving down here several days ago, feeling lonely and apart form God. While crossing over Bear Mountain Bridge, I looked in the ice-clogged river and saw a small boat locked in the ice some distance off shore.
      ”That boat fascinated me. For my life has been like that. Frozen, isolated, shut within myself. I’m frozen with the fear of other people’s opinions, the fear of not being a success, the fear of not pleasing people.”
      Suddenly his eyes filled with tears. “Would you pray for me, that I’ll get thawed out so I can really help people again?”
      There was no hesitation now. The men quickly gathered around him. All but Ernie, who hung back, shyly. But the young minister walked over to him.
      ”Ernie, come on over and pray with the rest of us.”
      ”Oh no! I couldn’t do that…”
      The minister took him by the hand. “Look, Ernie, you’ve received, now you must give. And we need you now.”
      So Ernie knelt beside the minister and prayed with the others. The prayer was very simple. And in this room miraculously filled with power, every one of the ministers made his way back to God with a childlike renewal of commitment.
      Later the minister from New England was marveling to the young preacher at the turn of events. “As long as I live, I’ll never get over it,” he said. “What had happened to Ernie minutes before was the real thing. The proof was that it was Ernie, with his winy breath in my face, who was God’s channel for transmitting the power. It was like electricity flowing through to me.” And he added with awe in his vice, “Except ye become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven…”
      And so we enter in, each of us, up our own secret stairs into the most joyous and rewarding relationship of our lives. The good news is that this is not experience meant just for the saints. God welcomes us no matter what our lives have been, no matter what we have done of have failed to do, whether we feel adequate or broken or merely empty.
      …
      The secret is simply this: that the Christian life must be lived in the will, not in the emotions; that God regards the decisions and choices of a man’s will as the decisions and choices of the man himself–no matter how contrary his emotions may be. Moreover, when this principle is applied, the emotions must always capitulate to the will.

We declare that our military forces will advance quickly and strategically against our enemies, and that the HOLY SPIRIT will give them wisdom and discernment to outsmart our enemies.We bind the prince of the power of the air according to Eph. 2:2 and spiritual wickedness in high places according to Eph. 6:12. We remove religious spirits from high places, (2 Kings 23:8). Let the high places be purged, (2 Chron. 34:3).

Luke 3 and Proverbs 16

May 6, 2011

Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not, John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (Luke 3:15-16)
      Jesus, please come among us and baptize us afresh with your Holy Spirit. Immerse us in the fire of your love.

His winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly clean out his threshing floor, and gather the wheat into his barn; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” (Luke 3:17)
      Holy Spirit, please burn away the chaff in our lives. Refine and purify us from sin.

When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:21-22)
      Holy Father, please help us love your son Jesus with your love for him. Thank you.

All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirits. (Proverbs 16:2)
      LORD, my capacity for self-deception is great; help me see myself through your eyes.

Commit your works to the LORD, and your thoughts will be established. (Proverbs 16:3)
      Father, I commit my ways to you; establish my thoughts in your word.

In mercy and truth Atonement is provided for iniquity; And by the fear of the LORD one departs from evil. (Proverbs 16:6)
      Jesus, help me depart from all evil. Thank you.

      Praying the Apostles’ Creed

I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty,
      Father, thank you that it all depends on your strength and might, and not ours.
Maker of heaven and earth;
      The heavens declare your glory, and the firmament shows forth your handiwork. (Psalm 19:1) The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys also are covered with grain; they shout for joy, they also sing to you. (Psalm 65:13)
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
      Jesus, there is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved but yours. (Acts 4:12)
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
      Holy Spirit, thank you for what you have brought forth in Jesus.
Born of the Virgin Mary;
      Father, thank you that Mary was willing to say, “Yes,” to the angel Gabriel. Thank you for the risk she was willing to take for us.
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      Jesus, thank you for what you were willing to suffer for our salvation; please help us to endure what we must suffer to see the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion restored to Apostolic faith.
Was crucified, dead, and buried;
      Holy Father, please restore to the common life of your people the saving knowledge of what Jesus endured by his crucifixion, death, and burial.
He descended into hell;
      Jesus, you went to the place of the dead to preach to the dead that they might live according to God in the spirit. Thank you. (1 Peter 4:6)
The third day he rose again from the dead;
      Thank you, Jesus; for by your resurrection we have been raised to new life in your Spirit.
He ascended into heaven,
      Jesus, thank you for being taken up into heaven in the sight of your apostolic witnesses. Help us live day by day in the hope that as you were taken up into heaven, so you will come back in like manner. (Acts 1:11)
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
      As with the dying thief on the cross, we too say, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” (Luke 23:42)
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
      Jesus, thank you that there is now no condemnation for those who are in you, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. (Romans 8:1)
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
      Holy Spirit, your law of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. Thank you. (Romans 8:2)
The holy Catholick Church;
      Thank you for your church, Jesus; please help it to be a true vessel of your gospel in all places and in all times.
The Communion of Saints;
      THEREFORE with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord most High. Amen. (BCP 1662)
The Forgiveness of sins;
      Thank you, Jesus, for washing me with your precious blood and forgiving my sins.
The Resurrection of the body,
      LORD, please help me live day by day in the hope of the resurrection: for I know that my redeemer lives, and he shall stand at last on the earth; and after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not as a stranger. How my heart yearns within me! (Job 19:25-27)
And the Life everlasting. Amen.
      Father, I live in the hope of living forever in your presence. Thank you for this hope that sustains me day by day. Amen.

National Day of Prayer

May 5, 2011

A theme of the National Day of Prayer is “A Mighty Fortess is our God.”

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

Proverbs 3:1-10

May 5, 2011

My son, do not forget my law, but let your heart keep my commands; (Proverbs 3:1)
      Father, thank you for the high honor of being called your children. Write your commandments and word on our hearts. Thank you for Jesus making a way for us to come into your presence.

For length of days and long life and peace they will add to you. (Proverbs 3:2)
      Father, as our days are, so let our strength be (Deuteronomy 33:25b). Help us daily find our strength in you: flood us with your Holy Spirit. Thank you.

Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, (Proverbs 3:3)
      Holy Spirit, let mercy and truth come into the political discourses of our nation. Shut the lions’ mouths — all those who would consume your people with falsehood. Keep us secretly in your pavilion from the strife of tongues (Psalm 31:20b).

And so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man. (Proverbs 3:4)
      Jesus, help us first and above all seek your honor and glory.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
      Jesus, you daily “walked the walk” of a faithful son, trusting in the larger purposes of your father. Please help us do the same.

Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, and strength to your bones. (Proverbs 3:7-8 )
      Holy Spirit, help us daily seek after your wisdom and truth. Thank you.

Honor the LORD with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine. (Proverbs 3:9-10)
      Father, help us throughout this diocese to give of ourselves and our possessions to the work of your kingdom. Thank you.

A word received: Don’t be afraid. Keep coming to me.

I believe in the Holy Ghost;
      Holy Spirit, your law of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. Thank you. (Romans 8:2)
The holy Catholick Church;
      Thank you for your church, Jesus; please help it to be a true vessel of your gospel in all places and in all times.
The Communion of Saints;
Amen. (BCP 1662)
The Forgiveness of sins;
Amen.

Psalm 103:1-5

May 4, 2011

Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless his holy name! (Psalm 103:1)
      Jesus, let the power of your name shield us from all evil.

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: (Psalm 103:2)
      Father, help us throughout this diocese to be a people who remember your mighty deeds.

Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, (Psalm 103:3)
      Holy Spirit, thank you the blood of Jesus can cover every sin; help us live in the reality of that knowledge. Thank you that we are healed by his wounds.

Who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, (Psalm 103:4)
      Jesus, we ask that every parish in this diocese would become a redemption center. Crown all those who go to the Diocesan Convention with your lovingkindness and mercy.

Who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. (Psalm 103:5)
      Father, please help us eat wisely — renew us by your Holy Spirit and help us daily feast at Jesus’ banqueting table. Thank you.

Healing of ecclesiastical trauma

May 4, 2011

This prayer is best prayed several times and can be tailored to fit individual circumstances. The basic precepts of this prayer are derived from The Effects of Trauma and How to Deal With It by Jim Banks. The last paragraph is inspired by Blessing Your Spirit by Sylvia Gunter and Arthur Burk.

Father,
I come to You in weariness and disappointment. I have witnessed much betrayal and deceit in the heresy wars of the Anglican Communion. I, too, have been a sinner.
I have trusted too much in the institutional church and too little in You. I have trusted too much in church leaders and too little in You. I have trusted too much in my own efforts and too little in You. I have grieved too long for what might have been and trusted too little in You to raise up a substitute. I have harbored cold love in my heart and spoken in anger.
I have avoided those persons who disappointed or wounded me, especially _____. Even now, as I acknowledge this behavior, I still feel alienated from them. I leave them to Your judgment, Lord. I choose to forgive. Help my unforgiveness and release me from the torment of resentment and bearing grudges.
I forgive myself for not standing up to heresy decades ago, for not placing my full trust in You, and for not sharing Your love as I ought to have done.
Detach from me all unseen forces of Satan that have gained access to me through the trauma of these ecclesiastical conflicts.
In Jesus’ name, I release all of the residual effects of this trauma–physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. In particular, I release all memories of trauma, including lies, rejection, deceit, abandonment, harsh words, and curses. I require that these residual effects leave my body without harm or injury. I bless my immune system, hepatobiliary system, and renal system to clear away all toxins; foreign proteins; hormonal products; wastes of foods, alcohol, medications; or any other by-product of trauma within my body.
I release all long-term and short-term effects of stress, tension, and anxiety. I release all of the secondary vicarious trauma of watching godly Christians demeaned, dismissed, silenced, persecuted, and deposed.
Lord, will You shut down all access points and pathways through which Satan can torment me? I close the door to these access points, bar the door with the cross of Christ, and seal it with the Blood of Christ. If I have made inner vows in the midst of this conflict, please bring them to my consciousness so that I may repent of them. . . .
If there are any portions of my identity, God-given destiny, or being that I have denied, banished, or had stolen from me in this conflict, I call them forth. Father, I ask You to cleanse them in the Blood of Jesus, restore them to me, and re-integrate them into my spirit.
I declare that I no longer need to be in a heightened state of alertness for the Anglican Communion. You will resurrect the church, just as You resurrected Your Son, in a body that is qualitatively different.
Father, re-establish, synchronize, and reactivate the memories needed for my complete healing.
Bring back into balance all chemical, electrical, and magnetic communication paths within my brain, and restore them to optimal levels for stability.
Restore sweet, undisturbed, and rejuvenating sleep patterns.
Dismantle all dysfunctional automatic responses that I have gained secondary to this conflict–triggers, fears, phobias, and “push buttons.” Reorient the filing cabinet of my memories of this conflict. May I first go to the good memories, those that speak of value, purpose, belonging, and love.
If in any way, I have chosen to live in the past or the future, rather than in the present, as a result of the trauma I have received, reveal this to me so that I may repent and renounce those mindsets. . . . I choose to live in the present. I choose to not allow the past to define my future. Restore me to my proper place in time and cleanse my time from any defilement caused by sin.
When I fall asleep at night, I offer my spirit to You to receive everything I will need for the coming day. Teach me to pray.
I praise You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Before the foundation of the world, You planned for me. You nurture my spirit and watch over me. You have foreseen my pain. In Your love, You will transform the pain and negative things that I have experienced in the Anglican heresy wars into good things before the end of the story of my life. I do not know everything about who I am going to be or what I am going to do, but I am loved. I am a blessing to my family. I am a life-giver in the world. I am blessed by You. Amen.

Psalm 5:1-6

May 3, 2011

Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation. (Psalm 5:1)
      O LORD, you know my thoughts and my ways — none of them are hidden from you; have mercy on me.

Give heed to the voice of my cry, my King and my God, for to you I will pray. (Psalm 5:2)
      Father, I turn to you — hold me in the palm of your hand and keep me from stumbling.

My voice you shall hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning I will direct it to you, and I will look up. (Psalm 5:3)
      Thank you, Jesus, for hearing me and answering my cry.

For you are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, nor shall evil dwell with you. (Psalm 5:4)
      Holy Spirit, wash me and cleanse me so that no evil takes root in my life. Thank you.

The boastful shall not stand in your sight; you hate all workers of iniquity. You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man. (Psalm 5:5-6)
      Father, deal with those who speak boastfully and hold your people in contempt. Thank you.

A word received: Ask for my blessing.

Praying the Nicene Creed, a word received 12/29/07: Each day I want you to take a phrase from the Nicene Creed and pray that phrase. My people need to hear what is true and make it their own.
I believe in one God,
      Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thank you for being one and thank you for your love for one another. Please help me, help your people live in the reality of your unity and love. Thank you.

and of all things visible and invisible;
      Father, we know that we are surrounded by your angelic hosts and that whole company of heaven, that cloud of witnesses that has gone before us. Help us to be steady in you till we reach that place of rest. Thank you.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
      Father, guide us by your Holy Spirit so that every other “lord” in our lives is brought under the sovereign rule of Jesus and he becomes our one Lord. Thank you.
the only begotten Son of God,
      Father, thank you for sending your one and only son to us so that we might become your children.
begotten of his Father before all worlds,
      Jesus, you have always been there; help us receive you into every part of our lives.

      Father, thank you for choosing Mary to bring Jesus to us. Help us to respond as she did.
being of one substance with the Father;
      Jesus, you came to us bearing the image of the Father so that we might know his love for us. You are one with him and there is no division between you. Please help us by your Holy Spirit to know the unity and character that you share with the Father.
by whom all things were made;
      Jesus, everything we have was made by you, there is nothing that we can have that we can call our own except for your cross and resurrection. It is all a free gift of yours; thank you.
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven,
      Jesus, thank you for being willing to give up the glory of heaven to come and live with us. Thank you that day by day your Holy Spirit is willing to live in us in the midst of all our sin.

and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;
      Thank you, Jesus, for what you endured on the cross for us.
he suffered and was buried;
      Jesus, thank you for dying for us while we were still sinners. You went to the cross and the grave for us because of your love for your father and for us. Thank you.
and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures,
      Holy Spirit, thank you that you enabled Jesus to rise from the dead. Thank you for his victory over sin and death. Please bring us to new life in him.
and ascended into heaven,
       Jesus, thank you for your ascension into heaven to sit at the right hand of your father. Thank you that you ever live to make intercession for us.
and sitteth on the right hand of the Father;
       Father, thank you for giving Jesus such a place of honor; please help us honor him by our words and deeds and belief.
and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead;
       Jesus, you are Lord and you are judge; help us to fall into your hands and not the hands of men.
whose kingdom shall have no end.
       Thank you, Jesus, for your endurance to the end on the cross. Thank you for establishing an eternal kingdom.
And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life,

       Holy Spirit, please help us know you, worship you, and glorify you.
who spake by the Prophets.
      Thank you for your word in Scripture and your words to us today.

I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins;
       Jesus, thank you for washing away my sins. Thank you for baptizing me with your Holy Spirit. Please help me to live day by day in the hope of the resurrection. Thank you.

Psalm 23

May 2, 2011

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. (Psalm 23:1)
      Shepherd of Israel, shepherd me.

He makes me to lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside the still waters. (Psalm 23:2)
      Jesus, help me to lie down and find my rest in you; help me to go where you lead.

He restores my soul; he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. (Psalm 23:3)
      Jesus, your ways are righteous and mine are not; lead me in your ways so that I will bring honor to your name.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4)
      Lord, I am growing older and the shadows lengthen; direct my path with your rod and staff — then I will need fear no evil.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. (Psalm 23:5)
      Jesus, my enemies are death and fear; help me sit down at your banqueting table in the presence of my enemies.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever. (Psalm 23:6)
      Jesus, please lead me to our Father’s house; guide me by your Holy Spirit so that I may daily know your goodness and mercy. Thank you.

Blow the Birds Point levee?

May 1, 2011

Apparently, one option to relieve some of the pressure in the Mississippi River may be to blow up this Missouri levee and intentionally flood two counties. The thought of the destruction brings tears to my eyes. Please pray for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mississippi Valley Division as they make painful decisions.

Psalm 121
A song of ascents.
1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The LORD watches over you—
the LORD is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

7 The LORD will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.

May it be so, dear Lord, for all those living along the Mississippi River.
