O Lord our Governor, whose glory is in all the world:
We commend this nation to thy merciful care, that, being guided by thy Providence, we may dwell secure in thy peace. Grant to the President of the United States, the Governor of this State (or Commonwealth), and to all in authority, wisdom and strength to know and to do thy will. Fill them with the love of truth and righteousness, and make them ever mindful of their calling to serve this people in thy fear; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

In 1948, the Israeli Proclamation of Independence flung wide the gates to the immigration of Jews from all countries of their dispersion. In Yemen lived the oldest Jewish community in the world, descendants of Jews who fled Jerusalem when destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar. Though kept as serfs by the local Moslem ruler, they could sing the psalms in ancient Hebrew and in Aramaic.
When news of Israel’s independence reached them, they were hesitant about leaving Yemen. However, on learning that the proposed method of transportation was an airlift, these people who had never seen an automobile recalled the words of Isaiah and agreed to go.

Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles . . .

Father,
We thank You that the word that goes forth from Your mouth does not return to You void but accomplishes what You purpose. Amen.

Mark 2:1-12

July 12, 2011

And again he entered Capernaum after some days, and it was heard that he was in the house. Immediately many gathered together, so that there was no longer room to receive them, not even near the door. And he preached the word to them. (Mark 2:1-2)
Jesus, preach the word to us.

Holy Spirit, come and infuse the preaching in this diocese with your power.

Father, let your word be set forth in clear and consistent preaching throughout this diocese.

Then they came to him, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men. (Mark 2:3)
Jesus, help us receive all the ill, the paralyzed, the epileptics that you send us.

And when they could not come near him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where He was. So when they had broken through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying. (Mark 2:4)
Holy Spirit, fill up our churches with people open to your word.

When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.” (Mark 2:5)
Holy Spirit, thank you for giving Jesus sight of their faith; help us find such faith in ourselves.

And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” (Mark 2:6-7)
Thank you, Jesus, for forgiving our sins.

But immediately, when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, he said to them, “Why do you reason about these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up your bed and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”–he said to the paralytic, “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” (Mark 2:8-11)
Jesus, thank you for your words of power. Anoint the healing ministry throughout this diocese so that all will know you have the power to forgive sins.

Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!” (Mark 2:12)
Father, help us give you glory for all that you are doing among us. Thank you.

Tammuz

July 12, 2011

Traditionally this month of the Hebrew calendar includes the anniversary of the golden calf. It is in Tammuz that many Jewish tragedies have taken place. In this month, Jerusalem was captured by Nebuchadnezzar (586 BCE)with destruction of the First Temple, Pompey (63 BCE), Roman general Apostomus (70 AD) with destruction of the Second Temple, and the Crusaders (1099 AD).

Psalm 122 Wycliffe
1 The song of degrees of David. I am glad in these things, that be said to me; We shall go into the house of the Lord. (The song of degrees for David. I was glad, when they said to me, We shall go to the House of the Lord.)

2 Our feet were standing; in thy halls/in thy foreyards, thou Jerusalem. (And now our feet stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.)

3 Jerusalem, which is builded as a city; whose partaking thereof is into the same thing. (Jerusalem is built to be a city, where people be together, yea, with one heart and mind.)

4 For the lineages, the lineages of the Lord, ascended thither, the witnessing of Israel; to acknowledge to the name of the Lord. (For the tribes, the Lord’s tribes, come there to give thanks to the Lord; that is Israel’s duty.)

5 For they sat there on seats in doom; seats on the house of David. (For the thrones of judgement, or of justice, be put there; yea, the thrones of the house of David.)

6 Pray ye those things, that be to the peace of Jerusalem; and abundance be to them that love thee. (Pray ye for the peace of Jerusalem; and say, May those who love thee prosper, or have great abundance.)

7 Peace be made in thy strength; and abundance in thy towers. (May there be peace within thy strongholds, or thy fortresses; and prosperity within thy palaces.)

8 For my brethren and my neighbours; I spake peace of thee. (For the sake of my brothers, or my kinsmen, and my neighbours; I say, Peace be with thee.)

9 For the house of our Lord God; I sought goods to thee. (For the sake of the House of the Lord our God; I shall seek thy good, or thy prosperity/I shall pray for good things for thee.)

1 Corinthians 13:1-13

July 11, 2011

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. (1 Corinthians 13:1)
Lord, let my speech be filled with your love.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:2)
Holy Spirit, I need your fruit (love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; see Galatians 5:22-23) in my life s well as your gifts. Help me grow into the man you want me to be.

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:3)
Father, help me have your love at work in my life.

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; (1 Corinthians 13:4)
Jesus, let your love be shown forth in my life.

does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; (1 Corinthians 13:5)
Holy Spirit, protect me from all evil thoughts.

does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; (1 Corinthians 13:6)
Father, help us throughout this diocese rejoice in the truth of the gospel.

bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. (1 Corinthians 13:7)
Jesus, give us your enduring strength.

Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. (1 Corinthians 13:8 )
Father, thank you for your unfailing love.

For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. (1 Corinthians 13:9-10)
Holy Spirit, help us recognize how partial our knowledge is while we wait for that which is perfect to come.

When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. (1 Corinthians 13:11)
Father, please help us put aside all childish ambitions and desires, and desire your maturity and character.

For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. (1 Corinthians 13:12)
Lord Jesus, please help me know myself as I am known by you.

And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13)
Holy Trinity, one God, help us daily abide in your faith, hope, and love. Thank you.

Breaching the walls

July 11, 2011

Today is the Hebraic commemoration of the Babylonian armies of King Nebuchadnezzar breaching the walls of Jerusalem (423 BCE). King Zedekiah of Judah was captured and taken to Babylon. Three weeks later the capture of Jerusalem was finished with the destruction of the Holy Temple and the exile of most Jews to Babylon.

Jeremiah 25:11-12 (NKJV)
And this whole land shall be a desolation and an astonishment, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
‘Then it will come to pass, when seventy years are completed, that I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity,’ says the LORD; ‘and I will make it a perpetual desolation.’

Daniel 9:2-3 (NKJV)
in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the LORD through Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.

We thank You, Father, that amongst the prophetic warnings of exile, You spoke words of redemption. Take our brokeness and speak words of hope. Declare deliverance in the midst of our bondage.
May Your seeds of hope fall into our spirits like seeds on good ground, yielding a hundredfold crop. Amen.

President Obama

July 11, 2011

O Lord,
Your eyes are upon the righteous, and Your ears are open to their cry. We thank You for the promises of Holy Scripture.
Raise up intercessors throughout our nation. Protect President Obama from physical and spiritual harm. We pray for Your kingdom to come and Your will to be done in the United States as it is in heaven. Amen.

The books of heaven: healing

July 10, 2011

Psalm 40:7-8 (ESV)
Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me:
I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”

Let this be written of us, dear Lord.

Psalm 56:8 (ESV)
You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?
Our lives are in Your hands, dear Lord.

Psalm 69:27-28 (ESV)
Add to them punishment upon punishment; may they have no acquittal from you. Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous.
We and our seed have been washed in the water of baptism, sealed with the mark of Christ, and covered in the Blood of the Lamb! We claim Your promise to remove our transgressions from us as far as the east is from the west. We are righteous!

Psalm 139:15-16(ESV)
My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance;in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.
We thank You for the gift of life, and we cry out for those born to illness, whether hereditary or environmental. We especially pray for Sally, Joseph, Lauren, Christy, Alan, Isabella, and Chris.
As high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is Your steadfast love toward those who fear You. If there are books of healing within the libraries and courts of heaven, then we lay claim to the release of heavenly healing words to alight on these children.
They have been baptized and sealed in Christ. There is no part of their bodies that is not covered by the Blood of the Lamb of God. There is no part of their souls that is not covered by the Blood of the Lamb of God. There is no part of their spirits that is not covered by the Blood of the Lamb of God. There is no part of their DNA, their birthrights, and their destinies that is not covered by the Blood of the Lamb of God.
They are Yours, Lord. Satan’s accusations against them have been rendered null and void by Jesus their Advocate.
Healing! Healing! Healing! Healing in every dimension and every realm, seen and unseen, natural and supernatural. Healing! Healing! Healing! Amen.

Bells

July 10, 2011

The bells of St. Mary the Virgin, Somerset, Emgland, may be heard here–three minutes.
The tune of the following bell ringers’ hymn is that of “Tell out my soul”. This hymn was composed by Peter Baelz, then Dean of Durham, for a service of re-dedication of the cathedral bells in 1980. Its opening verse contains the names of those bells.

Ring Christ, ring Mary, Benedict and Bede,
With Michael, till our hearts from sin be freed;
Ring Cuthbert, Oswald, Margaret and Hild,
Till, blessed Lord, our hearts with joy be filled.

Let bells peal forth the universal fame,
Creator Lord, of Thy mysterious name;
Conscience within, the boundless heavens above,
Disclose to faith the hidden name of Love.

Loudly proclaim with each insistent chime
How Thine eternity redeems our time;
Past sins forgiv’n, and future hopes restored,
Reveal Thy presence with us, gracious Lord.

Spirit divine, recast our faulty ways,
Make them ring true and echo to Thy praise;
Through every change of circumstance and choice
May we confess Thee with a single voice.

Call us to worship, call us to obey,
Call us to pilgrimage along life’s way;
Rouse us from sleep; renewed in mind and heart,
Call us to love Thee, Lord, since Love Thou art.

Matthew 13:3-9

July 10, 2011

Then he spoke many things to them in parables, saying: “Behold, a sower went out to sow.” (Matthew 13:3)
Jesus, sow your good seed in my life.

“And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them.” (Matthew 13:4)
Lord, so much of my life has been “wayside”. Even now redeem the lost opportunities of my life.

“Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away.” (Matthew 13:5-6)
Father, break up the stony places in my life. Let your word penetrate even those places.

“And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them.” (Matthew 13:7)
Holy Spirit, there are so many sins and thorns in my life that choke off growth in you — cover them all with the blood of Jesus.

“But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.” (Matthew 13:8 )
Lord Jesus, let the good soil in my life produce an abundant harvest for your kingdom.

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” (Matthew 13:9)
Holy Trinity, one God, give me ears to hear you speaking to me. Thank you.

Our Father in heaven,
You are good, a refuge in times of trouble. You care for those who trust in You.
The Pilgrims at Plymouth relied on prayer during their first and darkest winter. Our founding fathers also called for prayer during the Constitutional Congress. You have blessed our nation in more ways than we can know.
We pray that President Obama and Vice President Biden will turn to You and place their trust in You. Care for them and protect them from all assaults of the enemy as they lead our nation. Amen.

Mark 1:14-20

July 9, 2011

Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, (Mark 1:14)
Jesus, we pray for your witnesses who are in prison because they have been faithful to you: bless them, comfort them, and set them free.

and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15)
Holy Spirit, please help us know in our hearts that the time is fulfilled and the Kingdom of God is at hand. Help us repent and believe the gospel.

And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” (Mark 1:16-17)
Father, help all of us throughout this diocese follow Jesus and become fishers of men.

They immediately left their nets and followed Him. (Mark 1:18 )
Holy Spirit, please help us quickly find the freedom to leave to leave behind everything and follow Jesus.

When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets. And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him. (Mark 1:19-20)
Jesus, help us immediately answer your call.

2 Thessalonians 4:13-5:11

July 8, 2011

Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words. (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 )
“I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes–I, and not as a stranger. How my heart yearns within me!” (Job 19:25-27)

Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, (1 Thessalonians 5:1)
My times are in your hands; (Psalm 31:15a)

for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. (1 Thessalonians 5:2-3)
A word received: I AM with you.
Thank you, Jesus, that you will be with us through everything we must go through in life.

But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. (1 Thessalonians 5:4-5)
Jesus, please help us walk by your light.

So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. (1 Thessalonians 5:6-8 )
Father, please put on all of us the shoes of the preparation to share the gospel of peace; gird our loins with your truth; put on us the breastplate of righteousness, and the helmet of salvation. Place on our arm the shield of faith with which to quench every fiery dart of the evil one; and place in our hand the sword of your Spirit which is your word; that having stood all, we might yet stand. Finally, help us to be strong in Jesus and in the power of his might, and cast off from us the chains of apathy that keep us from speaking boldly as we ought to speak. Thank you. (See Ephesians 6:10-20)

For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. (1 Thessalonians 5:9-11)

A word received for Sunday School Lesson 11 11/23/2008:
I want you to tell the class of my faithfulness.
I was faithful in enabling Paul and Silas to bear the beating.
I was faithful in enabling them to sing hymns and songs of praise.
I was faithful in sending the earthquake to loose their chains.
I was faithful in keeping all of the other prisoners there.
I was faithful in bringing the jailer and his family to a saving knowledge of me.
I AM faithful in all things.

He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it. (1 Thessalonians 5:24)

We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. (Hebrews 6:19-20)

Will your anchor hold in the storms of life Lyrics
by William James Kirkpatrick

Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift or firm remain?

We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Stedfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.

It is safely moored, ’twill the storm withstand,
For ’tis well secured by the Savior’s hand;
And the cables passed from His heart to mine,
Can defy the blast, through strength divine.

It will firmly hold in the straits of fear,
When the breakers have told the reef is near;
Though the tempest rave and the wild winds blow,
Not an angry wave shall our bark o’erflow.

It will surely hold in the floods of death,
When the waters cold chill our latest breath;
On the rising tide it can never fail,
While our hopes abide within the veil.
