Israel

August 9, 2011

Today is Tisha be-Av, a day of fasting in the Jewish calendar. It marks the destruction of the first temple by the Babylonians in 580 BC and the second temple by the Romans in 70 AD.

Lamentations 2:13-14 (NLT)
What can I say about you?
Who has ever seen such sorrow?
O daughter of Jerusalem,
to what can I compare your anguish?
O virgin daughter of Zion,
how can I comfort you?
For your wound is as deep as the sea.
Who can heal you?

Your prophets have said
so many foolish things, false to the core.
They did not save you from exile
by pointing out your sins.
Instead, they painted false pictures,
filling you with false hope.

O God,
You alone are true. Fill the eyes of the nation of Israel with pictures of truth and their hearts with hope. Amen.

Acts 20:28 – 32

August 8, 2011

Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which he purchased with his own blood. (Acts 20:28 )
Jesus, you have paid our ransom with your own blood; move the heart of every shepherd in this diocese to faithfully oversee the flock entrusted to their care.

For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. (Acts 20:29)
Father, the flock is beset with savage wolves who are ravaging the flock; have mercy on us and send your holy angels to protect us.

Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. (Acts 20:30)
Holy Spirit, expose the perversion that is among us and wash us in your living waters.

Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears. (Acts 20:31)
Thank you, Jesus, for the tears and prayers and counsel of your faithful pastors in this diocese. Help us heed their guidance.

“So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.” (Acts 20:32)
Holy Father, thank you for your grace and the way you have built us up and given us an inheritance among the saints.

The writing on the wall

August 7, 2011

Thanks to Kendall Harmon for bringing to my attention Walter Russell Mead’s comparison of the nations of the world to Belshazzar in Daniel 5.

Daniel 5:22 (AMP)
And you his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart and mind, though you knew all this [knew it and were defiant].

El Elyon, God Most High,
We lift up our eyes to the heavens and give praise and honor and glory to You who lives forever. Your dominion is an everlasting dominion. Your kingdom endures from generation to generation. All the people of the earth are nothing compared to You. You are sovereign over the angel armies and the inhabitants of the earth.
O King of heaven, we praise, honor, and glorify You. All Your acts are just and true. You are able to abase those that walk in pride.
As a citizen of the United States of America, I confess my nation’s consumerism. In our greed for wealth and power, we have dissembled our budgetary confinements and disguised the truth. Our lust and pride have lied to our hearts and minds.
We have been poor stewards of the great bounty You have bestowed upon us. We cry out for mercy as You weigh us in the balance.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy. Amen.
Daniel 4:34-37

A response to The Response

August 7, 2011

The Response was held yesterday in Houston, Texas. Over 30,000 Christians of different denominations and races came together to pray and fast for our nation. Hundreds of thousands followed it on the Internet. There were four main prayer segments: personal repentance, corporate repentance for the sins of the church in America, the first commandment, and prayer for revival in America.
The Holy Spirit flowed through the bands, and the music carried the event. Most of the songs were familiar, but I wondered if a couple had been written for the occasion. Young people were everywhere, and their passion was palpable. They knelt on the floor in penitence, clapped rhythmically, danced and jumped to the music, processed around the stadium in joy. The sight of tens of thousands of hands uplifted in prayer was moving.
The event had been paid for by donors. There was no offering collection or sale of tickets or media.
There was no mention of Democrats, Republicans, debt ceiling, bond ratings, or lawsuits. The focus was on God and on the church in America.
Two governors appeared in person and one on video. They were simply Christians participating in a worship service.
Governor Rick Perry of Texas and Governor Sam Brownback of Kansas both read scriptures. Perry read Joel 2:12-17, Isaiah 40:28-31, and Ephesians 3:14-21; Brownback read 2 Chronicles 7:12-15 and Matthew 5:2-16. Governor Perry led a prayer; I can’t remember if Governor Brownback led a prayer or not. For me, the most heart-piercing moment was Governor Perry praying for our president and his family.
I thank God for The Response. Might I have done some things a little differently? Sure, but I am not going to quibble. This was an honorable and righteous action, one that we can all emulate. There is no reason why youth groups, ladies’ Bible studies, and men’s prayer breakfast groups of different denominations can’t come together. Pray and fast for our nation, dear people. Pray that the United States will be a light on a hill. –Jill Woodliff

Matthew 14:22-33

August 7, 2011

Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. Now when evening came, he was alone there. But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” (Matthew 14:22-27)
Come and meet us, Jesus, in the midst of our fears. Help us by your Holy Spirit to daily hear your word of comfort: “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”

And Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. (Matthew 14:28-32)
Father, please give us your enduring faith and strength. Thank you.

Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” (Matthew 14: 33)
Holy Spirit, help all your people throughout this diocese know you as the Son of God and worship you today.

A word received: Look to me — I AM waiting for you. My arms are open wide to you — so is my heart.

We station His table outside the Parish Hall for passers-by and for those entering the Hall for the free lunch. A reading from the Gospel of Mark and a short homily on the reading is also a part of our outreach at this weekly event. Deacon Alan Hart presiding today at His table.)

a-EDITH — She is a regular at the table. Today she asked for protection and provision for her nephew MARK, who is recently separated from his wife and has custody of the couple’s 4-year-old son. Also prayed for protection and abounding love from God for this young boy who has had such unhappiness handed to him at such an early age. Also we gave thanks for continued healing for her brother ROBERT and her sister GRACE, who are both cancer survivors. Edith also sought prayer for comfort and relief from arthritis which keeps her awake at night.

a,t,t — KATHY — First-time visitor to His table. She came with a female friend. First they asked if they could go inside the church and just look around. (“It looks so pretty from outside, so we wondered if it is pretty on the INSIDE, too,” Kathy explained.) After they came back outside complimenting about the inside, Kathy asked for prayer for her brother JOHN, that he could have healing and courage for a “journey” he is going through. Both women took a cross; the friend asked if she could donate some money to pay for the crosses, but it was explained to her that money and payment is ” … not what this is about.”

(An aside: During a lull, I offered prayer aloud for the success of the “Mission Night” event we are holding Tuesday at 7 p.m. at which recent missionaries Brittany Bala (Ireland) and Catie Love (South Africa) will offer their views on what they experienced on their respective missions. All are invited to come! May the night be a success in terms of attendance and also that it will bear fruit in the form of more people wanting to become missionaries — both outside our country as well as right here in Hadley-Luzerne. Amen.)

OLDER MAN (No name given) — He asked for prayer for his wife NANCY … “… for her many physical ailments from which she suffers.)

Mark 9:33-41

August 6, 2011

Then he came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What was it you disputed among yourselves on the road?” (Mark 9:33)
Holy Spirit, please help us bring all of our pride and sin to Jesus.

But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed among themselves who would be the greatest. (Mark 9:34)
Jesus, help us repent of seeking position and power– anything you have not called us to.

And he sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” (Mark 9:35)
Father, help us recognize what our real desires are and bring them to Jesus for his transforming touch.

Then he took a little child and set him in the midst of them. And when he had taken him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever receives one of these little children in my name receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.” (Mark 9:36-37)
Jesus, please help us receive all the little ones — the lost and the least — that you send to us.

Now John answered him, saying, “Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow us.” (Mark 9:38 )
Father, as we reach out in ministry to others, give us hearts to see beyond denominational differences and recognize everyone who knows you.

But Jesus said, “Do not forbid him, for no one who works a miracle in my name can soon afterward speak evil of me. For he who is not against us is on our side. For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.” (Mark 9:39-41)
Jesus, we pray that we will minister and live in the power of your name.

(Blessing adapted from the Anglican Christian community in Ceylon, Pakistan, and India:)
May the Name of Jesus, the Son of God, who is mightier than all the hosts of Satan, and more glorious than all the angels of heaven, abide with us in our going out and our coming in; by day and by night; at morning and at evening; at all times and in all places.
May the Name of Jesus, the Son of God, protect and deliver us from the wrath of evil persons; from the assaults of evil spirits; from foes invisible; from the snares of the Evil One; and from all low passions that beguile the soul and body.
May the Name of Jesus protect and deliver us.
And the blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit be with us this day and always. Amen.

For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit on your descendants, and my blessing on your offspring; (Isaiah 44:3)
LORD, pour your living water upon me, for I am thirsty. Flood the dry grounds of my life, pour out your Spirit upon our children and your blessing upon their children.

“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. and he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.” (Malachi 4:5-6)
Jesus, please send your prophets to minister in our communities and churches, for many of our fathers do not know their children and the children do not know their fathers. Teach the men in all our congregations and communities to be fathers. We have lost our way and we need your blessing.

Also in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came to them. For many in Judah were pledged to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shechaniah the son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah. Also they reported his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. Tobiah sent letters to frighten me. (Nehemiah 6:17-19)
A word received 11/5/2007: My people’s hearts are conflicted as they were in the days of Nehemiah. Pray for my people that they will cease to be double-minded, that their hearts will be fixed on me.

LORD, we pray for your people that they will cease to be double-minded, that their hearts will be fixed on you.

A word received: Look to me for help in the dark times.

A word received 12/4/2000: I want you to show my love for you: that I have kept you through many trials.

A word received 2/4/07: See my hearts desire for my people: teaching that comes from me in the churches, preaching that is good news, and healing of every sickness and every disease. That is what I did, that is what I taught my disciples to do, that is what I want my disciples now to do.

A word received 2/4/07: Pray for my people to see the baggage they carry with them — pray that they will see it for what it is and leave it behind. I AM. I AM calling my people to follow me — they are hindered by the baggage they bring with them.

Mark 9:22b-29

August 5, 2011

“But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” (Mark 9:22b)
Jesus, have compassion on us and help us.

Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” (Mark 9:23)
Jesus, we believe in you; help us in our hour of need and unbelief.

Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24)
Holy Spirit, move through this diocese with faith, hope and love. Help us believe all that Jesus and his father say to us. Thank you.

When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!” (Mark 9:25)
            A Prayer for Protection
            By Francis MacNutt
In the name of Jesus Christ and by the power of his Cross and his Bood, we bind up the power of any evil spirits and command them not to block our prayers. We bind up the powers of earth, air, water, fire, the netherworld and the satanic forces of nature.
We break any curses, hexes or spells sent against us and declare them null and void. We break the assignments of any spirits sent against us and send them to Jesus to deal with them as he will. Lord we ask you to bless our enemies by sending your Holy Spirit to lead them to repentance and conversion.
Furthermore, we bind all interaction and communication in the world of spirits as it affects us and our ministry.
We ask for the protection of the shed blood of Jesus Christ over this diocese and the ministries which take place here.
Thank you, Lord, for your protection and send your angels, especially St. Michael, the Archangel to help us in the battle. We ask you to guide us in our prayers, share with us your Spirit’s power and compassion. Amen.

Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, “He is dead.” (Mark 9:26)
Father, help us to see with eyes of faith.

But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. (Mark 9:27)
Jesus, take us into your arms and lift us up.

And when he had come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” (Mark 9:28 )
Holy Spirit, show us how to have your power at work in the ministry you have given us.

So he said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.” (Mark 9:29)
Father, bring us into a life of spiritual discipline in this diocese. Thank you.

A word received: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
Father, I pray for the peace of Jerusalem. May they prosper that love you. Peace be inside your city walls and prosperity within your palaces. And for the sake of my brothers and companions, I will say, “Peace be with you, Jerusalem.” Because of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek to do you good. (See Psalm 122:6-9)

Mark 9:7 and Acts 19:11-20

August 4, 2011

And a cloud came and overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved son. Hear him!” (Mark 9:7)
Father, give us ears and hearts to hear what Jesus is saying to us. Help us to hearken to his word to us. Thank you.

Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. (Acts 19:11-17)
Jesus, we are in a war zone and we have no power of ourselves, nor can we use your name as though it was some kind of magic formula. Help us to so know you, that when we call upon your name we know whom we are speaking of.

And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds. Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver. So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed. (Acts 19:18-20)
Holy Spirit, set us free from all occult practices. Bring us all to a saving knowledge of Jesus. Thank you.

A word received: Pray for my righteousness to be manifested in this diocese.

The roads to Jerusalem

August 3, 2011

In the Hebraic calendar, we are in a somber season. The Three Weeks or Between the Straits is taken from the verse, “All her (Judah’s) persecutors overtook her in dire straits.”

Lamentations 1:4a (NIV)
The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to her appointed festivals. All her gateways are desolate.

Matthew 21:8-9 (NIV)
A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

All creation sings, O God, of Your beautiful, glorious, magnificent plan of redemption. If we kept quiet, even the stones would cry out.

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!”

Mark 8:34-9:1

August 3, 2011

When he had called the people to himself, with his disciples also, he said to them, “Whoever desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” (Mark 8:34)
Holy Spirit, please help me deny myself and daily take up the cross of Christ.

“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.” (Mark 8:35)
Lord, we can only keep what we are willing to give away. Help me daily lose my life for your sake and for the sake of the gospel.

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” (Mark 8:36)
Lord Jesus, there is so much striving and chasing after the wind (Ecclesiastes 5:16) and there is no profit in it. Many have gained the world and lost their souls. Have mercy on us and bring us back to you.

“Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Mark 8:37)
None of us by any means can redeem himself or his brother, nor give God a ransom for him. For the redemption of our souls is costly and can only be done through the blood of Jesus Christ. (See Psalm 49:7-8 )

“For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” (Mark 8:38 )
Holy Spirit, give us the courage and the opportunity each day to proclaim Jesus as the Christ.

And he said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power.” (Mark 9:1)
Father, we long to see your kingdom established in our lives and in your church. Thank you.

A word received: Look to me. I AM a sure and steady guide.

Thanksgiving

Congress has passed a debt-ceiling bill, and President Obama has signed it.

USA–debt ceiling crisis

Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The LORD be magnified. Psalm 40:16 KJV

O Lord,
You are a holy God and worthy to be praised. Stir in Your children who reside in the United States of America a spirit of praise today. Bring to their awareness forgotten hymns. Let new hymns be written. May there be a sound of song magnifying Your holy name over the entire nation, a sound that fills the air, a life-giving sound.
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord. Amen.

Our Heavenly Father,
We thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to pay the debt for our sins. Jesus is the light of the world. He is the bright morning star.
Jesus was made man. In humility, He was obedient, even to death on a cross. For this reason, God has given Him the name that is greater than any other name, including all idols of the sun and sky and all idols of false enlightenment. At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow. Jesus is sovereign over Washington, D. C. and the United States of America.
We cry out for the members of Congress. May they seek Jesus in humility. May the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in His wings. May they invite Jesus to shine into their souls as they debate and cast their votes. Amen.
Malachi 4:2, Luke 11:34-36, Philippians 2, Revelation 22:16

Then there was war in heaven. Michael and the angels under his command fought the dragon and his angels. Revelation 12:7 NLT

Dear Heavenly Father,
Satan has come into this world to kill, to steal, and to destroy. He is the Father of lies. We humbly beseech You to commission Michael and the angels under his command to the United States of America during this debt ceiling debate. We claim the power of the sword of the Spirit to open a gateway over Washington, D. C. for Your holy angels to ascend and descend. May they counteract the forces of death, theft, and destruction. May the lies be revealed. Guard and protect those saints who are Satan’s targets. We humbly ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

For they got not the land [of Canaan] in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them; but Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your countenance [did it], because You were favorable toward and did delight in them. Psalm 44:3 AMP

O God,
We do not conquer by our own devices or win by our own strength. It is only by Your power, Your strength, and the assurance of Your presence. Be present to Your servants working in Congress and love them. With You, all things are possible. We cry out for mercy and call for Your strength and Your presence over this nation. Amen.

There is only one who is wise, and we must stand in awe before his throne. The Lord himself created Wisdom: he saw her and recognized her value, and so he filled everything he made with Wisdom. He gave some measure of Wisdom to everyone, but poured her out on those who love him. Wisdom is given to the faithful in their mothers’ wombs. Ecclesiasticus 1:8-10, 14b

You alone are wise, O Lord. We stand in awe before Your throne. We thank You for the gift of Wisdom, given to us in our mothers’ wombs. We confess the sin of abortion in our nation and beg for mercy. Have mercy, Lord. Have mercy. Amen.

“Salvation comes from the LORD.”
And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
Jonah 2:9b-10 NIV

Our Father,
Salvation comes from You. We trust in Your mercy. Our hearts rejoice at Your salvation. We humbly ask You to arise and protect our nation in the debt ceiling crisis today. As intercessors, we are standing in the gap for this land! Come to our aid! Amen.
Psalm 12:5, 13:5; Jonah 2:9b-10

Acts 18:9-10

August 1, 2011

Now the Lord spoke to Paul in the night by a vision, “Do not be afraid, but speak, and do not keep silent; for I am with you, and no one will attack you to hurt you; for I have many people in this city.” (Acts 18:9-10)
Holy Spirit, help us set aside all baseless fears and speak boldly as we ought to speak. Encourage us each day with your words of comfort — help us look to Jesus rather than to the people who would oppose us. Help us know in our hearts that we are surrounded by that great cloud of witnesses — those who have gone before and those who yet remain in the body. Thank you for sharing the Father’s love with us each day.

A word received: Pray for my little ones.
