The Lord’s Prayer

September 15, 2011

OUR Father, which art in heaven,
Father, thank you for being a true father for us.

Jesus, thank you for making your father our father

Holy Spirit, help us daily enter into your life in the Trinity.

Hallowed be thy Name.
Jesus, help us each day to keep the name of your father holy.

Thy kingdom come.
Father, we want to know and live into the life of your kingdom.

Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven.
Holy Spirit, show forth your power and your fruit in our lives so that the Father’s will is done in and through us.

Give us this day our daily bread.

Jesus, help us feed on you week by week.

And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us.
Lord Jesus, forgiveness is a two-way street. Help us, as you did on the cross, forgive those who had wronged you.

And lead us not into temptation,
Holy Spirit, guide our steps day by day on our pilgrimage through this life.

But deliver us from evil.
Father, set us free from every evil that the tempter would bring our way. Help us walk as your true sons and daughters in the light of your son, Jesus.

For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.
Give light to those that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,, to guide their feet into the way of peace. Amen.

            A Prayer of St. Chrysostom.
ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee; and dost promise, that when two or three are gathered together in thy Name thou wilt grant their requests; Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

            2 Corinthians 13.
THE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

A word received: Pray for my transforming power in this nation.

Matthew 4:13-20

September 14, 2011

And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: (Matthew 4:13-14)
Jesus, let the words of your prophets come alive for your people.

“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: (Matthew 4:15)
Holy Spirit, come and visit your people in the Diocese of Albany as well.

The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” (Matthew 4:16)
Father, so many sit in darkness and in bondage to death, let your light dawn throughout this diocese. Help us to see by your light.

From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17)
Holy Spirit, help the leaders and teachers of the Episcopal Church gathered for the House of Bishops meeting hear Jesus’ call to repent and acknowledge that the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:18-19)
Jesus, please help each of us in our several callings to respond to your invitation to follow you. Transform our work lives so that our work draws others to you.

They immediately left their nets and followed him. (Matthew 4:20)
Holy Spirit, give to each of us this same immediacy of response to Jesus’ call to us.

A word received: Pray that I will be a rock and refuge for my people. Pray that my people will come to me for safety in the storm.

Grace and Peace be with you all -
Thank you for your prayers for all the people displaced. lives turned upside down by the natural events/disasters of the past several months, not the least the NY struggles with flooding. Since the Haiti Earthquake and Japanese Tsunami, we have been called to prayer in nearly every corner of the globe. It is easy to become ‘fatigued’ in the flesh by all of the demands upon us and those immediately affected. Fortunately, it is otherwise for our human spirit, filled with and strengthened by the Holy Spirit – guide, chief strategist and comforter among other things.
At the bottom of this note is a newsletter from Bishop Abraham of Aweil Province Southern Sudan, forwarded to me as a supporter of Fran Boyle of The Falls Church in VA, and the strong link of mission Fran has to the Sudanese. Some of you who were part of the Albany relationship with CMS-Ireland and have met Fran. The word from South Sudan is important for us, even as we face challenges at home. I hope you will read on and keep the concerns in prayer.
Hopefully you have received word of the various diocesan mission efforts, such as the Haiti benefit which had to be rescheduled; the Appalachian Mission trip, and the return of Fr Shaw and Mtr Julie Mudge from Peru. All to be kept in prayer please!
God bless you. See you soon. Susan Baker-Borjeson

Letter from Bishop Abraham of Southern Sudan to the Anglican churches:
Subject: THANKSGIVING AND PRAYERS NEEDED
Date: Wed, 7 Sep 2011 12:18:19 -0400
Dear All,
I write this email with thanksgiving in my heart, thanking Almighty God for answering our cry and prayers for our suffering in South Sudan, because of His helps we are now a new nation in the world today. We will continue praising His Holy Name for His goodness to us. Also I want to acknowledge your dedicated prayers and support to us is something to pass on to the next generations to know, without your support we would not make it. Thanks to you all for helping us to cross the river.
Moreover, I am asking you all in this email lists and your churches to continue praying for people of Southern Kordofan (Nuba Mountain), Abyei, Darfur, Blue Nile, and Beja. Some of these people group I mentioned above are been killed because they refuse to be “Arabized” and “Islamized.” We need your prayers too for the conflicts in Jongeli State, Lake State, Warrap State, among tribes and within tribe so that God of peace intervene in fighting communities.
Another serious disaster happened in Agok where most of displaced people in Abyei are now staying, few days ago Agok is flooded which again, displaced many people to live on the streets. Furthermore, the situation in South Sudan is not good as many of returnees and those who were remain at home are perished due to the fact that most of our food use to come from the north but now the roads to South Sudan are blocked by the northern government. We need your prayers and support to rescue the innocents people.
At this crucial time in the building our nation the church have a role in bring change in the thinking and attitude of people’s culture of war to culture of peace otherwise, the developments will not come to exist in the South and North Sudan and both countries will suffer a lot. The Gospel of peace must be preach in all corners of South and North Sudan for God’s people to live together. Jesus is our peace!
Yours faithfully in Christ’s service, Bishop Abraham Yel Nhial

Psalm 95

September 13, 2011

      Venite, exultemus Domino.
            Psalm 95.

O COME, let us sing unto the Lord * let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.
Jesus, it is your strength and the power of your Holy Spirit that brings us to salvation. Thank you.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving * and show ourselves glad in him with Psalms.
I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.” (Psalm 122:1)
For the Lord is a great God * and a great King above all gods.
Father, thank you for your greatness; help us daily come into your presence with praise and thanksgiving.
In his hand are all the corners of the earth * and the strength of the hills is his also.
Even more, Father, I am in your hands and you are my enduring strength.
The sea is his, and he made it * and his hands prepared the dry land.
Lord, we have polluted and abused the land and the sea which you have made; have mercy on us and help us repent of this.
O come, let us worship and fall down * and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
Holy Spirit, help us daily humble ourselves before the Father and know that we are his.
For he is the Lord our God * and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.
Jesus, I was lost and you found me and brought me into the flock. Thank you.
Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts * as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness;
LORD, your people provoked Moses, your saint, to sin against you. Help us restrain ourselves that we do not provoke our pastors and shepherds to sin.
When your fathers tempted me * proved me, and saw my works.
Jesus, we are our father’s children and are just as capable of sin as they were. Move us by the power of your Holy Spirit into the new life you desire for us.
Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said * It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways.
Father, we too are part of such a generation: we need only look at the state of the Episcopal Church to see that we have strayed from your ways like lost sheep. Guide Bishop Bill and the other bishops assemble for their meeting in Quito.
Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.
Jesus, help us count the cost of our sin and help us make those choices that will lead us into your rest. Thank you.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son * and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be * world without end. Amen.

A word received: Don’t be afraid. Keep looking to me.

Wait for the Lord

September 13, 2011

Psalm 27:14 (ESV)
Wait for the LORD
Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me,and lead me in the way everlasting. (Ps 139:23-24)
Be strong,
Intertwine Your strength into mine, Lord. A threefold cord is not easily broken. (Eccl 4:12)
And let your heart take courage;
Write Your mercy and Your truth upon the tablets of my heart that I may find favor and approval in the eyes of God and humanity. (Prov 3:3-4)
Wait for the LORD!
They who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength;they shall mount up with wings like eagles;they shall run and not be weary;they shall walk and not faint. (Is 40:31)

Israel–Iran

September 12, 2011

From Fox:

Benjamin Netanyahu spoke at a memorial Sunday marking the anniversary of the attacks in the U.S.

In the speech, he repeated a long-standing plea to the world to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Israel considers Iran a serious threat because of its nuclear program, support for anti-Israel militants and frequent references to Israel’s destruction.

Netanyahu said the “the possibility that the world’s most dangerous weapons will fall into the hands of the world’s most dangerous regimes is too real.”

Psalm 27:1,11-14 (NIV)
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?
11 Teach me your way, LORD;
lead me in a straight path
because of my oppressors.
12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes,
for false witnesses rise up against me,
spouting malicious accusations.
13 I remain confident of this:
I will see the goodness of the LORD
in the land of the living.
14 Wait for the LORD;
be strong and take heart
and wait for the LORD.

May it be so for Israel, dear Lord. Amen.

Psalm 57:1-3

September 12, 2011

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me! For my soul trusts in you; (Psalm 57:1a)
O God, grant me your mercy, for I am a weak and sinful man.

And in the shadow of your wings I will make my refuge, until these calamities have passed by. (Psalm 57:1b)
Jesus, how often you have desired to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings and we would not (See Matthew 23:37). Help us now repent and find our shelter and refuge in the shadow of your wings.

I will cry out to God Most High, to God who performs all things for me. (Psalm 57:2)
Father, in your mercy help me to do what I cannot. Help me daily recognize my need for your help.

He shall send from heaven and save me; he reproaches the one who would swallow me up. od shall send forth his mercy and his truth. (Psalm 57:3)
Holy Spirit, come and fill my heart with your mercy and truth.

A word received: Pray for my people to let go of the burden of resentment and not forgiving others who have wronged them.

The exuberant earth

September 12, 2011

Psalm 27:13 (MSG)
I’m sure now I’ll see God’s goodness in the exuberant earth.

Fissured lava, alluvial fan,
Amphibolite, biotite, bedrock, and sand–
Manifest God’s glory, exuberant earth.

Caves, sinkholes, karst, and kettle,
Kimberlite pipes and quicksilver metal–
Exalt His name! Reveal His glory!
Show His goodness and tell His story.

Israel–Egypt

September 11, 2011

Over the weekend, hundreds of Egyptians storm building housing Israel’s mission. All of Israel’s emissaries to Cairo – including six security guards who were holed up behind a metal door in the embassy and extracted by Egyptian commandos – returned to Israel on Saturday, with the exception of one diplomat who will remain to represent Israel in the Egyptian capital.

Psalm 27:5 and Psalm 91:1-4(NKJV)
For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion;
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
In the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me;
I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”
He shall set me high upon a rock.
Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.

Thank You, Father, for their safety. Amen.

Matthew 18:21-35

September 11, 2011

Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made.” (Matthew 18:21-25)
Holy Father, help us acknowledge the magnitude of our debt of sin to you.

“The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, ‘Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’” (Matthew 18:26)
Holy Spirit, help us acknowledge our wretched state and our need for forgiveness.

“Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.” (Matthew 18:27)
Jesus, thank you for your cross and blood shed on it for us. By your wounds we are forgiven and made whole.

“But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’ So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’ And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay the debt. So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done. Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?’ And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. “So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.” (Matthew 18:28-35)
“OUR Father, … forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us.” Restore to us your people that sure and certain knowledge that our forgiveness is directly tied up with our willingness to forgive others.

A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation after the Minister, all kneeling.
ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father; We have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, who confess their faults. Restore thou them that are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.
The Absolution, or Remission of sins, to be pronounced by the Priest alone, standing; the people still kneeling.
ALMIGHTY God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness, and live; and hath given power, and commandment, to his Ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the Absolution and Remission of their sins : He pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent, and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel. Wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance, and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him, which we do at this present; and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure, and holy; so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 18:14 (NKJV)
He sent out His arrows and scattered the foe,
Lightnings in abundance, and He vanquished them.

Our Father in heaven,
We come before You in humility. As a nation, we have fallen short of Your glory. You called us to be a light on a hill, and we have exported arms and smut.
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
You blessed us with great riches, and we have ignored the cries of the poor.
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Jerusalem is the apple of Your eye, and we have pressured Israel to divide it.
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Yet, Father, many citizens in the United States do live in righteousness and help the poor and bless Israel. The foundational covenants of our nation acknowledge You.
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Father, grant us Your favor. Let the counsel of the wicked be spoiled. Scatter these bloodthirsty men by Your power, and bring them down, O Lord our shield. We come up under the blood covenant of Jesus Christ and cry out
–that every word curse, every curse of witchcraft, sorcery, and every form of unconventional warfare resulting from human and demonic origin be broken off of our nation.
–that every form and plot of terrorism be unraveled and discovered.
–that every weapon formed to use against us will not fire; every form of guerrilla warfare be discovered and rendered powerless.
–that every weapon formed of atomic, nuclear, viral, bacterial and other weapons of mass destruction fail.
–that every form of technological and computer warfare attempted to bring implosion and destruction upon our firewall systems and infrastructure fail.
–that justice be executed against the terrorists.
Job 12:17, Psalm 59:11b

Praise God, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts!
Father in heaven, we join our voices with the hosts of heaven and say

Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD! Hosanna in the highest!

Bless the LORD, you His angels, Who excel in strength, who do His word, heeding the voice of His word.

Father in heaven, we pray, stir the hearts of the faithful to read aloud Your Holy Word.

Praise Him who makes His angels spirits, His ministers a flame of fire.

Father in heaven, we humbly beseech You, send forth Your angels in power and might.
Amen.

Philippians 4:4-7

September 10, 2011

Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! (Philippians 4:4)
Holy Spirit, thank you for the joy you bring us.

Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. (Philippians 4:5)
Jesus, you are there with us, even in the times of darkness and anger. Help us to be gentle as you are gentle. Thank you.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; (Philippians 4:6)
Father, help us to be still and know that You Are. Help us to lay aside all anxiety and turn to you in prayer, hope and expectation.

and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7)
Jesus, bring us through to that place of peace and rest where every burden is laid at the foot of your cross. Thank you.

Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on his faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the LORD, and he shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret–it only causes harm. For evildoers shall be cut off; but those who wait on the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; indeed, you will look carefully for his place, but it shall be no more. But the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. (Psalm 37:1-11)

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name. Amen. (BCP, page 101)

Terrorism threat

September 9, 2011

From Reuters:

The United States has credible but unconfirmed information about a possible terrorism threat surrounding the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, a U.S. official told Reuters on Thursday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Isaiah 54:17 (NKJV)
No weapon formed against you shall prosper,
And every tongue which rises against you in judgment
You shall condemn.
This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD,
And their righteousness is from Me,”
Says the LORD.

Our Father in heaven,
Though we are a nation of many different races and ideologies, through the prayers of the righteous, we are one nation under God. The righteous are standing in the gap! The righteous are calling out! The righteous are standing in their heritage as servants of the Lord!
You are our sure defense. You are our shield and buckler. You are our strong tower. You quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
May Your holy angels go out in power and might. Amen.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

O Lord,
If only we could love as You! Your love is steadfast; ours is mercurial. Your love overflows with tender mercies; ours is riddled with unforgiveness. Holy is Your name. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord!
We ask You to love the leaders of our nation, of all political parties. Bless President Barak Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden. Bless their families and their staffs. You know their needs. Bless them, Lord, in Your infinite wisdom. Bless them in Your judgment. Bless them in Your mercy. Amen.
