South Dakota–Francis Sayre

The Very Rev. Francis B. Sayre Jr. (1915 — 2008) was Dean of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. for 27 years.

Red man, white man,
Who shall sing for thee
Of the great ocean of grass, thy tawny home?
Of badland draws and lookout hills?
Of coyotes and bison and friendly beasts of the barn?

Hark, O Lord, the night chant of the Sioux,
The rising hymn of settlers hope,
The prayer Thy people make upon the Dakota plain;

That they may grow in peace and goodness
Until Thy praises resound in every heart;

through Christ our Lord. Amen.
