Revelation 7:9-12

December 20, 2011

After these things I looked, (Revelation 7:9a)
      LORD, give us eyes to see.

and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, (Revelation 7:9b)
      Jesus, we want to be in that company of your saints.

of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, (Revelation 7:9c)
      Holy Spirit, help us see beyond our borders, to see how vast your church is.

standing before the throne and before the Lamb, (Revelation 7:9d)
      Jean, you are the Lamb of God and we worship you.

clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, (Revelation 7:9e)
      Father, clothe us in the righteousness that comes from Jesus and help us sing, “Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Hosanna in the highest!” (Matthew 21:9)

and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” (Revelation 7:10)
      Jesus, yours is the name that is above every name and there is no other name by which we can be saved.

All the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, (Revelation 7:11)
      Father, help us join you angels and archangels and all the company of heaven in worshiping you.

saying: “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom, thanksgiving and honor and power and might, be to our God forever and ever. Amen.” (Revelation 7:12)
      Amen!

A word received: Pray for my blessing and peace.

      On the highway you will see signs. Stop signs, yield signs, do not pass signs, caution signs. You will even see, on some very large construction trucks, a “do not follow” sign! So it is on the highway of life. Pay attention to the signs. Get in the right lane. Slow lane for slow driving, the passing lane when you need to go faster. The key, pull off now and again and rest. Is God saying to you; the highway, the byway, or my way?

Luke 1:13-17

December 19, 2011

But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.” (Luke 1:13-14)
      Jesus, bring the joy of the new life you offer us into the lives of the families of this diocese.

“For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.” (Luke 1:15)
      Holy Spirit, help many to hear your call and experience your anointing to live a devout and holy life. Raise up vocations to the Sisters of St. Mary, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, the Franciscans of the Holy Cross, and the Daughters of the King.

“And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.” (Luke 1:16)
      Father, raise up witnesses throughout this diocese that will turn many back to you, the Lord our God.

“He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ (Malachi 4:5-6) and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” (Luke 1:17)
      Jesus, send forth witnesses in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make us a people prepared for you. Thank you.

Oh, how great is your goodness, which you have laid up for those who fear you, which you have prepared for those who trust in you in the presence of the sons of men! You shall hide them in the secret place of your presence from the plots of man; you shall keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues. (Psalm 31:19-20)

Subject: The Tear Drop…
      Yesterday there was a single tear drop on the paten as I celebrated the Holy Eucharist before the staff and volunteers Christmas party. It was located at the farthest point in front of me. Was it your tear Lord? A single tear drop at the loss of life for those who died in the Iraqi war as the last troops left Iraq yesterday. The Bible writes, “Peace on earth and goodwill to mankind.” Will we see this peace in our lifetime Jesus?

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Ephesians 2:4-6 ESV

Let Israel rejoice

December 18, 2011

Ezekiel 36:24-28 interposed with Psalm 149:2-4 (NKJV)
For I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land.
Let Israel rejoice in their Maker;
Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols.
Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you;
Let them praise His name with the dance;
I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
Let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp.
I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
For the LORD takes pleasure in His people;
Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers;
He will beautify the humble with salvation.
You shall be My people, and I will be your God.

Matthew 25:31-40 and Sunday School Lesson

December 17, 2011

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory.” (Matthew 25:31)
      Jesus, thank you that week by week we get glimpses of your glory in the bread and the wine. Thank you for inviting us to the wedding feast.

“All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And he will set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.” (Matthew 25:32-33)
      Holy Spirit, please help the leaders and teachers and people of the Episcopal Church and of this nation know that we are but men and that you will judge us and separate us at the end.

“Then the King will say to those on his right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:” (Matthew 25:34)

      For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” (Romans 8:14-15)

      Jesus, we long to hear your words of blessing.

      Father, thank you for giving us your Spirit of adoption so that we can know you as our father.

      Holy Spirit, lead us day by day.

“for I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you took me in; I was naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you visited me; I was in prison and you came to me.’” (Matthew 25:35-36)
      Holy Spirit, please give us eyes to see and hearts to respond to those in need. Help us hear and see the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick, and those in prison.

“Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?” (Matthew 25:37)

      But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. (Isaiah 64:6)

      Father, we have no righteousness of our own — ours is as filthy rags in your sight. Thank you for the righteousness you give us through the blood of your son Jesus.

“When did we see you a stranger and take you in, or naked and clothe you? Or when did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you?’” (Matthew 25:38-39)

      What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. (James 2:14-18 )

      Father, mold us by your hands so that we will see and hear the lost and the least.

“And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.’” (Matthew 25:40)
      Jesus, please help us daily be doers of your word, and not hearers only. (See James 1:22) Help us daily show forth our faith in you by the works we do. Bring us to the obedience that comes from true faith in you. Thank you.

      But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you our potter; and all we are the work of your hand. (Isaiah 64:8 )

Subject: My friend Canon Andrew White is commended in the House of Lords. Baroness Cox is mentioned in the article.
Dear friends,
      LORDS DEBATING PLIGHT OF CHRISTIANS IN MIDDLE EAST REPEATEDLY COMMEND WORK OF CANON ANDREW WHITE.
      On Friday, an entire day in the House of Lords was devoted to discussing the plight of Christians in the Middle East. A total of nine of their Lordships praised the work of Canon Andrew White in their speeches.
      FRRME Director, Peter Marsden, listened to the debate.
      The debate was introduced by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams with the words; “My Lords, many people these days have a short and skewed historical memory. It is all too easy to go along with the assumption that Christianity is an import to the Middle East rather than an export from it.”
      I couldn’t help but think of Andrew’s comic descriptions of “The miserable evangelists to Iraq”, Jonah and Doubting Thomas. Iraq has indeed a long history of worshipping the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
      Lord Mackay was first to respond, saying:
      ”Today I want particularly to mention the position of Canon Andrew White as the vicar of Baghdad. He has played a very important part in maintaining Christian witness in Iraq under extremely difficult circumstances.”
      Speaking of time spent with Andrew in Israel, he recalled, “I have to say that the relationships he had with people from right across the community were very remarkable. He has shown in more recent times a fine example of Christian fortitude in the troubles that now beset Iraq.
      ”I wish particularly to pay tribute to Andrew White’s work and I hope that he will be able to continue for a long time in his office.”
      This was greeted with cries of “Hear! Hear!” from the 80 Lords in the chamber.
      Lord Patten urged both their Lordships and the Government to act in response to religious persecution, saying, “There can be no walking on the other side of this road, even in the Palace of Westminster. I hope that our secular leaders in the coalition will restate religious freedom as a human right.”
      Lord Turnberg and Lord Palmer commended Andrew’s work, Lord Alton spoke of his “indomitable spirit and incredible courage” and Baroness Cox paid tribute to “his magnificent work in Iraq, especially in improving interfaith relations”.
      Lord Carey praised Andrew’s “remarkable work [as] one of the key players in the Alexandria Declaration” bringing together parties for the religious track of the Israel Palestine peace process. He went on to state that Andrew “is currently making a powerful contribution to harmony in Iraq and the Middle East.”
      Lord Hylton spoke at length about “my friend Canon Andrew White” and the work with the High Council of Religious Leaders in Iraq. “Lives have undoubtedly been saved as a result.”
      The Minister of State, Lord Howell, stated that, in the view of the Government, religious freedom is a basic human right. He confirmed Government support for the Alexandria Declaration and “the High Council of Religious Leaders in Iraq, which seeks to bring together religious leaders and combat sectarian violence, and of course to continue the invaluable work of Canon Andrew White.”
      Lord Howell concluded:
      I end my comments by saying that, unlike Mr Richard Dawkins, I have faith in the faiths. We will continue to highlight and condemn all instances of violence and discrimination against individuals because of their beliefs, wherever they occur.
      Archbishop Rowan Williams wound up the debate by thanking their Lordships for their high calibre contributions to the debate and observed, “Not the least among those was the admiration widely expressed for the work of Canon Andrew White in Baghdad, and I am happy to associate myself with that admiration.”
      When I spoke with Andrew afterwards, he said:
      ”It was wonderful that the House of Lords debated this issue and took seriously the plight of Christians in the Middle East. What really matters is that we must make sure that the political world gets behind the religious means of working at reconciliation. This is the only hope for all minorities in the Middle East.”
      In characteristic form, he went on to talk about his beloved St George’s.
      ”As usual, this Sunday was wonderful here in Baghdad. On Saturday we were joined by four very important people from “Open Doors” in Holland. They are one of the world’s foremost charities serving persecuted Christians across the globe.
      ”Unfortunately, despite having visas from the Iraqi Embassy in Holland they were refused entry to Iraq and were threatened with deportation. As soon as we heard this we immediately started liaising with the government at the highest level. Three hours later we got them in.
      ”We have worked very hard with Open Doors in the last two days, dining with Yonadam Kanna and Sargon Slewa the two highest Iraqi Government Christians and meeting other religious and political leaders. They were so surprised and delighted to see how developed our church complex was, with its clinic, school and Mothers Union. This was highlighted even more when we paid visits to other churches which unfortunately have very limited facilities.
      ”To me, it just demonstrated how incredibly blessed we are by the Almighty and how we all totally rely on Him.”
      Wishing you every blessing, Peter Marsden, Director, The Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East (FRRME)

Hannah-Psalmist duet

December 16, 2011

Updated–JW
What an awesome mystery how the prayers and radical trust of a persecuted slave family (Moses’) and a persecuted barren wife (Hannah) were pivotal for the nation of Israel. (The scripture doesn’t say that Moses’ family prayed for his survival. Since they were Levites, I believe it a safe assumption.) The course of history was changed in the crucible of the anguished prayer of the lowly. “Let us not despise the day of small things.” (Zechariah 4:10a)
There are parallels in the actions of Moses’ and Samuel’s parents–anguished prayer, receiving and then reliquishing that which they most earnestly coveted. Somehow that sequence was key to changing the history of the nation.
In her prophetic proclamation, Hannah says, The barren has borne seven. Hannah bore six children. Looking at this through a Christologic lens, might the seventh have been Jesus?
This duet interposes Hannah’s prophetic proclamation (1 Samuel 2) with praise for God’s holiness (Psalm 99). In the middle, I inserted the Moses and Samuel infant scriptures (Exodus 2:2-3 and 1 Samuel 1:20,27,28).

The LORD reigns; Let the peoples tremble!
My heart rejoices in the LORD;
My horn is exalted in the LORD.
I smile at my enemies,
Because I rejoice in Your salvation.

He dwells between the cherubim;
No one is holy like the LORD,
For there is none besides You.

Let the earth be moved!
Nor is there any rock like our God.
The LORD is great in Zion,
And He is high above all the peoples.
Talk no more so very proudly;
Let no arrogance come from your mouth,
For the LORD is the God of knowledge;
And by Him actions are weighed.
The bows of the mighty men are broken,
And those who stumbled are girded with strength.
Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread,
And the hungry have ceased to hunger.
Even the barren has borne seven,
And she who has many children has become feeble.
The LORD kills and makes alive;
He brings down to the grave and brings up.
The LORD makes poor and makes rich;
He brings low and lifts up.
He raises the poor from the dust
And lifts the beggar from the ash heap,
To set them among princes
And make them inherit the throne of glory.

Let them praise Your great and awesome name—
He is holy.
For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s.
The King’s strength also loves justice.
And He has set the world upon them.
You have established equity.
He will guard the feet of His saints.
You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.
But the wicked shall be silent in darkness.
Exalt the LORD our God,
And worship at His footstool—
He is holy.

So the woman conceived and bore a son. And when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him three months. But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank.

So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Samuel,saying, “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.” . . . “For this child I prayed, and the LORD has granted me my petition which I asked of Him. Therefore I also have lent him to the LORD; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the LORD.”

Moses and Aaron were among His priests,
And Samuel was among those who called upon His name;
They called upon the LORD, and He answered them.He spoke to them in the cloudy pillar;
They kept His testimonies and the ordinance He gave them.
You answered them, O LORD our God;
You were to them God-Who-Forgives,
Though You took vengeance on their deeds.
The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken in pieces;
From heaven He will thunder against them.
The LORD will judge the ends of the earth.

Exalt the LORD our God,
And worship at His holy hill;
For the LORD our God is holy.
“He will give strength to His king,
And exalt the horn of His anointed.”

Then the word of the Lord came to Zechariah, saying, (Zechariah 7:8 )
      LORD, let your word come to the leaders and teachers and people of this land.

“Thus says the Lord of hosts: (Zechariah 7:9a)
      Holy Spirit, help us hear what you are saying.

‘Execute true justice, (Zechariah 7:9b)
      Father, let there be true justice in this land — where no one is favored because they are rich or poor or middle-class.

Show mercy and compassion (Zechariah 7:9c)
      Jesus, help us show forth your mercy and compassion.

Everyone to his brother. (Zechariah 7:9d)
      Holy Spirit, restore unity to the families and parishes of this diocese.

Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, (Zechariah 7:10a)
      Jesus, protect the widows and orphans and the children that are in foster care.

The alien or the poor. (Zechariah 7:10b)
      LORD, you have told us in your word (see Exodus 12:49 and Numbers 15:16 and 29) that there is to be one law for both the native born and the alien in our midst. Bring to repentance those who would oppress the aliens and the poor among us.

Let none of you plan evil in his heart against his brother.’ (Zechariah 7:10c)
      Jesus, defeat the plans of all those who plan evil against their brothers; defeat the plans of all those who plan evil against their brethren in the church.

But they refused to heed, shrugged their shoulders, and stopped their ears so that they could not hear. Yes, they made their hearts like flint, refusing to hear the law and the words which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. Thus great wrath came from the Lord of hosts. Therefore it happened, that just as He proclaimed and they would not hear, so they called out and I would not listen,” says the Lord of hosts. (Zechariah 7:11-13)
      Father, bring the leaders and teachers and people of this nation and the Episcopal Church to a right understanding of the cost of refusing to hear your word and your law.

“But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they had not known. Thus the land became desolate after them, so that no one passed through or returned; for they made the pleasant land desolate.” (Zechariah 7:14)
      LORD, just as you brought us out of many lands to do justice and mercy and righteousness here in this land, so you can scatter us if we refuse to heed your word. That is what you did with Israel and that is what is happening to the Episcopal Church today; and still its leaders and people have not repented, and it is becoming desolation. Have mercy on us. You are the LORD who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage to sin. Help us repent of having any other gods before you. (See Exodus 20:2-3 and Deuteronomy 5:6-7)

      Michael sends his thanks to everyone for the prayers. He really felt like he was being attacked because they saw many healings, some being tumors that disappeared, and people set free. Yay God! He said that with all of the prayers for him he felt a tremendous heat come over him and then he was better. Praise God!
      It is so important to have the intercession when you go out on missions like this and we are grateful to everyone for praying! Blessings and love to you all! Linda

Matt. 25:1-13

December 15, 2011

“Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.” (Matthew 25:1)
      Holy Spirit, help us all go forth to meet Jesus.

“Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish.” (Matthew 25:2)
      Lord, you know where we are wise and where we are foolish. Give us wisdom daily and help us overcome our folly.

“Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, “ (Matthew 25:3)
      Father, so many try to answer your call without the oil of your Holy Spirit. Give them the wisdom to seek what you offer freely.

“but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. (Matthew 25:4)
      Lord, give your people the wisdom to seek out the fire and light of your Holy Spirit.

But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.” (Matthew 25:5)
      Jesus, so much of the church is asleep and unready for your coming; have mercy on us

“And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’” (Matthew 25:6)
      Jesus, you warned us repeatedly that the hour of your visitation will come as a surprise. Help us to be about the work you have given us to do.

“Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.” (Matthew 25:7)
      Holy Spirit, please help us daily trim our lamps and set them on a lamp stand to give light for others.

“And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’” (Matthew 25:8 )
      Jesus, it doesn’t work that way, you are the baptizer with the Holy Spirit. We can’t get your Spirit from some one else; we must seek him from you.

“But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’” (Matthew 25:9)
      Father, give us the courage to plainly tell others they must seek to receive the oil of your Holy Spirit from Jesus.

“And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.” (Matthew 25:10)
      Jesus, help us to be ready to enter the wedding feast when you come.

“Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ But he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’” (Matthew 25:11-12)
      Father, we are not by our nature your children. We become your children by adoption and grace and receiving your Holy Spirit. (See Romans 8:15-16)

“Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.” (Matthew 25:13)
      Holy Spirit, please help all of us throughout this diocese watch and pray so that we may receive you into our hearts and be ready when the Son of Man comes.

Praying for the Church – “turn Your steps toward these everlasting ruins”

December 14, 2011

Lately I’ve been thinking and praying a lot about the brokenness and weakness and seeming fragility of the Church.  I left a comment on the blog Stand Firm yesterday which sums up some of my frustration and grief over the Church’s failure on this side of Heaven to be the radiant Bride, pure and victorious, which Christ died to redeem for Himself.  Here’s part of what I wrote:

I’ve been mostly off the blogs in recent weeks and very much hesitating to jump into this discussion [about the AMiA break from the Province of Rwanda], but I was struck by [a previous commenter's] heart cry:

I know it sounds trite and simplistic, but I only want the church Jesus is building.  Can someone please tell me where it might be today?

It echos a cry we’ve been raising here in Africa as well in circumstances and a context about as far removed from the Anglican Communion, TEC and AMiA messes as you can get.

I’m writing in a context of a 1st generation church in what has been an unreached people group, where the nascent “church” is very much a network of local cell groups, underground, about as close to the Pauline 1st century context as it’s probably possible to find today.  There is much to rejoice in.   Twenty-five years ago there were no known believers in this people group.  So the fact that there are believers and a nascent church is a wonderful miracle.  And yet at times we’re tempted to despair at the pride and sin and immaturity and divisions in the lives of these new believers and their leaders.  Our cry is for a pure, spotless, radiant church that reflects the fullness and perfect measure of Jesus, where believers speak the truth in love, where they serve out of love for God, not for personal gain, etc. etc.  We see so little maturity and so little transformation “from glory into glory.”

This morning, I read Psalm 74 as part of my devotional reading, and I was struck by how it could be used as a cry for the Church, a cry for God’s rescue & care and deliverance for His people from the enemies that seek to ruin Her and make Her an object of scorn and mockery instead of a display of His glory and splendor.

These verses particularly resonated with me and I poured them out to the Lord in prayer as a cry for the Church – the Church and believers here where I work in Africa, the AMiA, ACNA, TEC and the Anglican Communion – and also as a prayer for my own life and heart, as one of the sinful broken people who is part of the Church Christ died for.

Ps 74:2-3, 18-19, 22a (NIV)
Remember the people you purchased of old, the tribe of your inheritance, whom you redeemed– Mount Zion, where you dwelt.    Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins,all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.

Remember how the enemy has mocked you, O LORD, how foolish people have reviled your name.  Do not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts; do not forget the lives of your afflicted people forever.

Rise up, O God, and defend your cause …

“Turn Your steps toward these everlasting ruins.”  Yes, the Church oftentimes seems to be very aptly described as everlasting ruins, in need of God’s restoration, rebuilding, renewing.  O Lord come near.  Defend Your cause, do not forsake us!

Psalm 74 reminds us of the Lord’s power and sovereignty, that nothing is impossible for Him, giving us hope to trust that He can (and WILL) build, keep, protect, defend, restore and redeem His Church, His people:

But you, O God, are my king from of old; you bring salvation upon the earth. It was you who split open the sea by your power; … It was you who opened up springs and streams; you dried up the ever flowing rivers.  The day is yours, and yours also the night; … It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth…

The rest of my comment at Stand Firm yesterday tried to focus on our Hope in Christ and His promises:

And yet if we believe God’s promises we WILL see it [that transformation from glory into glory].

I keep coming back to over and over again the wonderful truth and promise in Eph 3:10-11

His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God’s purposes never fail, they are ALWAYS perfectly fulfilled, and God has willed and designed through this awful fragile fallible sin-ridden Body called the Church to display His wisdom and greatness and glory to the powers of hell.  He will have the victory!  He will complete the work He has begun in His people.

One of my hopes and prayers in this AMiA mess, thus, is that God would somehow get greater glory. As the utter weakness of all church structures and leaders, and the ugliness of sin is once again visibly on display for all to see, may God shine forth out of these cracked clay pots and astound the world at the beauty He is able to bring forth out of what looks to be an unredeemable mess.  He is the God of redemption, He Himself is our redeemer.

Come Lord Jesus.  May our redemption not only be a confession of words, but a reality demonstrated in transformed lives.

So Yes Lord, we cry “turn Your steps toward these everlasting ruins!”  May they, may we, may I be a display for Your glory, built on the foundation of Christ, exalting Him, even in our weakness.

—-

By the way, for those who want to reflect further on God’s eternal purpose for the Church and the passage I’ve quoted above from Eph. 3, I highly recommend listening to John Piper’s exegesis of Ephesians 3 from the Lausanne Conference in South Africa last year, which I had the awesome joy and privilege of attending.  That exegesis, along with the amazing experience of being gathered together and worshipping with 4000+ other believers from virtually all the countries of the world did so much to expand my vision for the Church and to help me catch a glimpse of its beauty, stirring up my passion to pray for the fulfillment of God’s promises to complete His work and fulfill His purposes in us.

Revelation 4:8 and Zechariah 3:1-10

December 14, 2011

            Praying The Nicene Creed
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven,
      Jesus, thank you for being willing to give up the glory of heaven to come and live with us. Thank you that day by day your Holy Spirit is willing to live in us in the midst of all our sin.

The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” (Revelation 4:8 )
      LORD, please help us daily acknowledge your holiness and join in with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven in praising you.

Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him. And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?” Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and was standing before the Angel. Then He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, “Take away the filthy garments from him.” And to him He said, “See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes.” (Zechariah 3:1-4)
      Holy Spirit, cleanse us of all filth and clothe us with your righteousness.

And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head, and they put the clothes on him. And the Angel of the Lord stood by. (Zechariah 3:5)
      Jesus, help us put on the helmet of salvation daily.

Then the Angel of the Lord admonished Joshua, saying, “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘If you will walk in My ways, And if you will keep My command, Then you shall also judge My house, And likewise have charge of My courts; I will give you places to walk Among these who stand here. (Zechariah 3:6-7)
      Jesus, help the leaders and teachers of this diocese walk in your way. Give them a right judgment in all things.

‘Hear, O Joshua, the high priest, You and your companions who sit before you, For they are a wondrous sign; For behold, I am bringing forth My Servant the BRANCH. For behold, the stone That I have laid before Joshua: Upon the stone are seven eyes. Behold, I will engrave its inscription,’ Says the Lord of hosts, ‘And I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day. (Zechariah 3:8-9)
      Holy Father, come heal our land. Help us answer your call and humble ourselves and pray and seek your face and turn from our wicked ways, so that you will hear from heaven and forgive our sin and heal our land. (See 2 Chronicles 7:14)

In that day,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘Everyone will invite his neighbor Under his vine and under his fig tree.’” (Zechariah 3:10)
      Holy Spirit, restore neighborliness to our parishes and our communities. Thank you.

A word received: Keep looking to me.

      For Clergy, Lay Leaders and all those interested in how and why churches grow ? and how they can make a difference for the kingdom. Bishop Edward Salmon, retired Bishop of the only Episcopal Diocese within living memory to grow faster than the population, will present two full days of teaching on church leadership; January 10 & 11 at Christ the King Spiritual Life Center in Greenwich.
      More than theory, the concepts will present are based on practical experience and evidenced by the fruitful ministries in the churches he has served. In his first position after seminary his leadership of four small parishes enabled them to grow such that two of them were able to call their own rector within three years. During his time as Bishop of South Carolina (1990-2007), the diocese was one of the few in the Episcopal Church that grew in attendance. Now, as Dean of Nashotah Seminary, he looks forward to helping lead and equip a strong Priesthood for the Episcopal Church. Come and learn about the difference you can make in your parish.

“And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. (Revelation 3:14-15)
      Lord, give us a passion for the gospel and the work you have called us to.

So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. (Revelation 3:16)
      Holy Spirit, move the hearts of the “fence sitters” to make a commitment to Jesus and keep to it.

Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’–and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked– (Revelation 3:17)
      Holy Father, help us all know our need each day of Jesus’ saving work in our lives.

I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. (Revelation 3:18 )
      Jesus, you are the faithful and true witness; help us daily accept the counsel and guidance of your Holy Spirit.

As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. (Revelation 3:19)
      Father, you rebuke and chasten those you love. Help the Episcopal Church accept your rebuke and chastening as a sign of your love for us. (See Hebrews 12:7)

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. (Revelation 3:20)
      Jesus, come in behind the lock doors of my heart. (See John 20:19)

To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. (Revelation 3:21)
      Holy Spirit, help us daily overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil.

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”‘” (Revelation 3:22)
      Holy Spirit, give us ears to hear what you are saying to the churches. Restore hearing to the Episcopal Church. Thank you.

      Six years this week I saw the tiny illuminated hands of the Christ child Jesus in a vision. This was a pre-ordination vision, while half asleep, half awake. I saw his right hand rest on my heart with His left hand on top of His right hand. Then, in a smooth movement the right hand moved with the left hand on top as if the baby Hands of Christ were in front of my blessing the Chalice and Paten at the Holy Eucharist. Then the Hands moved again very fluidly, towards me then up and around as if those baby hands, lit up with light were receiving the Holy Eucharist. It was if the Christ Child was showing me the meaning of His birth at Christmas, His death on Good Friday, and His resurrection at Easter, all in three short fluid movements. It was such a gift to my pre-ordination jitters. I was then at peace… May you be totally at peace this Christmas tide.
