Psalm 139:13-16a (ESV)
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance.
Our Father in heaven,
You have made us in Your own image, after Your likeness. It is pure gift, and we thank You for Your generosity.
We lift up to You those persons who struggle with gender identity and cry out for mercy. We invite Your Holy Spirit to stay with these dear people.
Your Son Jesus is our Redeemer. May He release them from fear, isolation, alienation, abandonment, rejection, and despair. May He heal them of the trauma of violence, sexual abuse, defilement, belittlement, broken hearts, and hopes deferred. We claim the Blood of the Lamb over defiling touch, ungodly flesh memories, and addictions. Release them from the effects of witchcraft prayers. Release all unforgiveness and shame from their bodies, souls, and spirits.
If there is any portion separated from them by trauma and stuck in another time or dimension, we call forth those fragments, cleanse them in the Blood of the Lamb, and restore them.
If there is any portion of themselves that they have dismissed because they felt it was unacceptable or unworthy or caused them to be vulnerable, we call on the forgiveness of Christ on the cross. We speak forgiveness and love and mercy into every portion of their being. We call forth any dismissed fragments, cleanse them in the Blood of the Lamb, and restore them.
If there is any blocked development, kick the obstructions aside, Lord Jesus.
You know the traumas that they have endured. If these traumas have created access points where Satan’s minions can torment them, we apply the Blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ the Son of God, over these portals.
You are a God of restoration. Restore their identity in You. Cleanse the time and space in which they move. May they have the mind of Christ, with every dimension and realm brought into alignment with Your destiny for them.
We declare hope into their spirits. We bless every fiber, every cell, every particle, every fragment of their being. The King’s dominion in their bodies, souls, and spirits! Amen. Amen. Amen.
Some ideas in this prayer came from Jim Banks’ trauma prayer. I heartily recommend this 23-minute recorded prayer to everyone.
General Convention commences next month. They will be considering Resolution D002, which states that no person shall be denied access to the discernment process for any ministry, lay or ordained, in this Church due to gender identity or expression.
I applaud the compassion behind this resolution but believe it to be misguided. The surgical procedures a transgendered person must undergo are more mutilating than most cancer surgeries. –JW
