Our pastors

August 28, 2008

Lord, let ____ have a discerning mind to prioritize the precious minutes in the day. Let my pastor discern what is most important and be guarded against the tyranny of the urgent (2 Corinthians 11:14, 1 John 4:1)

Our pastors

August 27, 2008

Lord, I pray for discernment regarding the schemes of the enemy against my pastor _____. Show our congregation how to pray against all powers of this dark world and the spiritual forces of darkness in heavenly realms. And, Lord, protect us as we wage warfare on behalf of our pastor (Ephesians 6:11-12)

Father, I thank You that no weapons formed against my pastor will prosper. Every tongue raised aganst my shepherd will be cast down. Rumors and gossip will be turned aside. For ______ will be still before the Lord and wait on You. My pastor will dwell in the shadow of the Most High God and will be delivered from terror, darts of doubt, and diseases (Psalm 91:5-6). Set Your angels about my pastor (Psalm 91:11) and no power of the enemy shall harm ____ (Luke 10:19). Thank God forevermore!

John 6:60-66

August 26, 2008

Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?” When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples complained about this, he said to them, “Does this offend you? (John 6:60-61)
Jesus, so many in your church are offended by what you have said and done; help us to receive your words.

What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where he was before? (John 6:62)
Holy Spirit, help your church and your people believe the deeds that Jesus has done for us.

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. (John 6:63)
Jesus, please speak your words of spirit and life to the Episcopal Church today. It has become mired in the flesh; restore it to a life in your Spirit.

But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray him. (John 6:64)
Father, bring to faith the leaders and teachers of the Episcopal Church, for many of them betray Jesus by their lack of faith and their words and deeds.

And he said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to me unless it has been granted to him by my father.” (John 6:65)
Father, please grant this mercy for Jesus’ sake.

From that time many of his disciples went back and walked with him no more. (John 6:66)
Jesus, we weep for your disciples who have chosen to walk apart from you.

Psalm 7:1-5 and Psalm 139:11-12

August 25, 2008

O LORD my God, in you I put my trust; save me from all those who persecute me; and deliver me, (Psalm 7:1)
LORD, turn our hearts to you.

Lest they tear me like a lion, rending me in pieces, while there is none to deliver. (Psalm 7:2)
Father, we cry out to you for your church; we are troubled by the direction of the Episcopal Church and ask you to give us your strength.

O LORD my God, if I have done this: if there is iniquity in my hands, (Psalm 7:3)
Holy Spirit, help us recognize and repent of our iniquity.

If I have repaid evil to him who was at peace with me, or have plundered my enemy without cause, (Psalm 7:4)
Jesus, your church is being plundered by law suits, have mercy on us.

Let the enemy pursue me and overtake me; yes, let him trample my life to the earth, and lay my honor in the dust. (Psalm 7:5)
LORD, in your mercy protect us; guide Bishop Bill and the leaders of this diocese in this difficult time.

If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,” even the night shall be light about me; indeed, the darkness shall not hide from you, but the night shines as the day; the darkness and the light are both alike to you. (Psalm 139:11-12)
Lord Jesus, there is no darkness dark enough to hide us from your light; help us to walk by your light today.

Monday: 4, 7; Job 4:1, 5:1-11, 17-21,26-27; Acts 9:19b-31; John 6:52-59
Tuesday: 10, 11; Job 6:1-4, 8-15, 21; Acts 9:32-43; John 6:60-71

Billy Graham’s prayer for our nation

August 25, 2008

The Democratic National Convention is this week, and the Republican next week.

Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness
and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says,
‘Woe to those who call evil good,’ but that is exactly what we have
done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor’s possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.

Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Amen!

Psalm 111:1-6 and Prayer Table Report

August 24, 2008

Praise the LORD! I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright and in the congregation. (Psalm 111:1)
Holy Spirit, move our hearts to praise Jesus!

The works of the LORD are great, studied by all who have pleasure in them. (Psalm 111:2)
Father, move our hearts to study and meditate on your mighty deeds. Let the Bible be a living word to your people.

His work is honorable and glorious, and his righteousness endures forever. (Psalm 111:3)
Jesus, it is by your righteousness that we are saved. Thank you for giving us eyes to see what you have done for us.

He has made his wonderful works to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and full of compassion. (Psalm 111:4)
Father, we pray that your mighty acts of salvation will be living memorial stones in the life of your people. (See Joshua 4.)

He has given food to those who fear him; he will ever be mindful of his covenant. (Psalm 111:5)
Jesus, thank you for the new covenant that was established by the shedding of your blood. Please help us be ever mindful of the cost of our redemption.

He has declared to his people the power of his works, in giving them the heritage of the nations. (Psalm 111:6)
Thank you, Father, for giving us through your son what we could never earn on our own.

GAFCON Primates Meeting August 20 -24

August 20, 2008

The GAFCON Primates meeting begins today.  Auspiciously, today is the feast day of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, a brilliant theolgian and student of Scripture.  St. Bernard reformed the monastic order of Benedictines which eventually led to the establishment of the Trappists.  He lived in a time of great schism within the church and is credited with reuniting and reconciling the church while keeping the church doctrinally sound.

The Gospel lesson for the feast day of St. Bernard is John 15: 7-11:

If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”

Father in heaven, we lift up in prayer the faithful and courageous GAFCON primates who meet with one another beginning this day.  May they remain in Christ, Father.  May his words remain in them.  May their prayers for peace,  unity, and sound teaching in our church be answered.  They have committed themselves to the path of discipleship, Father.  May they glorify you by bearing much fruit.  May they remain in Christ’s love.  May they obey his commands.  May Christ’s joy be in them and may their joy therefore be complete.

We ask Father that your Holy Spirit be ever present at this meeting.  Inspire their hearts and minds with your love and your words and your thoughts.  May they rejoice at the coming of your Spirit.  May they lose themselves in their devotion to you.  Make them bold evangelists of your kingdom.  Make their hearts, minds, and faces radiant with your love.  Empower them with the irresistible message of your Gospel.

Father, we ask nothing less than you use this group, and this meeting, to revive our church.  Awaken us from our spiritual torpor.  Renew us.  Baptize us with your Holy Spirit.  Blow a mighty wind throughout the Anglican Communion.  Fill us to overflowing with your good news.  Give us the same passion for one another that you have for us.  Give us the passion that you showed us when you made yourself into a man and came to earth in person to redeem us.  Bring us to our knees with love and devotion and awe.  Break through our stony, ice-cold hearts.  Cast out our timidity with your perfect love.  We love you, Father.  Give us voices than cannot keep from singing.

Amen.

In Your Name

August 19, 2008

Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 124:8

O Lord, so many meetings this week–Common Cause bishops, CANA, GAFCON primates. May their praise and their prayers, their remembrance of Your mighty deeds and their reception of Your revelation, their words, their actions, their decisions to wait and to proceed, be done in Your name:
Christ be with them, Christ within them,
Christ behind them, Christ before them,
Christ beside them, Christ to win them,
Christ to comfort and restore them.
Christ beneath them, Christ above them,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love them,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

May they bind unto themselves the Name,
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.
By Whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
Praise to the Lord of our salvation,
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.
