“Religion and good morals are the only solid foundation of public liberty and happiness.”

O Lord, may it be so in the United States of America. Amen.

General Synod of the Church of England

July 4, 2008

The synod commences today.

Sovereign Lord,
Place a sentry at the door of the lips of each person present to prevent them speaking words that would offend You. We pray that all of the voting delegates, lay and clergy, will heed Your word, to the glory of Your name. Amen.
Psalm 141:3

Ecclesiastical and spirtual fatigue

July 4, 2008

Lord Jesus,
You are the Good Shepherd. We entrust our selves, our leaders, and our beloved church to You.
Deep calleth to deep. Lead us to a quiet place where we can be still and know that You are God. Help us to stay in Your presence.
We so easily stray. Use Your rod and staff to release us from the thicket of Satan’s snares. Help our unforgiveness. Guide us to the right path.
Heal our wounds. Replace our fears with Your love. Fill us with Your Spirit to overflowing.
We want to stay close to You, and we don’t know how to do it. Keep us in the tabernacle of Your presence. Amen.

A Prayer for Lambeth Conference Bishops, July 4

July 4, 2008

Almighty God, who called your Church to witness that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself: Help the Anglican bishops & primates to proclaim the good news of your love, that all who hear it may be drawn to you; through him who was lifted up on the cross, and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. (adapted from CoE Common Worship Collects)

Selected Passages from today’s lectionary:

Ps. 143:10 – Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground!

Rom 8:12-14 – So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

Psalm 100

July 4, 2008

Jubilate Deo
Psalm c.
O BE joyful in the Lord, all ye lands; serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song.
LORD, please help this nation find its joy in you rather than things. Restore service to you to our common life, and help us come into your presence with song.

Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Jesus, please restore to our common life in this nation a hunger for you and the knowledge that you are God. Restore to this nation the knowledge that you have made us, that we are your people, and the sheep of your hand.

O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name.
Father, we long to go through your narrow gate and come into your courts with praise. Help us to be a people mindful of your goodness and a desire to speak good of the name of Jesus.

For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth from generation to generation.
Holy Spirit, thank you for your grace: thank you for visiting us daily with your word; thank you for your mercy: thank you for not abandoning us when we have abandoned you. Please let the truth of the gospel endure in this nation and in your church from generation to generation. Thank you.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son; and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be; world without end. Amen.

A word received: Heed my word: pray for my people to heed my word.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8 )

Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Collect for the Community of St. Mary:
Almighty God, who chose the blessed Virgin Mary to be the Mother of your Incarnate Son, grant to us your servants who bear her name so to yield ourselves to the operation of the Holy Spirit that we may be acceptable in your sight and may bring forth to you the fruit of good works, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Fifth Day: For Consecration to a Life of Mediating Healing Love
Gracious Father, your Son Jesus calls us to heal the broken-hearted, to dry the tears of those who mourn, to give hope to those who despair, to rejoice in your steadfast love. Call forth from among us Sisters of St. Mary to mediate the healing love of Jesus Christ poured out through his Holy Spirit. Amen.

Our pagan roots

July 4, 2008

O God, in the Garden of Eden, You made all kinds of beautiful trees to grow. You instructed Noah to use the trees to build an ark, Moses to build the ark of the covenant, Solomon to build the temple, Nehemiah to build the wall, and Ezra to rebuild the temple.
Yet in our sinfulness, we have used the beautiful trees to great offense. Adam and Eve hid from You among the trees. We have built idols and weapons of war and gallows with the beautiful trees.
The glory of Your creation in the woodlands has been corrupted by idol worship. In Great Britain, Cernunnos, Mars Rigonemetis, Silvanus Callirius, Arnemetia, Esus, and other nature deities have been worshipped by the Celts, and Ceres, Sylvanus, and other nature gods by the Romans.
Have mercy, Lord. Have mercy. We have placed ourselves higher than You.
We claim the cross of Jesus, that sacred tree, over all self-idolatry and all the nature worship of Britain, including Druidry. At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow, including our own. At the name of Jesus, the pagan gods of nature worship must submit. If any leaders of the Anglican Communion are under a curse from the pagan worship of their ancestors or from cultural vows, we claim the cross to break that curse.
All authority in Great Britain has been given to Jesus. We lift high the cross over the House of Windsor, Canterbury, the Lambeth Conference, and the Anglican Communion. We claim the sweet wood of the cross over the bitter relationships of the Communion.
Bless the leaders of the Anglican Communion, dear Lord. Especially bless Rowan Williams. Amen.
