James 1:19-27

So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; (James 1:19)
Father, you have told us that there is a time for every purpose under heaven: a time to keep silence, and a time to speak (Ecclesiastes 3: 1,7b); help us discern when to do each, give us listening ears and hearts.

for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. (James 1:20)
Jesus, please help us lay aside wrath in the Episcopal Church and seek after your righteousness.

Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. (James 1:21)
Holy Spirit, cleanse the leaders and people of the Episcopal Church of their present support of evil and help us all receive your word into our souls.

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (James 1:22)
Father, help us live out and do your word; set us free from self-deception.

For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. (James 1:23-24)
Jesus, as we hear and do your word to us; graft into our hearts a true and lasting knowledge of ourselves and your love for us.

But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the word, this one will be blessed in what he does. (James 1:25)
Holy Spirit, help us look into and continue in the perfect law of liberty that has been won for us by Jesus’ death and resurrection.

If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless. (James 1:26)
LORD, we have a lot of useless religion in the Episcopal Church, bridle our tongues: help us be swift to hear and slow to speak and slow to wrath.

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. (James 1:27)
Holy Spirit, guide and bless the prayer table ministry: help us visit the orphans and widows and those in trouble with your healing love as we pray with them. Thank you.

A word received: Turn to me and I will comfort you. Turn to me and I will revive you. Turn to me.
