2 Timothy 4:1-8

February 13, 2009

I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at his appearing and His kingdom: (2 Timothy 4:1)
Holy Spirit, please help all of the clergy and lay leaders of this diocese to receive this charge.

Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. (2 Timothy 4:2)
Father, as Jonah went into Nineveh and preached your word and the people repented, so move the hearts of your people to go through the communities of this diocese preaching your word. Give us your word to speak at all times and in all places, by day and by night, at morning and at evening.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; (2 Timothy 4:3)
Jesus, this is a generation with itching ears that cannot endure sound doctrine; have mercy on us and unstop our ears.

and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. (2 Timothy 4:4)
LORD, the leaders and teachers of the Episcopal Church have turned aside from the truth and have listened to the fables of the gay agenda and those “scholars” who teach with no faith; have mercy on us.

But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. (2 Timothy 4:5)
Holy Spirit, please help us throughout this diocese to be watchful in all things, enduring whatever afflictions come our way, doing the work of an evangelist, and faithful in the ministry you have given us.

For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. (2 Timothy 4:6)
Jesus, you poured you life out for us, help us to follow in your footsteps.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (2 Timothy 4:7)
Amen, Lord Jesus; let this be true of your people throughout this diocese.

Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved his appearing. (2 Timothy 4:8 )
Father, please prepare our hearts for the day of Jesus’ appearing. Thank you for the treasure that is laid up for us in heaven.

A word received: Keep looking to me; I will provide. Set your hope in me; anchor it there. Hope in me for hope that does not disappoint.
