Lent Prayers: St. Thomas More
Filed under: Quotable, Saints & Church Fathers, Lent 2007, Lent Prayers — Karen B.

Glorious God, give me grace to amend my life and to have an eye to mine end without grudge of death, which to them that die in thee, good Lord, is the fate of a wealthy life. Give me, good Lord, a full faith, a firm hope and a fervent charity, a love to thee incomparable above the love to myself. Give me, good Lord, a longing to be with thee, not for the avoiding of the calamities of this world, nor so much for the attaining of the joys of heaven, as for the very love of thee.

— Thomas More (1478 – 1535) (from a prayer written a few days before his execution.)

The Imitation of Christ
Filed under: Quotable, Lent Quotes — Jill W.

Arise, begin this very moment and say, “Now is the time to do: now is the time to fight, now is the proper time for amendment.”

When thou art ill at ease and troubled, then is the time when thou art nearest unto blessing.

Thou must go through fire and water that God may bring thee into a wealthy place.

— The Imitation of Christ, attributed to Thomas a Kempis

Psalm 72:1-8

March 11, 2009

Give the king your judgments, O God, and your righteousness to the king’s Son. (Psalm 72:1)
Lord, guide your servant Barack: help him give righteous judgment in the affairs of this nation.

He will judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice. (Psalm 72:2)
Holy Spirit, guide Barack and his advisors so that he judges righteously and has a heart for the poor.

The mountains will bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness. (Psalm 72:3)
Jesus, please help us return to you so that you may heal our land.

He will bring justice to the poor of the people; he will save the children of the needy, and will break in pieces the oppressor. (Psalm 72:4)
Father, we cry out to you for those who are losing or have lost their jobs and health care; we cry out to you for the children of the needy; and we ask for you to deal with those who have enriched themselves while laying off workers.

They shall fear you as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations. (Psalm 72:5)
Father, restore to this nation a holy fear of you and your righteous judgments.

He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing, like showers that water the earth. (Psalm 72:6)
Holy Spirit, come down on us, restore us, and make us a fruitful nation again.

In his days the righteous shall flourish, and abundance of peace, until the moon is no more. (Psalm 72:7)
Jesus, establish your kingdom and peace in our hearts.

He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. (Psalm 72:8 )
Jesus, we ask you to have dominion over the whole of this land. Thank you.

A word received: Pray for my people. Pray that I will raise up true shepherds of the flock.
