Yay! I’ve got a better internet connection this morning, and have been able to update our Lent 2010 index of all the devotional entries and resources we’ve posted so far this Lent. We’re up to about 60 entries…
The following stanza from William Cowper’s hymn “O for a Closer Walk with God” makes a great Lenten prayer – may the Lord help us to examine our hearts for any idols today and grant us grace and strength to tear them from the throne.
The dearest idol I have known,
Whatever that idol be,
Help me to tear it from thy throne,
and worship only thee…
– William Cowper, “O For a Closer Walk with God”
“I removed his shoulder from the burden; his hands were freed from the baskets.” (Psalm 81:6)
Jesus, thank you for every burden you have lifted off of us and placed on your cross.
“You called in trouble, and I delivered you;” (Psalm 81:7a)
Father, you hear us when we cry out to you. Thank you.
“I answered you in the secret place of thunder;” (Psalm 81:7b)
Holy Spirit, thank you for speaking to us; thank you for searching out all the hidden places in our hearts and minds and spirits.
“I tested you at the waters of Meribah.” (Psalm 81:7c)
Jesus, please continue to refine and purify us. Lord, we have been found wanting so many times and we have provoked your saints with our stubborn hearts. Have mercy on us and lead us by the hand into the provision you have prepared for us. Thank you.

Reports of 500 being killed in Muslim attack.
There is so much grief in Nigeria, lost loved ones, shattered hopes. Turn their eyes to Jesus, Lord.
—He has borne their griefs and carried their sorrows.
—He will bind their broken hearts and open a door of hope.
—He will bestow upon them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting.
Turn their eyes to Jesus, Lord. Turn their eyes to Jesus. Amen.
Isaiah 53:4, 61:1-3
Hear, O Sudan: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
Lord of hosts, come to Sudan.
Love the LORD your God with all your heart.
Lord of hosts, be their garland of glory and diadem of beauty.
Love the LORD your God with all your soul.
Lord of hosts, be their spirit of justice.
Love the LORD your God with all your might.
Lord of hosts, be their strength in the battle.
Write these words on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
Lord of hosts, turn back the battle at the gate. We stand in agreement with Your written word and write these words on the spiritual gates of Sudan. Amen.
