John 10:23-30

April 25, 2010

And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon’s porch. (John 10:23)
Jesus, please come and walk among us today. Help us recognize you when you come among us.

Then the Jews surrounded him and said to him, “How long do you keep us in doubt? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” (John 10:24)
Jesus, please help us come to you in hope and trust, rather than to dispute with you.

Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my father’s name, they bear witness of me.” (John 10:25)
Holy Spirit, please help us recognize the works that Jesus is doing among us and believe him. Thank you.

“But you do not believe, because you are not of my sheep, as I said to you.” (John 10:26)
Jesus, fold us in your arms and help us be your sheep.

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)
      A word received: Listen.

Father, please help us throughout this diocese to know the voice of Jesus, to listen to him, and to follow him wherever he leads us. Thank you.

“And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand.” (John 10:28 )
Lord, protect your sheep from the lies of the deceiver.

“My father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of my father’s hand.” (John 10:29)
Father, thank you that we are in your care. Please help us bear fruit worthy of repentance.

“I and my father are one.” (John 10:30)
Holy Spirit, please let the unity that the Father, Jesus, and you have with each other be a mark of our common life together in this diocese. Thank you for the work you are doing among us to prepare our hearts for the Diocesan Convention.

Note: Awesome, gorgeous weather day. Five people stopped for prayer. Praise God.

a–denotes anointed with Holy Oil.
t–denotes received wooden cross made by Dennis Adams of North Carolina.

t,t, a — NANCY — Asked for prayers for her son who HAD been struggling in school but is doing better since Nancy asked for prayer at recent church functions. She also received prayer for general health to be able to deal with the continual stress of being a young mother and wife.

a–JOE — Repeat visitor to the Table. Joe has been praying for several months for a fervent reconnection with his son ROBIN, from who he is estranged. Joe is considering moving to another community to better provide and connect with his elder mother ANNE who is 91. JOE also has problems with his knees and is very uncomfortable. Please pray for all of Joe’s concerns and that God will provide for him and protect and preserve him.

DOROTHY — Asked for prayers for general good health and well-being for herself. It was obvious she wanted to tarry and talk some more but she did not want to delay her friends who were with her.

t,a — MARY LOU — This elderly, friendly woman wanted prayers for God’s protection for her grand-daughter CHRISTIE who is pregnant with her first child. Pray that the pregnancy will go well and the child will eventually walk with the Lord. Mary Lou is ecstatic that she will soon have a great-grandchild!

VIRGINIA — This woman stopped somewhat reluctantly — but with certainty — on her way to her car and asked that we pray for the soul of her nephew ROBERT who recently passed away. She said Robert was a believer in Christ. I assured Virginia we would pray for Robert.

Prayers for Yazoo City

April 25, 2010

When I logged on to my computer just now, I saw that Yazoo City, Mississippi has been ravaged by tornadoes, and that a church has been destroyed.

This is the area of Mississippi where Jill & George Woodiff live. I would ask our readers to uphold Jill and George in prayer this weekend.

A few links: here, and here

The collects from the Compline service are what first came into my mind to pray for the Woodliff family and all in Yazoo City tonight. Even in this dark and painful time, may Christ’s light shine brightly, and may the Lord guard His people with His angels and preserve their hearts in peace:

Be our light in the darkness, O Lord, and in your great mercy
defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the
love of your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the hours
of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and
chances of this life may rest in your eternal changelessness;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Look down, O Lord, from your heavenly throne, and
illumine this night with your celestial brightness; that by
night as by day your people may glorify your holy Name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Visit this place, O Lord, and drive far from it all snares of the
enemy; let your holy angels dwell with us to preserve us in
peace; and let your blessing be upon us always; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.
