Texas

July 29, 2010

Its nickname is the Lone Star state. In its early history, several expeditions and battles used a flag with a lone star.

Jesus,
You are the bright morning star. Shine over the state of Texas in these dark days, we pray. Amen.

Matthew 27:55-61

July 29, 2010

And many women who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him, were there looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons. (Matthew 27:55-56)
Holy Spirit, thank you for the many women who daily follow you in this diocese. Please raise up vocations to the devout and holy life for the Sisters of St. Mary, the Daughters of the King, the Franciscans of the Holy Cross, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, and the many other ministries in this diocese.

Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him. (Matthew 27:57-58 )
Jesus, thank you for all those who daily give of themselves in service to you. Thank you for those who are willing to risk their lives and fortunes to honor you.

When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed. And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb. (Matthew 27:59-61)
Father, you watched and waited as your son was executed, have mercy on us and help us watch and wait with all those who suffer for his sake. Bring us to resurrection joy along with all his disciples. Thank you.

Breastplate of righteousness

July 29, 2010

O God,
It is because of You that I am in Christ Jesus. Christ Jesus has become my wisdom, righteousness, holiness and redemption. He is my breastplate. In Him, I am dead to sin. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
1 Corinthians 1:30, Romans 3:22-25, 6:11
