Glastonbury

Glastonbury Abbey has in history been one of the most important religious places in the UK. During the Christian era great numbers of pilgrims flocked to the Abbey to venerate the relics of saints and sages, the most valued relics being those of St.Patrick who ended his days at Glastonbury in 461 AD.

St. Patrick’s Breastplate (adapted)

We bind unto Glastonbury today
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.

We bind this day to Glastonbury for ever.
By power of faith, Christ’s incarnation;
His baptism in the Jordan river;
His death on Cross for their salvation;
His bursting from the spicèd tomb;
His riding up the heavenly way;
His coming at the day of doom;
We bind unto Glastonbury today.

We bind unto Glastonbury the power
Of the great love of the cherubim;
The sweet ‘well done’ in judgment hour,
The service of the seraphim,
Confessors’ faith, Apostles’ word,
The Patriarchs’ prayers, the Prophets’ scrolls,
All good deeds done unto the Lord,
And purity of virgin souls.

We bind unto Glastonbury today
The virtues of the starlit heaven,
The glorious sun’s life-giving ray,
The whiteness of the moon at even,
The flashing of the lightning free,
The whirling wind’s tempestuous shocks,
The stable earth, the deep salt sea,
Around the old eternal rocks.

We bind unto Glastonbury today
The power of God to hold and lead,
His eye to watch, His might to stay,
His ear to hearken to their need.
The wisdom of our God to teach,
His hand to guide, His shield to ward,
The word of God to give Glastonbury’s Christians speech,
His heavenly host to be their guard.

Against the demon snares of sin,
The vice that gives temptation force,
The natural lusts that war within,
The hostile men that mar their course;
Or few or many, far or nigh,
In every place and in all hours,
Against their fierce hostility,
We bind to Glastonbury these holy powers.

Against all Satan’s spells and wiles,
Against false words of heresy,
Against the knowledge that defiles,
Against the heart’s idolatry,
Against the wizard’s evil craft,
Against the death wound and the burning,
The choking wave and the poisoned shaft,
Protect this town, Christ, till Thy returning.

Christ be with them, Christ within them,
Christ behind them, Christ before them,
Christ beside them, Christ to win them,
Christ to comfort and restore them.
Christ beneath them, Christ above them,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love them,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

We bind unto Glastonbury the Name,
The strong Name of the Trinity;
By invocation of the same.
The Three in One, and One in Three,
Of Whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
Praise to the Lord of our salvation,
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

    Dear Holy Father,

    Glastonbury and all of Great Britain have been inundated by paganism and occult spirits
    that seek to steal. obscure and counterfeit Your glory.
    The church and her shepherds have forgotten You and have given place to evil and believed lies.

    Have mercy, Father, turn Your face and countenance toward this group of nations.
    Shine the light of Your Truth, the fire of Your Love, the power of Life.
    Speak Your powerful Holy Word with which You created the worlds without end.

    Holy Spirit, please bring revelation, conviction of sin, righteousness and judgment.
    Set fire to hearts and minds to burn away the dross of pride, greed and lust.
    Overturn and drive out the corrupt factions that have taken hold of the church, state and culture.

    May the Son of Righteousness arise with healing in His wings.
    Come, deliverer of souls! Help the people to hear, believe and heed Your Word,
    Help them to know and cherish Your sweetness, goodness and beauty,
    To be restored to the joy, freedom and peace that only You can give.

    Please Lord, turn the heart of Glastonbury and Britain back to You
    May a great revival come to this nation again
    and spread Your glory over the earth!

    In the Name of our Lord Jesus, Amen
