Luke 23:31-43

“For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?” (Luke 23:31)
Jesus, please help us recognize our capacity for sin.

There were also two others, criminals, led with him to be put to death. (Luke 23:32)
      For Prisoners.
O GOD, who spares when we deserve punishment, and in your wrath remembers mercy; we humbly beseech you, of your goodness, to comfort and succour all prisoners [especially those who are condemned to die]. Give them a right understanding of themselves, and of your promises; that, trusting wholly in your mercy, they may not place their confidence anywhere but in you. Relieve the distressed, protect the innocent, awaken the guilty; and forasmuch as you alone bring light out of darkness, and good out of evil, grant to these your servants, that by the power of your Holy Spirit they may be set free from the chains of sin and death, and may be brought to newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP)
“Remember the prisoners as if chained with them–those who are mistreated–since you yourselves are in the body also.” (Hebrews 13:3)
Lord, in your mercy remember Shane, Lori, Renee, Annie, Bobby, and Ed.

And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. (Luke 23:33)
Thank you, Jesus for what you were willing to endure to set us free from sin and death.

Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided his garments and cast lots. (Luke 23:34)
Lord, you were stripped of everything — even your cloths so that you could fulfill all that was written about you in the Scriptures. Please help us remember your sacrifice for us.

And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ, the chosen of God.” (Luke 23:35)
Lord, so many of the rich and powerful still hold you and your little ones in contempt. Help us reverence all your people.

The soldiers also mocked him, coming and offering him sour wine, (Luke 23:36)
Holy Spirit, help all those whose job it is to guard prisoners and those on parole to have your compassion for them.

and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself.” (Luke 23:37)
Father, you asked your son to endure this for our sakes. Thank you.

And an inscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. (Luke 23:38 )
Jesus, you are my Lord and my King.

Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed him, saying, “If you are the Christ, save yourself and us.” But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” (Luke 23:39-42)
Jesus, remember me; hold me in your arms. Thank you.

And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:43)
Lord, I live in the hope that your promises give me.

A word received: Pray my people will turn to me.
