Eight donkey narratives

June 27, 2011

1. Abraham and Isaac in Moriah
Genesis 22:2 (NKJV)
Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”

2. Joseph and his brothers in Egypt
Genesis 42:26 (NKJV)
So they loaded their donkeys with the grain and departed from there.

3. Balaam’s ass between Pethor and Moab
Numbers 22:22 (NKJV)
Then God’s anger was aroused because he went, and the Angel of the LORD took His stand in the way as an adversary against him. And he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.

4. Jair in Gilead
Judges 10:3-4 (NKJV)
After him arose Jair, a Gileadite; and he judged Israel twenty-two years. Now he had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys; they also had thirty towns, which are called “Havoth Jair” to this day, which are in the land of Gilead.

5. Abdon of Pirathon
Judges 12:13-14 (NKJV)
After him, Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel. He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy young donkeys. He judged Israel eight years.

6. The disobedient prophet, between Bethel and Judah
1 Kings 13:24 (NKJV)
When he was gone, a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his corpse was thrown on the road, and the donkey stood by it. The lion also stood by the corpse.

7. The Shunammite between Shunem and Carmel
2 Kings 4:24-25 (NKJV)
Then she saddled a donkey, and said to her servant, “Drive, and go forward; do not slacken the pace for me unless I tell you.” And so she departed, and went to the man of God at Mount Carmel.
So it was, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to his servant Gehazi, “Look, the Shunammite woman!

8. The triumphant entry from Bethphage to Jerusalem
Mark 11:7 (NKJV)
Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it.

It is interesting to compare the donkey series with the series of eight postures, derived from the study of Moses’ eight ascents and descents on Mt Sinai and the eight resurrections:

God carries
Intercession at the feet of God
Stand up on feet
Out of love, choose servitude and give your master your ear
Reach out and rejoice at the intersection between heaven and earth
Unwrap the grave clothes and build a dwelling place for God
From prayer on knees to moving forward
God penetrates

In 1620, the Pilgrims made the Mayflower Compact “for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith.” July 4 marks the 235th birthday of our nation.
It has been over 150 years since the Civil War. When Solomon embraced idolatry, God judged Solomon and the land by dividing it into north and south.

Our Father in heaven,
Our nation is awash in greed. We confess that we have placed our comfort and our convenience above Your holy laws. We confess that we have violated the Sabbath. Stir our hearts to eschew all idolatry, particularly Mammon.
May we be one nation under Your reign with liberty and justice for all persons, including the unborn. May the United States of America be for Your glory and the advancement of Your kingdom. Amen.

Romans 8:1-17

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. (Romans 8:1)
Lord, please help me walk according to your Spirit.

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:2)
Lord Jesus, I was a captive to sin and death and you have set me free. Thank you.

For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, (Romans 8:3)
Father, thank you for sending your son to rescue me.

that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. (Romans 8:4)
Holy Spirit, thank you for letting me know that I have been set free.

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. (Romans 8:5)
Holy Father, help us daily set our minds on the things of your Spirit.

For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. (Romans 8:6)
Jesus, set your church free from being carnally minded.

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. (Romans 8:7)
Jesus, set us free from the false teaching that says, “We can have it all: the things of the flesh and a right relationship with you.”

So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. (Romans 8:8 )
Father, please help us please you.

But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. (Romans 8:9)
Holy Spirit, baptize the church in this diocese so that we have Christ in our hearts and minds.

And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. (Romans 8:10)
Christ, come into me day by day.

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. (Romans 8:11)
Holy Spirit, keep me in this new life day by day.

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors–not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. (Romans 8:12)
Thank you for cancelling the debt of sin, Jesus. Thank you for your cross.

For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. (Romans 8:13)
Jesus, bring your church to clarity about the nature of the choice that is before us.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. (Romans 8:14)
Holy Spirit, thank you for leading me into son-ship with the Father.

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” (Romans 8:15)
Father, thank you for adopting me.

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, (Romans 8:16)
Holy Spirit, thank you for bearing witness to me: that I am a child of God.

and if children, then heirs–heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. (Romans 8:17)
Jesus, thank you for the hope of glory you have given me.

A word received: Turn to me. Leave your agenda behind. Keep turning to me.

A word received: Prepare the hearts of my people: draw them to my word.
