Galatians 5:16-26 and Ephesians 6:10-20

June 28, 2011

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. (Galatians 5:16)
Holy Spirit, help us walk in your ways.

For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. (Galatians 5:17)
Lord Jesus, there is a war going on in us: help us daily choose to walk with your Holy Spirit.

But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. (Galatians 5:18 )
Father, when we share the gospel with others, keep us from putting under the law.

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21)
Jesus, we have done so many of these things; help us repent of them and return to you.

Holy Spirit, help us recognize the cost of practicing any of these works of the flesh.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)
Lord, bring each of us to the place where we daily practice this fruit in our family, our work place, our parish, and our community.

And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. (Galatians 5:24)
Jesus, help us crucify all these passions and desires.

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. (Galatians 5:25)
Father, help us live and walk in your Holy Spirit.

Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. (Galatians 5:26)
LORD, bring your peace to our parishes and communities.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints–and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. (Ephesians 6:10-20)
Father, please put on all of us the shoes of the preparation to share the gospel of peace; gird our loins with your truth; put on us the breastplate of righteousness, and the helmet of salvation. Place on our arm the shield of faith with which to quench every fiery dart of the evil one; and place in our hand the sword of your Spirit which is your word; that having stood all, we might yet stand. Finally, help us to be strong in Jesus and in the power of his might, and cast off from us the chains of apathy that keep us from speaking boldly as we ought to speak. Thank you.
