Matthew 22:15-22

July 6, 2012

Then the Pharisees went and plotted how they might entangle him in his talk. (Matthew 22:15)
Holy Spirit, bring confusion to all those who plot against Jesus and his disciples.

And they sent to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do you care about anyone, for you do not regard the person of men. (Matthew 22:16)
Lord, shut the mouths of the hypocrites who profess one thing and do another.

Tell us, therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” (Matthew 22:17)
Jesus, defeat all the clever arguments of those who by human reasoning desire to confuse the truth of the gospel.

But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test me, you hypocrites? Show me the tax money.” So they brought him a denarius. (Matthew 22:18-19)
Holy Spirit, please help us recognize hypocrisy for what it is as Jesus did.

And he said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar’s.” And he said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” (Matthew 22:20-21)
Father, we are stamped with your image — help us give ourselves fully to you and to your kingdom purposes.

When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left Him and went their way. (Matthew 22:22)
Jesus, as you did with these Pharisees and Herodians, I ask you to defeat all the arguments of those who would lead your people astray at the General Convention. Thank you.
