Hurricane Sandy: Current Watches and Warnings map

October 27, 2012

Here’s one way of appreciating the size and potential impact of Hurricane Sandy.   By my count 10 entire states & D.C. are covered in watches and warnings of some kind:  Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont.

Here’s the map:

You can find the original (which is interactive, you can click on an area to get details) here.

This an OFFICIAL NWS/NOAA map, and it is current as of  10/27/2012 at 21:55 UTC.

Heavenly Father, tens of millions are potentially affected by this storm.  Be with all who are feeling anxious this night, and give all in danger grace and wisdom to prepare wisely.  We pray too for millions of acts of compassion as neighbors reach out to help neighbors.  Lord, have mercy upon our land and our people.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Hurricane Sandy – more on the storm surge risk to New York City

October 27, 2012

One of my greatest concerns related to Hurricane Sandy is the risk of extreme storm surge and coastal flooding in the NY Metro area.  I’m by no means a weather expert, only an amateur hurricane geek.  But I’ve been trying to research the storm surge risk today.  Here’s a graphic and explanation from Tropical weather expert, Dr. Jeff Masters at the Weather Underground site:

Figure 3. Predicted storm surge for Hurricane Sandy at The Battery on the south shore of Manhattan, New York City, from the experimental Extratropical Storm Surge model, run by NOAA”s Meteorological Development Laboratory. This model used winds from this morning’s 12Z (8 am EDT) run of the GFS model, and predicts that the peak storm surge from Sandy will reach 5.5′ on Monday night October 29, which is 1.4′ higher than Irene’s storm surge. This forecast has the peak surge occurring near high tide, bringing the maximum storm tide–the water level reached as a result of the combined action of the tide and the storm surge–to 10.5′, a foot higher than Irene. At this level, water will very likely pour into the Lower Manhattan subway system, unless efforts to sandbag the entrances are successful. Notice: this is not an official NHC storm surge forecast, and the storm surge may be higher or lower than this, depending upon the strength, track, and timing of Sandy.

Sandy’s storm surge may flood New York City’s subway system, costing billions
Sandy is expected to have tropical storm-force winds that extend out more than 400 miles from the center, which will drive a much larger storm surge than its peak winds would ordinarily suggest. The full moon is on Monday, which means astronomical tides will be about 5% higher than typical, increasing the potential for damaging storm surge flooding.

Here’s the link to the Hurricane Litany Prayer I posted yesterday.

For those in the threatened areas: Please PREPARE TODAY, and please pay close attention to the NHC, your local weather bureau office, and emergency officials.  For all others reading this, please PRAY!

Heavenly Father, we acknowledge that You are sovereign over the wind and waves, the land and the sea.  Lord we cry out for You to intervene to divert this storm and greatly lessen its severe impact.  Have mercy Lord, have mercy.  It especially concerns us that the most populated area of the US is directly threatened in such a way.  Lord, give our government officials, emergency managers, transit managers, emergency responders, and all others preparing for this storm great wisdom and lavish grace, we pray, in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Hurricane Sandy – threat area

October 27, 2012

Here’s a very helpful image from the Weather Channel which someone just posted at a tropical weather discussion board I participate in.  Based on all I’ve read, I do not think this is overkill by the Weather Channel. Even areas far inland are at serious risk from extreme rains (flooding) or snow (1 – 2 feet in WV mountains!)  Hurricane Sandy looks like she will meander / stall a bit once she is inland.

Here’s the link to the Hurricane Litany Prayer I posted yesterday.

For those in the Action Area: Please PREPARE TODAY, and please pay close attention to the NHC, your local weather bureau office, and emergency officials.  For all others reading this, please PRAY!

Hurricane Sandy – the situation is alarming for NJ & NYC Metro area. Please pray!

October 27, 2012

I continue to track Hurricane Sandy very closely from here in W. Africa as I have many friends and some family directly in the storm’s path.  Honestly, this storm has me quite alarmed, as it is getting close to one of the “worst case scenarios” for storm surge in the NY City metro area.

Here’s a possible storm-surge map for NYC that I saw this morning based on the current NHC track for the storm.

I’ll to find a direct link to this site (it was posted by a Charlotte, NC weatherman on Twitter) and will update this post.

Lots of areas on the Jersey Shore are being evacuated, as is Fire Island in New York.  Some evacuations in NYC proper may begin soon.

Here’s an article that outlines why the risk to NYC is so serious.

Here’s the morning briefing from the Mount Holly, NJ bureau of the National Weather Service, which covers most of NJ, the Philly Metro area, Delaware etc.

I’ve posted these, and a number of other links and analyses by respected tropical meteorologists in the comment thread about this storm at Kendall Harmon’s blog.

As I wrote there just a little while ago, please prepare if you are in the projected impact area (primarily between DC and Boston or in the Ohio Valley, or the the NC & WV mountains.)  And everyone else, please be praying!

Lord, please have mercy!  You are the One who spoke and stilled the winds and waves.  We would cry out to you to still or turn this storm.  However if this is something you are allowing for Your purposes, please help all the forecasters and emergency managers and responders.  Give those in the storm’s path wisdom and help them find a place of safety.  Turn our hearts to You in the midst of this peril, Lord, we pray.  In Jesus’ mighty name.  Amen.

Also, don’t forget the Hurricane Litany I posted yesterday.  – Karen

Luke 11:1-4

October 27, 2012

Now it came to pass, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, that one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” (Luke 11:1)
Lord Jesus, teach us to pray!

So he said to them, “When you pray, say: our Father in heaven, (Luke 11:2a)
Holy Spirit, please help us know that we have a Father in heaven who loves us and cares for us.

Hallowed be your name. (Luke 11:2b)
So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, The LORD of hosts.” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth with it, and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity is taken away, And your sin purged.” (Isaiah 6:5-7)
Jesus, we are people of unclean lips, help us by the fire of your Holy Spirit to speak as you want us to.

Your kingdom come. your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. (Luke 11:2c)
Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” (Isaiah 6:8 )
Father, we pray that you will establish your kingdom among us — that we will become kingdom people who will go forth into the harvest fields at your bidding.

Give us day by day our daily bread. (Luke 11:3)
Thank you, Father, for your daily provision for us.

And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. (Luke 11:4a)
Father, we ask for forgiveness of our sins in Jesus’ name. Help us by your Holy Spirit to minister your forgiveness to others.

And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” (Luke 11:4b)
Holy Spirit, please help us daily overcome temptation and all the tricks and traps of the evil one. Thank you.

A word received: Come to me. Pray with me for the lost and the least.

A word received 6/4/2009: Pray for this nation. Pray for wise and godly men and women who will lead my people in my ways. Pray for the courts, that they will do true justice. Pray for the Congress and the legislatures, that they will have a spirit of wisdom and discernment. Pray for the President and the Governors, that their hearts will be turned into my ways.

The ten disciplined bishops

October 27, 2012

Colossians 2:6-10 (ESV)
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.

Father in heaven,
We give You thanks that Christ transcends all dimensions and realms, seen and unseen. We pray that each of the ten bishops found guilty by TEC’s disciplinary apparatus will walk in Jesus, rooted and built up in Him. Christ Jesus is the head of all rule and authority, all principality and power. At the name of Jesus, every principality, power, ruler of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places must bow its knee.
Christ before the bishops, Christ behind them, Christ to their right, Christ to their left, Christ above them, and Christ beneath them. Christ over their time. Christ! Christ! Christ for Mark, Peter, Maurice, John, Paul, William, Bruce, Daniel, Edward, and James. Amen.

40 days for life

October 27, 2012

O God,You are the only lawgiver and judge who has absolute power of life and death. Forgive us for passing judgment on the unborn. They are not our children, but Yours, Lord. Have mercy and forgive us our sins. Amen.
