Luke 18:9-14

November 24, 2012

Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.” (Luke 18:9-10)
Jesus, forgive me for looking down on anyone. I too am a sinner and have no righteousness of my own. Forgive me when I act like a Pharisee and speak to me clearly about it.

“The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men–extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.'” (Luke 18:11-12)
Holy Father, forgive me when I “pray thus with myself” instead of turning to you. I am like other sinful people and you know that even better than I do.

“And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!'” (Luke 18:13)
Holy Spirit, please bring me to the humility of the tax collector.

God, be merciful to me a sinner.

“I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Luke 18:14)
Jesus, I have not justification except what you give me. Lord, “a broken and contrite spirit you will not despise.” Help me daily to have such a spirit. Thank you.

A word received: Look to me in the storms of life.
