I was shocked as I opened my computer this morning and logged in to the internet. My homepage is the BBC world news headlines, and there in very bold font across the top of the page was the news of Pope Benedict’s surprise resignation. In reading the story, I was absolutely deeply moved and convicted by this quote. In announcing the reason for his resignation, Benedict is reported as saying:
“I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering.”
I hope and pray we will all ponder those words as we prepare for Lent. The Lord has been reminding me in recent days that He is opposed to the proud and that he blesses the humble and the broken. Brokenness can push us to draw near to Him, admit our need of Him, cast ourselves wholly on Him.
May the Lord help us all to enter in more fully into a deep life of prayer and fellowship with Christ in His sufferings this Lent.
