Matthew 4:12-17 and 1 Corinthians 1:20-25

Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee. And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned.” (Matthew 4:12-16)
Jesus, we pray for all who sit in the shadow of death that your light will dawn in their lives.

From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17)
Holy Spirit, let the gospel message of repentance the kingdom of heaven be preached throughout this diocese.

Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. (1 Corinthians 1:20-25)
Father, please help us daily embrace the folly of the cross — set us free from the deceptions of worldly wisdom and find the power and wisdom that come through Jesus Christ. Thank you.

A word received: Come to me for strength and refuge.

      Notes from the Front Line

***** Prayer Table Report ST. ANN’S OF AMSTERDAM (Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, 10-11 a.m. in front of our church at 37 Division Street. Cool, cloudy morning but nice. Deacon Alan Hart and his wife, Deacon MaryCarol Hart of St. Andrew’s of Scotia, presiding at His table today.)

a–anointed with Holy Oil.
t–received wooden cross made by Dennis Adams of North Carolina.

a–ETHEL — We prayed for her as she was on her way to St. Mary’s Hospital for testing. (She often can’t remember where she is or how she got there.)

a– REBECCA — Asked for healing for her right knee which she has injured; it is very swollen. She may have to have knee surgery.

t,t — JOHN (prefers his nickname of “POPS”) and his young daughter JULIE — This father and daughter happened by and asked for prayer. Then they said they were interested in seeing the inside of the church and wanted to know more about us. They recently moved here from New York City. (We brought them indoors and Cherie Nethaway, Church Office Manager, gave them an inside tour of our church.)

t–DAVID — Asked for prayer for his friend BLACKPIPE, a Sioux Indian woman to whom he has been ministering. She now equates the Great Spirit, whom she has worshiped all her life, to God the Father … after listening to David, who is a Christian. We prayed that Blackpipe eventually will now come to also know, understand and love Jesus — His beloved son, and also the Holy Spirit.
