Matt. 13:18-23

October 31, 2013

“Therefore hear the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside. (Matthew 13:18-19)
Father, wherever there are stony hearts, work in them with your Holy Spirit and give them hearts of flesh according to your word (Ezekiel 11:19). Help us hear and understand your word.

But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. (Matthew 13:20-21)
Jesus, there are so many stony places in my life, yet you said even the very stones can cry out to honor you (Luke 19:40). Let all such stony places in my life give you praise and honor.

Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. (Matthew 13:22)
Jesus, please help me by your Holy Spirit to cast all my cares on you for you care for me (1 Peter 5:7)

But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.” (Matthew 13:23)
Holy Spirit, please help us by Jesus’ righteousness to be vigorous, sturdy, and fruitful, even to old age (Psalm 92:12-15)

A word received: Trust me.

May God have mercy on Justin Welby. May God’s Holy Spirit infill Justin, body, soul, and spirit, and bless Justin at every point of need. May God dwell with Justin and make His face to shine upon him. May He open Justin’s eyes, ears, and heart to all that God has prepared for him. Apparently, there is dispute over the accuracy of the readings of radioactivity in the ocean coming from Fukushima nuclear reactor. The ocean plume is expected to reach Canada and the northwestern coast of the US in early 2014.
I’m reminded of the prophecy of Ezekiel of a river of life-giving water flowing from the Temple, renewing the Dead Sea, and flowing out to the world. This is like the opposite.
Japan’s most deeply entrenched spirits are the principalities controlling Shintoism, which is a spiritualized form of nationalism. The chief visible figure employed by these dark angels is the emperor. In the popular mind, the emperor was himself a deity. But as a part of the World War II peace process, Emperor Hirohito publicly denied this status and the Japanese government agreed to separate itself officially from any religious institution, including Shintoism.
Emperor Akihito decided to reverse his father’s post World War II position. Japan’s economy has been in serious decline since 1990, the year of Emperor Akihito’s accession to the throne.–JW

O Lord, we cry out,
May the Land of the Rising Sun become the Land of the Risen Son. May revival sweep this nation! Amen.

Psalm 119:49-56

October 30, 2013

Remember the word to your servant, upon which you have caused me to hope. (Psalm 119:49)
Father, day by day your word in Scripture and your living word Jesus cause me to hope. Thank you.

This is my comfort in my affliction, for your word has given me life. (Psalm 119:50)
Jesus, you are the way, the truth, and the life.

The proud have me in great derision, yet I do not turn aside from your law. (Psalm 119:51)
Holy Spirit, keep us on the straight and narrow path — turning neither to the right nor the left.

I remembered your judgments of old, O LORD, and have comforted myself. (Psalm 119:52)
LORD, help me daily share with the next generation the comfort of your deeds and words.

Indignation has taken hold of me because of the wicked, who forsake your law. (Psalm 119:53)
Holy Spirit, the Council of Jersalem was so clear (Acts 15) that we were to abstain from sexual immorality, and yet now the leaders of the Episcopal Church promote it. Show us what to do and to say and do not let our indignation deafen us to your word to us.

Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage. (Psalm 119:54)
Jesus, please help us sing the songs of Zion and praise and thank you.

I remember your name in the night, O LORD, and I keep your law. (Psalm 119:55)
Holy Spirit, please help me live my life illuminated by your word.

This has become mine, because I kept your precepts. (Psalm 119:56)
Thank you, Jesus, for giving me the inheritance of the saints.

A prayer received: Help us to praise you no matter what happens.

A prayer received: Give us ears to hear and hearts to respond to your word.

Romans, Ephesians, and Luke

October 29, 2013

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved. (Ephesians 1:3-6)

For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs–heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. (Romans 8:13-17)

But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ (Luke 10:33-35)
Jesus, please help us show our love for the Father by having compassion on his wounded children. Help us love our Father in heaven with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our strength, with all our mind, and with all our time and resources. Thank you.

A word received: My people wait for me, but I AM waiting for them.

(Monday, Oct. 28, 2013; 9:30-10:30 a.m. in front of our church at 37 Division Street. Cool and breezy, but sunny. Becky Hadley and Deacon Alan Hart presiding at His table today.)

IMPORTANT NOTE: We started a new aspect to the table today. All last winter we gave out free warm hats, socks and gloves to people who needed and wanted them, and we have already begun doing that this late fall. But today we added something new: non-perishable food items. Through the generosity of people in our parish, we plan every Monday now to put out cans of soup, boxes of pasta, boxes of mac and cheese, cans of tuna fish and cans of spaghetti sauce for whoever needs food. Sadly, we have witnessed that there is great hunger in our neighborhood, and St. Ann’s intends to help fight that hunger and get food to people who need it. Today was a great start. We handed out a lot of food to grateful people. We also had some wonderful people decline the offer, saying instead “I am doing OK. Save it and give it to people who need it more than I do, because there are a lot of hungry people in Amsterdam.” Isn’t that wonderful?

MAN ON BICYCLE WHO STOPPED (No name) — He said “I don’t want any prayer or clothes or food, but … God bless you for what you’re doing!”

t — ROB — This man is a nurse who visits a man in his home. He saw our signs for free food and clothing and stopped his car right in the street and got out and asked for items of both food and clothes for a man he takes care of every day.

MIRIAM — This woman asked for prayer for protection and good health and then gratefully took food She wept when we told her to take all she needed.

ETHEL — This women is a regular at the table and spends most of her day delivering food from the soup kitchen across the street to needy friends and relatives. She is in her 80s. She asked for prayers for thanksgiving because she was told (by her nephew) that she can continue to live in his house and does not have to go elsewhere. She has been very worried about that.

DAVID — Asked for prayer for his friend, DAKOTA, a blind woman.

REBECCA — Came to the table for her sister LISA, who is four months pregnant with her third child. The baby is having complications already and doctors aren’t sure she will be able to keep the baby.

PEOPLE IN ACCIDENT — About 20 minutes before we closed the table, there was what looked like a bad accident on Route 30 South by the Verizon building. Someone ran a red light and hit a car coming down the hill. Police got on the scene quickly. We prayed for the lives and health of the people involved.
