Matthew 5 and John 7

February 10, 2014

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. (Matthew 5:13)
Jesus, let the salt and flavor of the good news be evident in our lives.

You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. (Matthew 5:14)
Holy Spirit, let the light of the gospel shine forth from every parish in the diocese.

Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. (Matthew 5:15)
Jesus, let your gospel light shine forth in the families of the diocese.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)
Father, please help me daily make the choice to let your light shine forth in my life so that others will glorify you.

“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. (Matthew 5:17)
Jesus, I pray that you will fulfill in my life what was spoken about in the Torah and the prophets.

For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. (Matthew 5:18 )
Jesus, please have mercy on those who throw out portions of the Scriptures. Bring them to new life in you.

Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:19)
Father, help me, help your people teach and keep your commandments.

For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:20)
Holy Spirit, bring us to that righteousness that comes from know Jesus and being his disciples. Thank you.

On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:37-38 )
Jesus, I come to you, thirsting for more of you. Let your Holy Spirit flow out from me to others as a river of living water. Thank you.

Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?” The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this Man!” (John 7:45-46)
Holy Spirit, thank you for giving these officers hearts to respond to Jesus’ words. Help us respond to his words as well.

Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived? Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him? But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” (John 7:47-49)
Father, protect your little ones and those young in faith from those whose human knowledge is more important to them than knowing Jesus. Thank you.

Flood in Somerset Levels

February 10, 2014

The following was originally posted after Katrina. From the winter 2006 issue of Cowley, the periodical of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist. I changed the prayer from first person to third person.

Lord, God of the Universe, creator and sustainer of all life,
Grant the people of the Somerset Levels the serenity to respond to disaster in bold faith, seeking not certainty, but rather the assurance of your abiding presence. Grant them hope when they spiral into despair and fill their broken hearts with the love with which you surround them. As they rebuild, guide each hammer and nail with a ring of hope; bless each bandage and conversation with the balm of healing, and strengthen each resolve with the blessed assurance that all manner of things shall be well, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
