Mark 16 and Matthew 7

May 30, 2014

Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. (Mark 16:14)
Holy Spirit, rebuke us whenever we slip into hardness of heart and disbelieve the teaching of those who have been touched by Jesus and seen him.

And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. (Mark 16:15)
Also I heart of voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” (Isaiah 6:8 )

So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the signs following. Amen. (Mark 16:19-20)
Jesus, confirm your word and your work in our lives by “signs following”. Thank you.

“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” (Matthew 7:24-27)
Father, we are in the midst of a great storm and much that seemed solid that was not built on the rock is being swept away

Jesus, you are the rock; help us build only on you. Help us by your Holy Spirit to recognize and embrace that which is solid and enduring and to shun that which is merely fashionable and is passing away.

Holy Spirit, revive your people and your church. Come with power upon the Diocesan Convention and show us the way forward. Thank you.

A word received: Pray for my Holy Spirit to refresh you.

A word received: Turn to me.

A word received: I have set you on a rock — my son Jesus — do not be afraid. (Matthew7:24-27)

John 16:33 (ESV)
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

O Lord, may the Christians of Syria wear these words like a mantle of peace.

Various Scriptures Prayed

May 28, 2014

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. (1 Timothy 2:1-2)
Father, I pray that you revive and renew our civic institutions by your Holy Spirit and the men and women in positions of authority over us.

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (1 Timothy 2:3-4)
Bring all those who rule over us to a saving knowledge of what Jesus has done for us and for them.

For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, (1 Timothy 2:5-9)
Jesus, you are the way, the truth, and the life, and the only way to the Father.

So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, And guided them by the skillfulness of his hands. (Psalm 78:72)
      Jesus, shepherd us.
      Holy Spirit, guide us.
      Father, thank you.

Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. (Revelation 5:8 )
Lamb of God, thank you that our prayers come before you as incense.

And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth.” (Revelation 5:9-10)
Jesus, by your blood you have given us the hope of glory. Thank you.

Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain To receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing!” (Revelation 5:11-12)
Holy Spirit, thank you for the joy you give us in being a part of that vast throng that proclaims “strength and honor and glory and blessing!” to Jesus.

And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!” Then the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped Him who lives forever and ever. (Revelation 5:13-14)
Father, you have won the final victory over sin and death through your son Jesus. Thank you. Help us daily come into his presence and worship him. Amen!

Our God is the God of salvation; And to GOD the Lord belong escapes from death. (Psalm 68:20)
Father, thank you for the hope of salvation and escape from death.

A word received: Pray for my people to return to me.

Syrian Christians

May 27, 2014

Syria is known for its hymn writers–St. Ephraem the Syrian (c. 373), Cyrillonas (the end of fourth century), Balaeus (c. 430), and James of Sarugh (d. 521).

Psalm 119:54 (ESV)
Your statutes have been my songs
in the house of my sojourning.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Many Syrian Christians are internally displaced or refugees in an alien land. Stir them, we pray, wherever they are, to compose and sing songs of scripture.

The Syrian Christians are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses. May the hymn writers in that cloud step forward and pray for them earnestly.

Let the Syrian Christians lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely. Let them run with endurance the race that is set before them, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of their faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Guide their hands and fingers in the fashioning and playing of musical instruments. Let their voices be flutes of the Holy Spirit. O, songs of love rising before the throne of God from the Christians of Syria–that is our hearts’ desire. Amen.
Hebrews 12:1-2

Matthew 13:8-9

May 26, 2014

But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. (Matthew 13:8 )
Jesus, we pray that the Diocesan Convention will be good ground which will yield up an enormous crop of men, women, youths, and children who have fallen deeper in love with you.

He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” (Matthew 13:9)
Holy Spirit, open our ears and our hearts to your work so that we are good ground, prepared to receive and nourish the word of the kingdom.

Remember the many who have paid the final price:
