Matthew 13:1-9

October 25, 2011

On the same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea. And great multitudes were gathered together to him, so that he got into a boat and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. Then he spoke many things to them in parables, saying: “Behold, a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them. Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them. But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” (Matthew 13:1-9)
Lord Jesus, please give us ears to hear you.

Father, give us hearts of flesh in place of our hearts of stone so that the seed of your word can take root there and flourish.

Holy Spirit, move among us and call us out into the harvest fields.

Holy Trinity, one God, some of us are called to sow seeds, some to weed, water, and nourish, and some to harvest; help each of us do the work you have called us to do. Thank you.

A word received: Don’t be afraid. I AM walking beside you.

Texas–Francis Sayre

October 25, 2011

The Very Rev. Francis B. Sayre Jr. (1915 — 2008) was Dean of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. for 27 years.

Republic within a republic, may the Lord endow thy strength with freedom doubly bold: Hallow the proud star of thy destiny; cherish the light of each man’s liberty; until the Texas plain be bright with the galaxy of God’s blessing. Then by heaven’s high design, may her sons dare to choose their way, true to the glory that ever summons them to life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
