The Private Prayers of a Priest

June 1, 2008

A wonderful resource from the diocese of Saskatchewan, prepared by Archdeacon Michael Averyt. They are preparatory prayers for vesting and celebrating the Eucharist.

Yukon

June 1, 2008

There was a hung bishop election in the diocese of the Yukon. The Most Rev Terrence O. Buckle, Archbishop of Yukon, Metropolitan of the Ecclesiastical Province of BC & Yukon, announced this morning that he has decided to remain in office.

Dear Lord,
We pray that Archbishop Buckle will hear Your Spirit and follow where it leads, teach the atonement, preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and baptize new believers. Amen.
Acts 8:26-40

House of Bishops

June 1, 2008

I found this version at Joyful Heart Renewal Ministries. Adapted for the HoB.

I bind to Episcopal House of Bishops today
The strong virtue of the Invocation of the Trinity:
I believe the Trinity in Unity
The Creator of the Universe
I bind to these bishops today
The virtue of the Incarnation of Christ with His Baptism,
The virtue of His crucifixion with His burial,
The virtue of His Resurrection with His Ascension,
The virtue of His coming on the Judgement Day.

I bind to these bishops today
The virtue of the love of seraphim,
In the obedience of angels,
In the hope of resurrection unto reward,
In prayers of Patriarchs,
In predictions of Prophets,
In preaching of Apostles,
In faith of Confessors,
In purity of holy Virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.

I bind to the Episcopal House of Bishops today
The power of Heaven,
The light of the sun,
The brightness of the moon,
The splendour of fire,
The flashing of lightning,
The swiftness of wind,
The depth of sea,
The stability of earth,
The compactness of rocks.
I bind to these bishops today
God’s Power to guide them,
God’s Might to uphold them,
God’s Wisdom to teach them,
God’s Eye to watch over them,
God’s Ear to hear them,
God’s Word to give them speech,
God’s Hand to guide them,
God’s Way to lie before them,
God’s Shield to shelter them,
God’s Host to secure them,
Against the snares of demons,
Against the seductions of vices,
Against the lusts of nature,
Against everyone who meditates injury to them,
Whether far or near,
Whether few or with many.

I invoke today all these virtues
Against every hostile merciless power
Which may assail their bodies and souls,
Against the incantations of false prophets,
Against the black laws of heathenism,
Against the false laws of heresy,
Against the deceits of idolatry,
Against the spells of women, and smiths, and druids,
Against every knowledge that binds the soul of mankind.

Christ, protect them today
Against every poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against death-wound,
That they may receive abundant reward.

Christ with them, Christ before them,
Christ behind them, Christ within them,
Christ beneath them, Christ above them,
Christ at their right, Christ at their left,
Christ in the fort, [i.e., at home]
Christ in the chariot seat, [i.e., travelling by land]
Christ in the poop. [i.e., travelling by water]

Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of them,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks to them,
Christ in every eye that sees them,
Christ in every ear that hears them.

I bind to the Episcopal House of Bishops today
The strong virtue of an invocation of the Trinity,
I believe the Trinity in the Unity
The Creator of the Universe.

Luke 11:1-4

June 1, 2008

Now it came to pass, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, that one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” (Luke 11:1)
Jesus, please teach us to pray as you taught your first disciples. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us and give us a hunger to pray.

So he said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven,” (Luke 11:2a)
Jesus, thank you for helping us know your father as our father.

“Hallowed be your name.” (Luke 11:2b)
Father, please help us to keep your name holy.

“Your kingdom come.” (Luke 11:2c)
Father, we desire your sovereignty in this nation, this state and community, and throughout the Episcopal Church.

“Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” (Luke 11:2d)
We desire for your will to be done, Father, throughout this diocese and especially at the Diocesan Convention.

“Give us day by day our daily bread.” (Luke 11:3)
Father, because we cannot live by bread alone, please also give us this day’s word.

“And forgive us our sins,” (Luke 11:4a)
Father, please help us receive and accept your forgiveness.

“For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.” (Luke 11:4b)
Jesus, please us all keep short accounts with you: help us forgive others their offenses and receive forgiveness for our offenses as soon as they are committed.

“And do not lead us into temptation,” (Luke 11:4c)
Father, protect us from hard testing unless you desire that for us and our maturity.

“But deliver us from the evil one.” (Luke 11:4d)
Holy Spirit, please set all who are going to the Diocesan Convention free from the tricks and snares of the evil one.

A word received: Cast your cares on me.

Father, let the fresh wind of your Holy Spirit blow through the Camp of the Woods and drive from it all black flies, mosquitoes, and bears during the Diocesan Convention. Thank you.
