Matthew 18:1-9

June 18, 2008

At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” (Matthew 18:1)
Jesus, please help us honor those who are honored in your sight.

Then Jesus called a little child to him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:2-3)
Holy Spirit, bring us to conversion and help us all know the love of the Father.

“Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:4)
Father, help us humble ourselves before you.

“Whoever receives one little child like this in my name receives me.” (Matthew 18:5)
Jesus, please bless the Sunday Schools and youth ministries in the parishes of this diocese and at Beaver Cross (the Spiritual Life Center). Help us receive and nurture every child you send us.

“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.” (Matthew 18:6)
Jesus, we cry out to you for all those children who are in harm’s way from predators or who are in harm’s way from false teaching about their sexuality. Please preserve and rescue them.

“Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!” (Matthew 18:7)
Holy Spirit, even now bring the offenders to true repentance.

“If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire.” (Matthew 18:8-9)
Father, please help us let go of everything that causes us to sin.
