Galatians 5:16-26

June 12, 2008

I say then: walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. (Galatians 5:16)
Jesus, please guide the preaching and teaching that goes on in this diocese so that we will all learn how to walk in your Spirit and cease fulfilling the lust of the flesh.

For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. (Galatians 5:17)
Father, your kingdom is our hope and our goal, yet we so often stumble over the lust of the flesh; please guide us in our choices so that we walk in your Spirit.

But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. (Galatians 5:18 )
Holy Spirit, please lead us day by day and help us follow where you lead.

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21)
LORD, these are all daily fare on the TV. Help us discipline our eyes and our minds to keep our attention on you. The cost of such self indulgence is horrendous — eternal separation from you. Bring us to repentance and new life in you throughout this diocese.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)
Jesus, please bring us more and more into the life of your Spirit; help us with patience nurture the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.

And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. (Galatians 5:24)
Holy Spirit, please help me crucify my flesh with its passions and desires.

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. (Galatians 5:25)
Father, help me continue on this journey toward your kingdom.

Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. (Galatians 5:26)
Father, we have nothing to boast of except the cross of your son Jesus; help each of us rejoice in the gifts you have given us. Thank you.

They said to him, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” (John 1:38-39)
