Romans 1:16-25

June 17, 2008

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. (Romans 1:16)
Jesus, we pray for all those in your church who are ashamed of the gospel and offended by your cross; have mercy on them and bring them to a saving knowledge of you.

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” (Romans 1:17)
Holy Spirit, please help us desire your righteousness so that we may live by faith throughout this diocese.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, (Romans 1:18 )
Father, we cry out to you for the leaders and teachers of the Episcopal Church: they have suppressed the truth in unrighteousness; bring them to conversion and protect them and us from the wrath that is to come.

because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. (Romans 1:19)
Father, we pray that when you show the leaders and teachers of the Episcopal Church your ways that they will respond to you.

For since the creation of the world his invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, (Romans 1:20)
LORD, you see through all our excuses and deceptions, bring us all to clarity of sight.

because, although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. (Romans 1:21)
LORD, let the light of the gospel shine forth in our hearts; we have all sinned and fallen short of your glory.

Professing to be wise, they became fools, (Romans 1:22)
Jesus, please protect us from the folly of this age.

and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man–and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. (Romans 1:23)
Holy Spirit, please set us free from the idolatry of worshiping the earth and your creation.

Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, (Romans 1:24)
Jesus, we have all sinned and fallen short of your glory; please set us free from the lust of our hearts and bring us back to you.

who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. (Romans 1:25)
Jesus, your truth has been exchanged for a lie by the leaders and teachers of the Episcopal Church: they have ceased worshiping you and instead worship what you have created; have mercy on us.
